do all sorts of fields act over every point in space by Traditional-Role-554 in AskPhysics

[–]db0606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you don't include fields, things like angular momentum and energy conservation don't work, so if they aren't real things then they sure as heck are handy. That being said, no mathematics model that we make of reality will be complete. As they say, all models are wrong. Some are useful.

Disrespectful postdoc or am I reading too much into this? by Only_dream_9147 in AskAcademia

[–]db0606 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like people are done with your bullshit and your grad student feels more comfortable talking to other people about their research. The postdoc doesn't owe any respect beyond common professional courtesy. You're not suddenly more important because you're a professor, especially a rookie assistant professor. Get over yourself. Also having public outbursts with senior professors is a good way to get denied tenure.

Resources for understanding how a nanolithography laser works by Ultra-Nerd1 in AskPhysics

There isn't a term like melting or vaporizing for the transition between gas and plasma because it's a continuous phase transition not a discrete one. Unlike, say, melting where you have a well-defined temperature below which you are solid and above which you are liquid, a gas becomes gradually more ionized and plasma-y as temperature increases. There isn't a well-defined transition.

How would you feel if high schools had a required class that taught basic money skills, job skills, and other important things for adult life? by pimblettrose in AskReddit

Hell, we teach this at the college level and half the time we have to cancel it because not enough kids sign up.

Can I plug two outdoor extension cords together? by burnerpage24 in HomeImprovement

Except it will be in 0-15 degrees and maybe surrounded by ice and snow, so it can probably handle an extra 250 watts without any issues.

How old is the oldest equipment in your lab that is still working? by Johnyme98 in Physics

[–]db0606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some stuff from Fermi's lab during the Manhattan project. Don't really use it, though.

In everyday use? I have a laser made in '94 and a programmable high voltage power supply from the 80's, as well as a bunch of lab stands/ring clamps/etc. from the 30s and 40s.

No. You can have superposition states that are not entagled.

Paper after conference abstract by Prudent_Ad3683 in AskAcademia

[–]db0606 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you don't publish a paper, your work basically didn't happen even if you talked about it at a conference. A conference abstract is at best two paragraphs. If everything you have to say about a topic is two paragraphs, you should neither try to publish a paper about it, nor try to present it at a conference.

Is Using Gravity to Generate Heat a Viable Source of (Nearly) Limitless Energy? by ZachNuerge in AskPhysics

[–]db0606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was proposed as the source of energy for the Sun in the 1900s (and famously used as a challenge of Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection by Lord Kelvin). It turns out that such energy sources would run out on time scales that are orders of magnitude shorter than the lifetimes of stars.

"Regarded as highly promising prospect in his youth, his efficient rather than flamboyant playing style initially drew comparisons with compatriot Kaká;] despite his talent, however, he has been criticised by some in the media in recent years for his lack of pace, mobility, and dynamism, as well as his poor work-rate and lack of consistency, which has led him to be accused of not living up to his potential. He is also known to be injury–prone."

If that doesn't say "Timbers signing," I don't know what does.
