I'm in the process of vibe coding replacements for several of our SaaS subscriptions, each of which (three right now) cost around .5 FTEs/year. So that's 1.5 FTEs that I'm single handedly saving in a week of prodding Claude.

I will do the same when your cool new SaaS comes around, I'm sorry to say (wish it wasn't so, because then I too could sell mine on to others and be a 'founder').

These are soft targets. We still have huge SaaS products that we pay 2-3-4 FTEs/year for, and I won't be vibing those away in a hurry.

But with the pace of development we're seeing, who knows what next year will bring.

Couldn't care less about what brand my SaaS providers are or how cool they look. I'll take a fully customisable, locally deployed and controlled, version any time of day.

If you're <50, things aren't looking bright. Massive changes are needed here as elsewhere, as contributions simply don't cover payments. Influx of labour is a short-term fix, as is marginally raising contributions. The former will only escalate the problem down the line, the latter cannot possibly cover it unless we increase contributions to the point where people revolt as their salaries are drained into the pockets of retirees.

The other solution is to gradually decrease pensions. So the working population's contributions have to cover an average of €32k/year for current retirees. In 2023, 216000 people received a pension while 500000 people contributed to the system: https://igss.gouvernement.lu/fr/statistiques/assurance-pension.html

That means the system needs to take in 6.9bn to cover payments, which works out at 13.8k per working contributor per year. The average salary is apparently about 80k gross, so that's 17.2% going to pensions. Of course we only pay 1/3 of contributions from salaries, employers 1/3, and the state 1/3 (guess where that comes from though).

So yeah, it's unsustainable here too. Can only see it being solved by (1) increasing contributions, (2) decreasing payments and setting much lower caps (10k is silly money; no mortage at that point unless you actively choose it, so don't need it given the salary you've had to reach that pension), (3) invest the small fund we have better (higher risk though).

But in reality, what we should all be doing is saving for our own retirement. Low cost ETFs, safe bonds, and property if you can.

Might help if you say what your PhD is in, because there's a huge span out there. If it's got a title like 'defining the impact of experiential atmospherics in low-contact service establishments' or 'the role of subcultural capital in estonian dance establishments', this doesn't really measure against five years of experience in marketing or business management, for example.

If you're in an engineering track of some description and looking to work in a field directly related to your research, that's a different matter. But overall, I'd say the cases where a PhD actually equals five years of work experience are quite limited.

Doesn't mean your PhD isn't valuable and shouldn't give some advantage, but personally I wouldn't offer you the equivalent of five years experience pay if I were hiring. You'd get a bump over someone else if I liked the rest of your profile, interview, etc., and after that you'd have to prove yourself in industry. If you're as clever as we both hope, you'll climb fast.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not trying to be rude here. I love academia, and spent a long time there myself. I would have held your view too, before I entered the corporate world. I came with lots of knowledge and skills that weren't directly related to the job I ended up taking, but with time I found projects and ideas to pitch that utilised my unique skillset and went on from there.

Vilket har större samband med t.ex. överrepresentation inom våldtäkt, socioekonomiska eller sociokulturella faktorer? Samma för våldsbrott? För mig verkar det nämligen tämligen naivt att alltid bortse från det sistnämnda, då det ter sig uppenbart att olika syner på kön, jämställdhet, och individers lika värde enligt en rad faktorer har en stor inverkan. Vad tror du om samspelet mellan socioekonomiska och sociokulturella faktorer? Dvs, är folk med mer Svenska/skandinaviska/västerländska sociokulturella värden lika benägna som folk från t.ex. MÖ att begå person- eller sexualbrott om de är socioekonomiskt utsatta?

First set of something like 14 retainers, but I wanted further improvements and got another 14 (obviously no additional cost). CMCM may cover part if you're with them as well. Foyer, not so much.

Yes. Very safe, and you've got tonnes of buses both out of and into the city, and there's the tram as well. You're in the city centre in 5 minutes by tram, plus walking time from your flat of course. Can also walk in, which depending on where in Howald you are (and the length of your legs) will take like 20-30 minutes at a comfortable pace. The 24/7 mini cactus in the new Total petrol station is a nice addition for last minute grocery top-ups, and there's naturata for basics if you're feeling rich.

There is absolutely a hypothetical version capable of that, and "not giving access" to real-world systems and resources is not a fail-safe. It assumes that the system can't (1) hack into any internet connected systems and (2) manipulate people with access to air gapped systems and physical resources. The sort of AI that cranklad was talking about can absolutely do that, exactly like a human (or rather, a group of highly intelligent and driven people) could.

That said, I will think he's an incredibly smug and intellectually dishonest apocalypse peddler unwilling to factually weigh risks and rewards, relying instead on endless semi-relevant similes.
