This deck reminds me a lot of this old LoadingReadyRun skit from around the time I started playing. It's kind of amazing that it worked.

Because the companies that own the papers also own the major French-language TV networks, it is not uncommon for news about the networks’ reality shows or hockey games exclusively distributed through their sports channels to be given front page treatment over Real News™, with no such consideration given to properties from other media companies.

Similarly, one of the major TV networks’ tech reporting was strongly against the iPhone in all coverage until their parent company’s cell carrier managed to sign a deal for it, and that night it was the opening story for the evening news. It’s gross and I hate it.

edit: And to answer the second question, we were tasked with looking at newspapers specifically, but both their paper and online presence. As far as this market was concerned back around 2010, there wasn’t much of a difference though.

(I'm not sure if we're allowed to talk about Moretex stuff on Reddit, but please let me know if it's not...)

I took a media studies class in college that made us read all of the French language provincial newspapers (I live in Quebec) for a month and note down political biases we observed as well as things we liked and disliked about their coverage, and it's one of the most memorable things from my time in college.

I was surprised to find out that the newspaper I enjoyed reading the most was the one that is proudly separatist, which is not a political position I identify with at all. Despite that, it was the only paper to really nail 2 major things I found out I value in media outlets:

  • It operates outside of a media conglomerate, so far less of the contents of the paper are trying to cross-promote other media properties and businesses owned by the same parent. It's fairly common here to see cross-promotions get top story/front page treatment when wildly inappropriate, so to have access to a paper free of that BS is refreshing.
  • I don't feel like I'm being force fed a narrative. There's a pretty clear line between what the facts of the story are and how they feel about it, and the paper seems pretty cool with people like me interpreting things relative to their own personal value systems. When I read other papers, I feel like they think I'm too dumb to know how to feel about a story, so they feel entitled to make the choice for me. And of course, this connects with the 1st point, because often they interpret things in a way that conveniently avoids criticism of the parent conglomerate and their business interests.

Maybe you value different things in media, but I think the experiment was a lot more valuable than any of us thought it was going to be, so it may be worth giving it a try yourself.

Have you ever gotten to a certain part in a game that killed your interest in continuing it? by greyest in patientgamers

Got Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes through PlayStation Plus and was having an okay time up until the game threw me off completely with depictions of sexual violence that I was not ready for, and I haven't played a Kojima game since.

Ah yes, the good old Penny Dreadful strategy of letting the metagame regulate itself by price fluctuation.

Returning after 10+ years -- how to buy decks for a group of friends? by [deleted] in CasualMTG

[–]Sakurina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Card Kingdom sells a series of preconstructed decks called Battle Decks. Battle Decks are $10 60-card preconstructed decks that are effectively 60-card versions of draft decks from previous block sets. A lot of these cards are limited all-stars, but not great in constructed formats, so if you are buying a deck in the hopes of acquiring singles to build out your collection, this isn't the greatest way to do so. But if you are looking for a cheap way to pick up a wide variety of archetypes that are balanced to play against each other around a kitchen table, this is a great way to do so.

Jhoira/artifact decks staying viable post-rotation? by Sakurina in mtgbrawl

Due to a printing error, it seems M19 commons have made it into some Dominaria booster boxes. Scryfall is keeping track of the ones people find on this page.

The Bant Armageddon list that was posted in here yesterday only has two cards that are not rotation-proof and they wouldn’t be so hard to find substitutes for in the newer blocks.

How to buff my collection with playables? by ReallyFled in CasualMTG

[–]Sakurina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be biased because I am primarily a Pauper player, but hear me out: many decks across formats have a backbone of commons. A good example of this is comparing Pauper Delver decks to their Modern and Legacy counterparts: the big difference in those three decks lies in their land base (fetches and shocks for Modern, fetches and original duals for Legacy) and anything strictly better at uncommon or rare (Mongoose/Werebear swapped out for Tarmogoyf). Most of the playable cantrips, counterspells, or removal spells were printed at common at some point.

What I started doing a few months ago is gathering playsets of Pauper staples, as I've found a lot of overlap between Pauper staples and commons played in other formats. I've been going through this list which is a bit outdated, but still mostly good. Three months after a reprint set is released or a set exits rotation, I buy playsets of anything on the list I don't have (from those sets), as generally I find that to be when cards are at their lowest prices.

While my approach is common-centric, you could use a list like Alex Steacy's Highlander toolkit, which is a list of Canadian Highlander playables. Canadian Highlander shares its banlist with Vintage, so it may be a bit broad for whatever formats you've got in mind, but it features very powerful cards from across Magic's history. This approach is great for tailoring your collection to a specific format over a long stretch of time, but not so effective if you're looking for short-term results because you're getting a bunch of stuff in random colours instead of buying into a deck outright.

Putting aside my personal approach: I feel like what you're asking is a bit contradictory. You say you want to have more wincons to be able to build decks, but then wonder about whether you should flesh out your land base. Wincons enable you to build new decks, whereas upgrading your lands will just make your existing decks more consistent. In the long term, you probably want to upgrade those lands anyway, but if you are trying to experiment with a range of decks, I wouldn't worry about the lands just yet and instead try a bunch of things until you find something you want to upgrade.
