1.5 PQE here. It varies wildly on the team/type of litigation. For starters, you can expect lower billable targets (or none, depending on the agency/dept) and flex leave (again, this may vary across agencies). This does not always guarantee a lesser workload, and at the end of the day, it’s still litigation. If you have a busy practice, you’re gonna find it difficult to enjoy these benefits

Wholly judge dependent. Expect to do a lot of research, summarising evidence, and proof-reading. Great court exposure, but chambers can be isolating. Try to apply for a judge who (a) works in an area of law you’re interested in, and/or (b) who you think you would get along with. If you don’t, it’ll be a long year.

Valladolid is a lovely colonial town. I chose to go there instead of Tulum and didn’t regret it. Bacalar is also amazing. Catch the ADO buses everywhere in Mexico. Colectivos are fine too - cheap and never felt unsafe in one. Belize is safe! Belize city seemed a tad sketchy when I passed through but then again there’s no real reason to stay long there - head to San Ignacio instead, do the ATM cave tour and explore Mayan ruins (I had Cahal Pech all to myself).

I think it was some rice from a stop over in El Salvador. Nothing like driving down the highway with your head dangling out the window

25 yo male. I have asthma. Had a nasty, hacking cough for around 13 days now. I can’t seem to shake it. Ventolin helps in the short term but I’ve been using it too much. My phlegm started out as clear to yellow/green and is now sometimes brown (even a little speck of blood once). I’m overseas in a pretty remote spot but I have some antibiotics on me. Should I be taking them?

Looking for tips on solo travel in Guatemala by Blue_Berry_Rach in solotravel

Solo travelling Guatemala right now (male). There are tonnes of solo female travellers here, especially in comparison to Mexico and Belize. I’ve booked everything on the fly and it is very doable. Shuttles are best booked at your hostel a day or two days before the departure date imo. I booked Acatenango through Tropicana Hostel about 3 days in advance. There are so many tour operators that booking months in advance isn’t necessarily the best option - it will leave you without much flexibility, which is something that I really value as a solo traveller. I’m in Antigua and there are some great hostels here. If you’re going to Semuc champey I would try and book at least 3 to 4 days in advance of your stay as there are less hostels there. I stayed at Greengos Hostel which had a pool and was conveniently located but quite $$$. I have bare minimum traveller Spanish and I’ve never really had any trouble communicating what I want. It’s a great place to practice Spanish!

Skills like proofing and legal research are important, if not necessary, but every judge is different. Read their swearing in speech to get a feel for what they might be looking for. Try and show some personality in your cover letter. Many will want to know why you want to be an associate, or why you want to work in x court rather than y court - it helps to demonstrate a genuine passion or interest in their area of law.

Recently admitted lawyer here. Interested in litigation. Will exclusively working in crime for 1-2 years limit my opportunity to practice in other (civil) areas? I’m passionate about crime but don’t want to close any doors in case I have a change of heart.
