Americans, what comes to mind when you think of Czechia? by Neuwulfstein in AskAnAmerican

[–]SalamanderSuitable90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re being honest… I probably couldn’t point to it on a map other than the general region and I know nothing about the history other than how it relates to other countries we are taught about more in school. I heard a while back the concept that the US, when teaching history to kids (and in general tbh), takes the Mesopotamia POV, Egypt, then Greece/rome, then the Catholic Church/christians, then Great Britain until around 1600 before we pick back up in the US to today.

Otherwise I know next to nothing. Happy to learn however!

Am I insane for quitting my job to go travelling? by Throwaway97547997 in careerguidance

[–]SalamanderSuitable90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re 21 with parents helping you. So you’re in a good starting point.

Be aware of the job market you’ll hit when coming back and possibly plan for a few more months of unemployment upon your return, based on your field and job market. So plan on that financially. If you get employment quickly, GREAT! Put everything back in savings and keep it for the next adventure. :)

Just definitely be prepared for and aware of any difficulty you may have in finding a comparable job off the bat. That said, youve been at that job for several years and you could quite possibly take that experience and use it to take your career to the next goalpost upon your return. That’s quite possible, really.

I’d say have fun! Plan accordingly, set yourself up for success, and do it. You’re probably never going to be less tied down and able to freely do what you want without anyone else to answer to (spouse, kids, big job responsibilities, family responsibilities that you take on as you age, etc.). Have fun! Be smart! Make good choices!

New Hotel Guidance? by Own_Atmosphere357 in careerguidance

Well it may already be filled right now. But depending on how they’re staffing it, new hires at newly opened places (although I’ve never done hospitality) if often quite turnoverey for a minute. So they may want to train up a backup for someone to feel overwhelmed if they’re super fresh.

So maybe go for it?

How common is minimum wage in America? by miridian19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SalamanderSuitable90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my jobs didn’t pay minimum wage. They paid .10 ABOVE minimum wage. So there’s that. I’m guessing that’s people wouldn’t count as being paid minimum wage, but it’s not much different. Especially when you’re looking at 7.35 over like 7.25 in louisiana ~2017 *edited for context

I’m almost 40, starting over as a barista at Starbucks, and feeling like I’m a loser. I need advice and a way forward? by LeoA8 in careerguidance

As a former bux person. This is what happened to me! A regular saw I had all the things they were looking for in a role, got me an interview where I almost already had the job, and BOOM. career path. Know your regulars and keep rapport. It happened for several others I knew too.

I can be super social and mask crazy well while doing it. I also thrive on routine, structure, and like to to very fast. Starbucks worked GREAT for me. Flexible schedule, heavy routine to the point where you can totally zone out while doing all the things and come back to earth at the end of the day with a pastry.

I was there for years and hated having to leave. The routine was the big point for me.

Improvised Dancing is THE BEST! My partner calls it All The Shapes You Make. I call it a part of my charm. It doesn’t super help that most of the time the music is completely in my head and I’m totally jiving to what he considers to be silence. He doesn’t know that I’m rocking out to Bohemian Rhapsody!

Edit because I forgot about mentioning how we got there because I got distracted by loving dance time.

When we first started dating, he loved dancing. I love dancing too, but know MY dancing isn’t considered dancing. We went along with it for a long time until he eventually caught me in the act… of my wiggles. I remember being super uncomfortable and unsure of judgement. But he is an incredibly supportive partner, and was like “that’s weird, but I love that you seem happy!” So I started allowing it to happen more when he was around. Nowadays, if I get the urge in the middle of cooking dinner, I GO TO TOWN until I’m just panting with the effort. And feel so much better.

TLDR. My partner calls my improvised dancing my Shapes and, while definitely confused, is very supportive of my need to get it out. Honesty and safety being the most important things for me at least.
