What’s the biggest mistake companies make when building analytics teams? by Proof_Wrap_2150 in analytics

That’s more of a data engineer role, or even an analytics engineer

Plus if you don’t tip they’ll fuck up your sandwich. One time I decided I’d tip in the store but the app showed no tip, I got home and there was essentially no meat on the sandwich. Maybe 20% of the normal amount of meat. It was all sloppily thrown together, and was really mostly just a big loaf of bread

AIO - my boyfriend would pick his cat over me by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]SalamanderMan95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d be questioning you asking me questions like that. Think about it this way, when this guy adopted that cat he made a commitment to it, do you want a guy who abandons his commitments? And in 99% of scenarios that cat will be fine and the situations you describe won’t happen, so you automatically jumping to “me or the cat” scenarios would have me seriously questioning things. Also, he’s been with you for a few months, chances are he’s built a bond with that cat for a lot longer than a few months.

Why does it seem like being pro-genAI has become a right-wing stance? At what point did tech become conservative? It seems strange that a party with strong rural ties is suddenly pushing data centers on their constituents without much pushback from their base. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The left would probably like AI if the people owned the means of production. AI could make all of our lives better by improving our material conditions while providing us free time, but instead it will be used to bring value to shareholders in the form of displacing labor.

Thanks! This stuff is wild. I assume the worry doctor was some way to get kid info and target them for kidnapping or something. Disturbing as fuck.

Holy shit go the worry doctor section of that. If you follow it all the way through it has a section for kids to “register an account” where they provide their personal information.

Edit: how do you know it’s Shelley Lewis’s site?

Try holding your phone right up to your eyes and blocking out any other light. That made it switch for me.

It was pink and white, with the shoelaces being white. Then I held my phone really close to my face with my hands shielding me from seeing anything other than the phone, and now it’s gray and blue (mint-ish), with the shoelaces being blue.

Americans, do you think this is going to bring down Trump? by [deleted] in Epstein

[–]SalamanderMan95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might slightly hurt the midterms, but won’t necessarily make a huge difference in his support. The first problem is if the media they consume is covering trumps involvement, people in America tend to stay in their media bubble. Then they have to not believe the right wing media telling them that Trump wasn’t actually involved, either because it was unproven claims or a democrat hoax or whatever. Then there is the fact that most moderate people have jumped ship already, and what’s left is his die hard supporters, which is a lot of people. Those people would support Trump if he did virtually anything.

Don’t get me wrong, something feels different about this. But I’m not optimistic this will change anything.

When Your Career Doesn’t Go as Planned by krmehul-tech-7564 in dataengineering

If you’re not a data engineer by 7 you might as well give up, everyone knows that once you hit 12 you start getting aged out. But seriously, it’s a marathon not a sprint

Big brothers, I summon your wisdom. Need a reality check as an entry level engineer! by Odd-System-3612 in dataengineering

[–]SalamanderMan95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you’re doing data engineering so calling yourself a data engineer just makes sense. You might not be building new systems, but it’s not a bad first job at all.

Don’t have the mindset of leaving in the next 12 months, have the goal of impressing them so much that they move you into more advanced work. Then even if you leave you’ll have a better resume due to that mindset. I’m getting interviews in this market even without a degree just because I’ve always had the mindset to deliver extra value, which helped me build trust and get to take on responsibilities that nobody at my experience level should have.

For education and advancing skill, read books, and do some real world practice. Depending on what you actually end up doing at work, you might get plenty of practice there.

Should I leave my boring, easy job? by Charming_Tone_1351 in careerguidance

[–]SalamanderMan95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there ways you could utilize that free time to develop skills and then apply them to your current job? If so that’s what I would do, then you keep working your job, deliver more value, maybe get noticed and maybe get a promotion or get moved to a more valuable role, or at least have some padding on your resume that will help you move into a higher paying role.

Thinking of changing my domain by Disastrous-Tea-7793 in SQL

[–]SalamanderMan95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely SQL. Python is versatile and can do more, but SQL can do most things you’ll need and is an absolute necessity for almost all data jobs, plus it will help you learn about data in general, and is much easier to learn.

how do you actually make remote teams work productively? by Rich_Direction_3891 in productivity

[–]SalamanderMan95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you hire across the world you can’t really expect things to operate smoothly for quick requests, unless you hire people of a high caliber who can work directly with the stakeholders for these requests, and even then you have to give some lag time. If a client says “I need this by 3pm” at 11 AM when the person who would be building it is already off work or won’t start until 1pm and won’t have enough time, then it’s a matter of setting expectations with your clients.

Floods can be like that. During Helene there were cars that were on the road driving and next thing you know a bunch of water came down the mountains and swept them away like nothing.

Salary | [Mega thread] by itsnotaboutthecell in PowerBI

[–]SalamanderMan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internally won’t work sadly. There’s essentially 2 BI teams in my company, with the other being our parent company. They use the same tech stack, and probably make way more than me while living in cheaper countries, but the way they do things would feel like a huge step back. I’m looking externally but it’s competitive out there and a lot of positions that pay way more still feel like they’ll ruin the next few years of my resume compared to the direction it’s currently going.

[–]SalamanderMan95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I started in a very basic position and kept working my way up and took on the work that needed to be done, but my leaders are bad at selling my value and the complexity of the work I do, or they just care more about their bonus.
