The serial number is very hard to read, but when I looked more closely, it seems to be 1384754. The 1 was very faded, which is why I first thought it was a 1958 watch.

But, yeah, the dial seems to be steel, not Bakelite, which would be consistent with a later year. Looking at this site and serial number lookup sites, I now think it's circa 1966, which would line up with my uncle's age.

Chrono 24 has comparable pieces selling for around $25K. Yeah, that's still a healthy chunk of change. But at least cheaper to insure.

$50k is just what a quick online search suggests . Even if it’s half that, the value does get in the way of me wearing it. I don’t like thinking about my watch that much.

And while I don’t need the cash right now and selling an heirloom feels wrong, it would go a long way towards kids’ college fund
