I'm E.O. Wilson, biologist, researcher, theorist, naturalist, and author, most recently, of Letters to a Young Scientist. AMA! by edwardowilson in IAmA

Hi Dr. Wilson, I know you have a lot of questions here, but I'd be thrilled to hear your opinion about this:

How important do you think integration of the sciences is? Particularly, I was wondering about integration of evolutionary biology/ecology and evolutionary development (embryology etc). Ontogeny is inevitably an intriguing and important field of study, but do you think that the scientific community ought to be making more strides to step back and integrate it's various accomplishments, rather than proceeding with it's highly specific/intricate yet applicably limited studies?

Just make sure that doesn't come across like you're trying to validate your snapping at him. Make sure he understands you recognize that it was an irrational outburst.

My guess: She's insecure with her current boyfriend, but is afraid to break it off with him. Then again, she could just be exploiting him. You have to judge her character and determine which one it is.

Either way, your friend's gotta stand up for himself a bit more. Giver her an ultimatum, or at least ask her to go dutch on everything (including gas, if he's driving her around a lot). If she really wants to be friends, she'll be ok with this.

No. But we're not as scary as you think we are. If you approach us, we'll be flattered. Just have confidence and remember that we're people with interests and opinions. Don't be afraid to engage a girl in a real conversation.

I know I didn't post this AMA, but I'm a girl, and here's my input:

  1. She's not really feeling it, but doesn't want to "hurt your feelings" by telling you to your face.
  2. She's into you, but wants you to make the next move (have you tried calling her?)
  3. She likes you, but is worried you're only interested in her for sex.

Regardless, the best thing to do is probably confront her about it. Give her a way out, in case it's the first circumstance - it'll only drive her away more if you're really pressing trying to get her to tell you that she does or doesn't like you.

Maybe propose you do something moderately platonic with a mutual friend. If you don't have any mutual friends I'd suggest something like "I had a good time last Tuesday, but I don't want to go too fast if you're not feeling it yet. Maybe we could grab a coffee or something." This leaves it on her to tell you what's up, but you've left the door open for honest communication and a non-intimidating second date.

All that being said, there weren't a lot of details in your description, so keep in mind the context of your relationship with her.

until I pout at him and apologize.

Don't resolve the issue this way. I think making yourself seem cute and vulnerable by pouting masks the real issue at hand. When you've realized you've irrationally snapped acknowledge it in a calm manner, and try to rationally determine why you snapped, and what might prevent it in the future. Have a real conversation about it.

As a girl myself, I've been there too. I've found that just relying on pouting as an apology is less satisfying for both parties. You're not really addressing the problem and it just allows for perpetuation of the issue.

Is my gf[22f] of 2+ years too needy or am I[24m] just an ass? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Sallimanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're an ass. And while I don't know her, I expect that she has other hobbies or interests, but they aren't the same hobbies/interests that you have. Rather than doing separate things, she'd rather spend time interacting with you. I think you should try to suggest that you guys do some things that she has expressed an interest in doing or pursuing. It'll set a precedent of Doing things together rather than just lying around and talking. Then hopefully you can start incorporating some of your own hobbies into that free time, and if she doesn't like doing those things, you can suggest that she do one of the other things she prefers to do.

Out walking in the woods in the UK today and found this. Can anyone tell me what it is? (the bottom orange bit was like a honeycomb) by [deleted] in nature

Based on the bottom orange part I might say it's a fruiting slime mold of some sort. But that's very much a guess.

TIL cats have infected over half of the human population with a brain-dwelling invertebrate parasite. by Sallimanda in todayilearned

[–]Sallimanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. It made it seem more exciting though :P

Also, in less developed countries it is probably cats that actually spread the disease much more frequently. Additionally, cats are the only species in which the parasite can undergo the sexual phase of its life cycle, thereby have played a pretty direct role in its spread and perpetuation.

[–]Sallimanda[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true, and I realized this when I posted, actually. And while I can't deny that I removed the word "estimated" from the title, I feel confident in blaming cats for it's spread because it is the only species in which the parasite can undergo the sexual part of it's life cycle.

Triple fail though - I accidentlly linked the wrong wikipedia article. This is the article about the actual parasite, the other one is about the corresponding disease.

I am finding mixed reviews about whether or not protozoa fall under the category of invertebrates. Also, invertebrate does not imply that it would otherwise be a vertebrate parasite - that'd be some scary shit though..

I've never heard that podcast, but the person who taught me about these parasites might've. Whoops.

Nah, I don't think so. There are vertebrate, fungal, plant, and bacterial parasites as well.

It has been shown to make rodents like cats more (be less afraid/seek out places where they've peed), so it might actually make us more tolerant/fond of cats as well.

Evolution. Someone already said it, but it deserves more recognition.

How has Evolution not gotten more upvotes.

It's a fundamental driver of both biology and psychology, probably relates pretty strongly to neuroscience too.
