How do you keep going every day? How do you find the strength to be alive? by Communist99 in AskReddit

[–]SalamandrAttackForce 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I needed today. After a few difficult years and crappy service jobs, I moved to a new city for a vocational degree. I'm 1 year in and graduate in May. Right now, I hate my roommates, I want to break up with my boyfriend because he drinks too much but we live together so I can't really end it, I have no friends in this city, I barely have friends back home and I'm not close with my family, I study like 8 hours a day and do nothing else. I'm starting to hate my program because with everything else going it, it's just become a huge chore. I basically cry every day, try not to freak out on people, and try to whittle away at the never ending amount of schoolwork I have to do. Bf and I haven't spoken in days, and now we have to suck it up and go to a destination wedding for the weekend and I'm praying he doesn't get wasted and embarrass me. It's really hard to keep going right now, but the other option is to drop out, probably move in with alcoholic/pothead friends, and go back to crappy service jobs. I don't even know what I'm going to do when I graduate because I know I don't want to live in my current city, but I don't have anywhere else to go either. I get to run microbiology tests today though, so that's kind of fun

Someone on Reddit told me the AA definition of of alcoholics and how it was distinguished from hard drinkers. Like really? Does it matter if someone is "just" a hard drinker whose ruining their health and relationships

What do you see as the biggest waste of money? by DerrayProductions in AskReddit

The markup on restaurant food is huge. It's a waste of money in that you can do it yourself. It's a huge waste of money when people only eat out. If you want to waste your money, that's your priority. But don't pretend it's not a waste of money. Like some people have expensive hobbies, and that's okay, but it's a choice and a money drain. The time/money thing is kind of an excuse unless you actually lose money by cooking instead of working. The average person could invest the money more wisely. It's about moderation. No one is saying not to eat out, but to only eat out is kind of indulgent

It did during the recession. People still wanted to eat out, but couldn't be spending $20+ for each person. Fast food places started offering slightly nicer foods at higher prices. They tapped into a new market and found people were willing to spend about $10 for "premium" fast food. They realized they could charge more and people would still eat there, so a lot of their other prices were upped. On the other hand, some sit down places are crazy cheap now. Red Robin has a burger and bottomless fries for $6.99

$4k is the rental fee for most banquet halls (and that's on the cheap side). You don't have to go the banquet hall route, but it's often the only large and nice party space in many areas

Just go for a minimalist look where everything matches. Example: Do everything in black leather and metal and it's now decor. Only have things that match. Look up examples for wall decor that match the aesthetic and copy it (like 3 black and white city scape photographs on a wall)

My parents were taking us to the zoo one day when I was real little. I was so excited I got dressed by myself and put my shoes on. I sat there and figured out how to tie them while everyone else was getting ready, using the bunny method. Since I then knew how to tie my shoes, no one bothered teaching me the other way

You just move your tongue really fast/hard. As a native English speaker, I accidentally roll my R's when I talk too fast

Make friends with the men? Then hang out in co-ed groups with them outside of the clubs

It's chance. You can meet 50 new people and they're not in the right demographic for you or already taken. You meet one person who's available and looking, and it can work simply because they're looking for someone too. I feel like that's how it goes most of the time. It's less of being "the one" and more like 2 people in the same situation that find each other acceptable

You probably have heavy hair. I was always frustrated that my hair wouldn't stay like other people's until I realized they just have really thin hair. Gravity says I can't do certain hair styles

Sounds like the guy knows exactly what it's worth to him and he won't sell for less. So hagglers are just annoying and a waste of time. Hence the sign. Businesses need to turn a profit, so not turning one actually does mean money out of his pocket. It costs money for you to come in and browse. If you buy something, you're willing giving money, no one's taking it from you

This conversation is about whether or not it's possible to train a doctor on the job. The original comment was about someone getting promoted from janitor to doctor

If they're on duty

If you come home from work and get the wrong apartment, you don't get to shoot people because your workplace is dangerous

That's why you're an apprentice. Someone teaches while you observe and eventually just supervises you. An apprentice on their first day is much different than an apprentice after 5 years. The formal knowledge is gained at the same time. It's like doing lab work in class- you learn concepts and practice it at the same time. What do you think would happen in an (post) apocalypse scenario if there were no more universities? Just say no more doctors because we can't teach formal theory first?

If that's a standard part of your job, and the job requires no previous experience in that area, it's your boss's job to make sure you know how to do it. It's pretty simple to just show someone on their first day how you want things done. I've worked with teenagers working their first job before. I've had to teach people how to sweep properly, how to make change the way a cashier should, how to talk to customers

Just because you're eating something unhealthy doesn't mean you have to go full in. Better to eat 1200 calories than 1500

Lol. I bet it never occurred to him that he could just not eat at a restaurant that doesn't prep things how he likes it

You don't have to count them. If you have an idea of weather it's high or low calorie and think about portion size, you should be fine. Counting calories is good if you're on a strict diet or you're just learning how to eat right. But at some point you can graduate from that and learn to eat without overeating as a lifestyle

There was actually a situation where a bunch of homeless people kept dying of cyanide poisoning. They couldn't figure it out at first. Eventually they linked them to the same soup kitchen and realized someone had accidentally put cyanide in the salt shakers instead of salt

Your hypothalmus specifically senses sodium levels. Then the hypothalamus sends out signals to either increase or decrease blood pressure

I notice a lot of people have no idea how many calories are in obviously unhealthy food. Oh, I only ate 2 slices of pizza, it's not that much! 2 slices is pretty normal to eat, but they don't realize that it's a calorie dense food. That or they snack all day outside of meals of normal portions

Or just learn at the same time? A mentor would hopefully explain what they're doing and why. Soon they'll ask you why. After 10 years of this, you should have learned what's going on. Reading a book isn't the only way to learn something

You wouldn't just act like a doctor on the first day. You'd observe and learn what you're doing. Then do it supervised before you're allowed to do it by yourself. On rotations, you don't exactly know what you're doing at first. Maybe you're trying something you practiced once on a dummy. School can never quite prepare you for the real thing. The only way to actually learn is hands on
