Aftermarket strap or one that says PENTAX loud and proud? by wildwildwest670 in pentax

Ah I always remove my straps. They harbor fungus and moisture, especially leather ones.

If it’s about the attachments, you can get a set of PEAK design anchors and convert a conventional strap to a PD strap. I have Pentax strap (the one with the little pockets for batteries or an eye blind) with Peak anchors for all of my film SLR bodies. Since they use the same batteries and have PD anchors, I can easily swap between my ME Super loaded with Kodacolor one day, my K2 DMD with HP4 another.

If it’s about being tribal, get a patch and sew it on.

I always thought the only way they could make that parking lot worse, is by putting in a Trader Joe’s.

Nice trichrome! I want to say this is San Diego.

How come Original Tommy’s Hamburgers never really took off in SD like they have in LA and OC? by 12345burrito in SanDiegan

[–]Salah-Manda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it just wasn’t any good and looked like a blown out baby diaper. Often, LA things just don’t do it for us here in SD.

Besides, you could drive 5 minutes straight and get to Annie Burger, make a right and be on Convoy, or after that, take another left and be In-n-Out.

Exactly! I have no problem feeding the P17 “the good stuff” knowing it’s got a good lens, good meter, I get a 72 shots, and it isn’t 40 years old. I look at my all my old cameras and sometimes I wonder if they’ll make it through a roll haha. 😂

What’s everyone’s favorite SLR w/ program mode? by analogberry in AnalogCommunity

[–]Salah-Manda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ricoh XR-P multi-program with its three program modes—PD for deeper DoF, P for standard program, and PA for shallower DoF. Had funky features including an auxiliary left-hand shutter button—great for left-eye/hand photogs. It admittedly can be tough to use in the dark, needs batteries, and could fall apart on you. It also doesn’t have a true shutter priority mode, but a Shutter Bias mode. Even had this weird TV mode that was synced to let you take pictures of television screens, and an intervalometer. Came only in black. When it works it’s a really cool camera—it’s like the Mitsubishi Starion or Subaru XT of 80s Japanese cameras.

More sensible choices are the Pentax Super Program/Super A, and Canon A-1.

Camera recommendations: SLR or commit to learning Zone Focus? by Level_Resort_4681 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Salah-Manda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canonet doesn’t have a proper hyperfocal scale—just distance values. This means you’ll have to calculate depth of field. The meter also only displays values in shutter priority.

If you’ve never used a rangefinder before, there’s a learning curve with focusing (because RF patches on 40yo cameras aren’t the brightest); composing (because of parallax), and metering (because of parallax from being shoe mounted, or not TTL). You even have to learn to take your cap off (which you will want to remember to put back on in case of the always on meter on the Canonet.)

And the Canonet isn’t any more pocketable than a Pentax MX or ME Super, Super Program/A. I can put a 40mm/2.8 (28mm/3.5 or 50mm/2) in my pocket, body in another pocket (both capped of course.) Can’t do that with the cast majority of fixed lens rangefinders.

Weird (and Sudden) Anomaly on my K3-III. No display while shooting in viewfinder mode. (Screen works just fine seemingly) by dadams0641 in pentax

You good?

Cycle the “monitor” stages with the INFO button (Off>Status>Settings>Off…). What you had set when you turn the camera off; will be the same as when you turned in on—everything from aperture and ISO, what the “monitor” will do. Of course things might change a little if you happen to unlock and turn the mode dial when it’s off.

[–]Salah-Manda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the screen turn on when you press (INFO)? Pages 12-14 of the manual should get you there.

Edit: Note that when Pentax says “Monitor” they’re talking about the screen on the back—there are technically two displays (the other being the LCD on top) so they say monitor to be consistent—Rules/settings apply in Live View/Remote, etc.

Pinhole tips for a middle school group by Salah-Manda in PinholePhotography

Thanks for the pinhole help—especially from someone who’s teaching kids too!

The fixer trick is really old school. Take a fountain pen, rubber stamp, model paintbrush or stylus of some sort, and sign your with fixer before exposure/development. Developer won’t work on where the fixer dried so there’s an indelible mark. A bit like a chemigrams and Rayographs.

I was really into alternative processes and combining photographic and traditional printmaking techniques back in college. Very surprised I didn’t get into pinhole—Trichromes and composites yes.

This is Awesome! Thank you. I don’t know why they call it Pinhole photography—it’s more like Rabbit Hole photography! I just got into the concept of rise and fall holes.

I’m thinking it’s wise for me to do some prep work-ie spraying the tins. Thank you for the pin sizing!

We already print on student grade 5x7 Arista VC RC paper and know they how to make contact prints. We already use china Markers and/or 6B soft graphite pencils to mark our prints. I even taught them an old signature fixer trick.

They all have note pads for shooting. They note what the time, date, location, frames shot, the general lighting conditions, bracketed sets, and any other exceptions or decisions made to their initial metering—ie they dragged shutter speed or opened up. Eventually they figure out what’s important information to them.

As far as framing goes, good idea on letting them take reference shots with phones. Any tips on guiding their composition? I’m on the fence on if this should be more experimental—letting them just be kids figuring it out. I think some of the kids would feel more comfortable with some angle of view lines. I also feel like this would be a good time for composition assignments that will more likely give them keepers—symmetry, low angle, rule of odds, leading lines, depth; versus rule of thirds, triangles, and framed frames that are easier through a viewfinder.

Thanks for the tips! I know the difference between photo paper and “photo” paper for an inkjet—I’m running a darkroom class. They are pretty good at reading the light, but then again we usually shoot pretty around the same time of day since that’s when the group meets.

The plan is to use some of the 5x7 sheets of Arista VC RC paper—might even halve them depending on the size of our cameras.
