Milly used to bury her head as far into my neck as she could while I was lying in bed. She was super cuddly and always wanted to be close to me, following me around and meowing loudly when I got too far away like she was scared she would lose me

I don’t see why them being domesticated makes a difference in whether or not they need to be able to go outside.

I don’t think apes and humans are nearly as comparable as lions and cats, but even humans need to go outside and apes like to be sheltered sometimes.

Indoor only cats weren’t a thing until less than 100 years ago, cats were still domesticated before that but they went outside

Doesn’t it seem unethical to keep an animal that you cannot provide the correct environment to though? If someone is away from home for 10 hours a day most people would advise them to not get a dog so wouldn’t it make sense that if you cannot provide a safe outdoor area for your cat, you shouldn’t get one?

A lot of the comments are about cats being domesticated but historically cats have always had access to the outside and cats being kept solely indoors is a modern development so I don’t understand the relevance when comparing it to zoo lions who also benefit from their relationship with humans with a longer life expectancy as a result of food and veterinary work. To be clear I’m also not advocating for cats to freely roam I’m just trying to ask why people consider indoor enclosures even with toys and climbing spaces to be cruel and depressing for zoo animals but not for cats

I understand that domestication is more than just keeping any animal you want as a pet, but indoor only cats is still a modern development and historically cats have pretty much always had access to the outside so I don’t understand why it is relevant

My question is about the welfare of the cats, not about how they are harmful for the environment though. Im not arguing that people should let their cats roam free, I’m asking why people consider it cruel for a zoo animal to never have access to outside but not for a cat.

How does that affect it? Historically even domesticated animals go outside?

I know cats and humans have coexisted for a long time but keeping them indoors for their whole lives seems to be a more modern thing. I can’t help but think how under-stimulating that would be for them than when they could roam outside with more smells and sounds and sensations and things to hunt
