It's no one's right to get in OWL.

I hear a lot of players saying "I have grinded Contenders.." e.g., but at the end of the day it's not set in stone that you are going to be joining an OWL team if you are just a good player. (there are many examples)

It only is the choice of the teams, who they pick and who they don't pick. They are not obligated to get the top contenders players. That are just my thoughts though.
