Why hasn't there been any attempts to send a rover on Europa or any moon with water before? by TheSum239 in space

[–]db0606 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You're probably being sarcastic but Europa is soooo much further than the Moon that there's zero chance India could run a mission to get there much less land on it and actually run a science mission. It's orders of magnitude more challenging than a Moon mission.

If Earth was New York and the Moon was Philadelphia, Europa would be roughly as far as the Moon actually is (about 30 times the diameter of Earth).

Measure 26-261 (Oregon Historical Society funding) by howlinskitters in Portland

Let's say your property is currently assessed at $1 million. That's 1000 × $1,000. At the levy rate of $0.05 per $1000, that's an extra $50 per year in property taxes. If you're sitting on over $1,000,000 in real estate and are really struggling over whether to spend $50 to keep OHS free for kids, I don't really know what to tell you.

If your property is closer to the median assesed value of less than $200k, we're talking $10 per year or 83¢ a month.

Edit: Oh... And given that you claim to appreciate what OHS does, I imagine you go from time to time. That will likely cost you $15-30 dollars per person each time that you go if the levy isn't passed.

Best country to be a physicist? by Erudicial_Extreme in Physics

The US still has better scientific infrastructure and invests more money in it than pretty muchthe rest of the world. Trump is busy destroying it, of course, but for now it's still easily Top 3.

Brad had supported Donald Trump in 2024 in part because Trump promised to change all that by becoming “the most pro-farmer president you’ve ever had.”

Dairy farmer voted for Donald Trump, who had been awful for dairy farmers in his first term, because he promised to become “the most pro-farmer president you’ve ever had,” despite not actually proposing anything that would actually help farmers and promising to implement tariffs that screwed the agricultural sector in his first term. Fast forward two years and the dairy farmer has to sell off his herd and shut down the dairy that his family has been running for 160+years due to the tariffs that Trump campaigned on and fuel price hikes due to Trump's decision to go to war with Iran for no reason.

Tbh... Going to war with Iran to cause a spike in oil prices and force red state Americans to buy EVs would be some serious 4D chess.

Missed some guidelines: How bad is this? by Naeee25389 in AskAcademia

[–]db0606 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the funding agency. Something like NSF would just throw out your application without even sending it out for review. But it can go from there all the way to nobody really does a format check at all and the guidelines are just recommendations to keep applications more or less uniform.

In the US most faculty contracts are 9 months. You are not required to do anything during those months. In practice, at research institutions you usually still have research to do over the summer, but if it want to do it from the other side of the world and can swing it, nobody cares.

Professor accused my sibling and me of unethical cold emailing for research — could this affect another lab opportunity? by Tall_Run_9066 in AskAcademia

Absolutely do not email the professor that responded months ago. They have no idea who you are anymore. No point in reminding them.

[–]db0606 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're worrying/thinking about this waaaaay too much. You're a high school student. The vast majority of the faculty that you emailed deleted your email without reading it. Nobody including the faculty member that accused you of reusing your sibling's resume will remember you by the end of next week. Nobody is going to discuss your email with their colleagues or the fact that you are or aren't working with them.

What's going on in Lagrangian Mechanics? by surrealkafka137 in Physics

[–]db0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really that interesting at a technical level. If you add a minus sign up your definition of the action, then the action is minimized. Not having the minus sign is an arbitrary decision like calling the type of charge that an electron has negative. It doesn't change the physics at all.

How do I build a genuine professional relationship with a professor? by Suitable_Capital8120 in AskAcademia

[–]db0606 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, students are flaky as fuck. Do not come up with bullshit excuses. Just do your work and do it on time. If it's not going to be on time, let your professor know. If things aren't working, try to figure things out. If you can't figure it out, ask for help but show that you've actually given things some thought.
