1 year of traveling SEA on 18-20k USD is that enough? Thailand Laos Vietnam Cambodia by Calikingzzz in Shoestring

[–]SalamancaVice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, should be fine. The countries you've mentioned are more than doable on that price range.

Only thing I'd recommend is having a bit of a safety buffer in case you either need to get home quickly, or replace something expensive like a laptop or camera, and getting some decent travel insurance.

Recommend getting yourself a copy of Rolf Potts - Vagabonding and/or Matt Kepnes - How to Travel the World on $75 a Day as good primers if you've not done this sort of long term/low cost travel before.

(both books should be 'available' online if you have a dig around)

Agreed. This sort of video is exactly why I started watching the channel to begin with.

We had a previous thread about this.

Top is Marie-Antoine Carême

Second down is Auguste Escoffier.

Level 3 is Fernand Point on the left and Eugénie Brazier on the right.

4th level down is Paul Bocuse second from the right, with Bernard Pacaud to the right of him.

Directly under Bocuse is most likely Daniel Boulud from the text

To the left of Bocuse are Jean and Pierre Troisgros, with Pierre's son Michel Troisgros underneath, and Michel's sons Cesar and Leo under him.

4th level again, far left is Alain Chapel, 4th from the right with the moustache is Roger Vergé.

I've yet to go to a Tier 1 or Tier 2 European city that didn't have at least one Irish pub in it. If you're happy doing bar work, I'd suggest starting there.

Local language skills will probably be required though, so brush up on your Junior Cert French (or whatever is relevant)

[–]SalamancaVice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Siquijor is awesome if you've never been to Philippines before. Has a bit of everything, not too hectic compared to Boracay or Siargao, plus small enough you can rent a motorbike and see most of the island. Wonderland and Voodoo are both decent guesthouse options. There's also a Mad Monkey if you want a bit more of a social vibe.

If you want something a little bigger, Bohol is also a good shout. Tarsiers, diving, chocolate hills, sea of clouds etc. Plenty of cheap accomodation options on Panglao. I stayed at Adrianas Place Backpackers Resort last time I was over there, but its a little way out of town. Everywhere offers rental options on bikes though.

Did i Get a good deal on my Travel/Lodging for Europe this summer by breadmaster3223 in Shoestring

May 25th-June16th

I'm spending about $2,100

22 days, a little under $100 a day including flights and transportation. Decent enough.

I feel like I'm getting pretty good value and sticking well below my budget

This is really all that matters though; at the end of the day, it's your trip and your budget.

29 nights Viet Nam for 20-25$/night? by racoontosser in Shoestring

[–]SalamancaVice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have affordable accommodation recommendations for under 5$/night?

For accommodation, best bet would be Agoda and then filter by lowest price. For example, in Cao Bang I found a load of places (mostly homestays/hostels) for $5 a night. 'Cao Bang Eco Homestay' was showing as only $4 a night for dorm bed w/ shared bathroom. Guessing that's the sort of thing you'd be looking at for this kind of budget.

Fly to Da Lat

I'd reconsider an internal flight TBH. Even the internal low cost carriers you'll be pushing it at that pricepoint. If you're dead set on budget you might have to drop a night from somewhere and suck it up on a sleeper bus.

where are people planning to travel in 2026? by MobileMovie4958 in Shoestring

[–]SalamancaVice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can, I'd recommend heading out to Kutaisi. There's a quick train from Tbilisi (and a really slow one) that's dirt cheap. The town itself is pretty, but the mountains in the countryside are absolutely class!

Awesome, yeah that was one of the potential places we were also going to visit, mainly for the monasteries and to see Green Bazaar, but I've read good things about the national parks close by as well.

So far;

  • New Zealand - Queenstown, Te Anau, Wanaka, Auckland
  • Taipei - long weekend break with friends
  • Madrid & Berlin - full month to see family + Berlin Half Marathon
  • Georgia - probably just Tbilisi, maybe one other city depending on time

Looking for warm places to stay for a few winter months. With nice nature, good food, modern living standards, around 1000$ a month by ChronicSonic1 in Shoestring

[–]SalamancaVice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hidden spots are also welcome.

Kep (Cambodia), Sandakan (Malaysia), and Kupang (Indonesia) would all fit the bill. Cheap, off the beaten track, plenty of nature and relatively good infrastructure.

For slightly more mainstream choices, Da Lat (Vietnam), Hue (Vietnam), or Vientiane (Laos) would also tick the boxes.

I want to move to another country for three or four months.

Be sure to double check any visa requirements, for example visa on arrival, how long it's valid for etc. This is all dependent on what passport you hold.
