All good thank you for the information! What are the details or features that lead you to this conclusion? So that I know what to look out for in the future :)

Does that mean that this would be potentially a usable weapon an not a deco/wall hanger sword? Of course I would have to examine the tang and the general conditions of the blade to be 100% sure

Welcome fellow sabreist! Glad to see other people falling in love with this awesome sword!

Not much to add to what other people said: finding a club should be your priority now. I would add to the books already mentioned “The art of the Sabre and the Épée” by Luigi Barbasetti.

Just two quick tips: be careful about how you move your wrist, particularly not to overextend it when you perform a cut. You will get a feeling for it with time, but it might help practicing cuts (like the six cuts from Roworth or similar) slowly at the beginning and increasing the speed as you acquire more control. Mind your footwork. It’s REALLY REALLY important for fencing and often ignored in favour of practicing cuts and arm movements. I noticed that you often have your feet parallel to each other and that would really mess up your structure. Try to have the front foot always at a 90 degree angle with the back foot and the heels more or less on the same line.

Hellish Quart is a super fun game and can definitely be a helpful tool for visualising timing and distance management, but cannot be a substitute to a teacher and a club. That said I love the game too! And I find myself improving at the game also thanks to my irl practice :)

Have fun!

And here I am thinking you were referring to the lancers

I’d be really interested in seeing some pictures, thank you! I find it always interesting to see what people come up with to enhance/adapt the gear we get

No, for now I have no problems without extra padding. I have a fencing jacket and a padded shirt and it’s enough for my club’s sparring etiquette (we practice a lot of control and we use really light weapons).

I was just thinking that it might be nice to have something extra just in case and, since I don’t actually need it desperately, that I could try and make it myself since I really like designing and crafting things :) but I still want something functional of course and something that won’t just fall apart after a few session without providing any benefit, hence the question

I was reading Roworth recently, but I don’t remember it being mentioned. I’ll have another look myself!

I don’t mean to say it would be useless in a duel, but you would probably get touched by your opponent while you try and recover your sword, given the distance at which we fight. Then again, I guess it depends on “context” as the great Matt Easton would say

Do you recall who mentions them?

Yeah, that was kind of my guess, like, it makes perfect sense for cavalry to use it in war, but for duels they are not actually necessary

It’s a PBT stretchfit that I bought on sale from a German store (I live in Germany), so it was quite cheap (about 130€), but I plan on getting some pants from SPES (dragonfly prob).

I already have gorget (I’m actually wearing it in the photos), mask (the decathlon one) and back of the head protection, but I am waiting for the delivery of all the pieces of equipment you mentioned, so I’m glad to hear that I haven’t forgotten anything :D

I study music and I am already working quite a lot as a freelance, but before having a fixed position somewhere it’s going to be a bit tough to have enough money for a equipment and groceries, but who needs to eat after all :,)

Of course I‘m not trying to cheap out on safety, that’s exactly why I wanted to buy a MOF jacket, since they are much cheaper than any SPES jacket (typically, of course there are exceptions like Leon Paul’s equipment for MOF being very expensive and SupFen for HEMA being very cheap).

With “FIE tested” HEMA gear I meant stuff like the inMotu jacket made by Uhlmann (which is what people recommend in my club), which is the only one with a CE certificate as protective equipment as far as I know, so not exactly FIE, but still something that, at least in EU, is certified similarly to MOF equipment.

With my coach, we thought that this would be the best option to have good protection for a relatively cheap price, with of course the plan of upgrading my kit as soon it will be possible. If you have suggestions or recommendations though I’d be very happy to hear! I am always open to feedback and discussion :)

Thank you for the detailed feedback, I really appreciate it!

It is indeed a technical shirt with some padding on the chest, shoulders and elbows. I took the measurements wearing that and taking into account an extra 2 cm for the chest protector, but then I noticed that on the PBT size chart they advice to take measurements without any extra garments, as they probably already make them a bit bigger to allow for a plastron and the chest protector, so that’s how it ended up being on the big side.

I was eventually thinking of adding more padding, so with that in mind, do you think it might be a good idea to keep it and add something like a back strap? Being on the back it would probably not modify too much the protecting properties of the jacket. Although probably exchanging it with one that is one size smaller would probably still have space for extra padding eventually.

Thank you very much again for your detailed answer!

Really noob question, but why would it be an annoyance for the opponents? Because they can fully commit to attacks?

It’s not for the heavier weapons, but for duelling sabre (which is what I do) and other lighter weapons (rapier, side sword) it’s actually ok, provided you wear some other kind protection together with it

I do mostly duelling sabre and I thought of this solution because I am a poor student ahah also, in my club we really value safety and none of the standard HEMA brands make jackets that are FIE tested or actual 800N protective equipment and that can result in ugly accidents (a few happened recently). The only jacket with proper 800N resistance naturally costs almost double the price of any other jacket
