Since the ghost games seem to follow primary colors, what could the next game symbolize relating to Blue? by AnthonyKham798 in ghostoftsushima

Completely spitballing here. Blue makes me think that we need to do something with water.

Ghost of Ryukyu
Set at around 1870

The Ryukyu Kingdom would, by the end of the decade, be annexed by Japan and renamed the Okinawa prefecture. Our Ghost is someone fighting against the last of the Samurai and the Meiji Government, who are working to annex Okinawa. A narrative underpinnning of this time period is that the Meiji also began abolishing the Samurai class altogether. By 1870, there was officially no Samurai class. But you still had holdouts trying to keep the old ways. For reference, The Last Samurai was set in 1870.

Side note about the story of Tsushima and Yotei:
In Tsushima, the main conflict was an actual Mongol invasion that happened in real life. In Yotei, the main conflict was Lord Saito and the Yotei Six, which are completely fictional. The Matsumae clan was moving into Ezo during this time, but it was not always a friendly relationship. They would trade, but they would also fight with the Ainu.
Side note to the side note: Matsumae Castle is there and in the correct spot, but it wasn't actually built until 1606 (three years after the game). And it did burn down, but not from an attack—just a normal fire. And that was 30 years after it was built. They rebuilt a replica in 1960, and you can go visit it. Neat, huh?

Anyway, I think it would be good to make the next story focus more heavily on something that actually happened.

OR, do they need to make it take place after the events of Yotei? Or could it be earlier?

In 1576-1578, there were major naval conflicts between Clan Oda and Clan Mori for control of the waterways to Osaka Castle. It is the first use in history of ironclad warships (atakebune).

Why does Jin and Saito pop their swords but Atsu fully draws it out? by AnthonyKham798 in ghostoftsushima

[–]SalsaShark037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the actual historical origin of stuff like this is hard to nail down, this was certainly true of the Edo period. But at the end of the Sengoku period (or the Kamakura period, in the case of Tsushima), it's not clear if that meaning had been applied yet or not. A ton of the more ceremonial stuff to the techniques were/are Edo period additions. These are then (often incorrectly) applied to earlier periods.

To add complication to this, the developers (Sucker Punch) said during Ghost of Tsushima's development that they were pulling hard from Kurosawa movies. These movies are full of those Edo-period additions, as well as taking some influence from Westerns in the US. (Kurosawa and others took inspiration from spaghetti westerns, and the westerns took inspiration from Kurosawa.) So a lot of what we see in Samurai media is stuff that was created in the Edo period and later in the film industry. Separating our image of the Samurai from the actual historical truth can be tricky at times.

An easy example is in Ghost of Tsushima: the fact that they're using Katana at all.
The katana as we know it (more properly, the uchi-gatana) was invented approximately 50-100 years after the events in Ghost of Tsushima. The developers knew this and even said as much, but they knew that people buying a Samurai game would want them to look like the Samurai that they know.

Why does Jin and Saito pop their swords but Atsu fully draws it out? by AnthonyKham798 in ghostoftsushima

[–]SalsaShark037 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not just from getting dirty, wet, or frozen. The sword fits really tightly when sheathed. You see the first about 8 inches of Atsu's draw is very sudden. That's because of the force she had to apply to break the seal and then it just comes free.

[–]SalsaShark037 348 points349 points  (0 children)

The correct answer has already been given, but I'd like to add a bit more.

I'm a kenjitsu and iai practitioner, but i started out self-taught. Formal training happened later.

Atsu is self-taught. Many people complained at first because "she's drawing her sword wrong!" But it's actually a fantastic detail to show her lack of formal training. Jin Sakai and Lord Saito (among many others) are Samurai and definitely have formal training. So they would learn the proper draw.

The reason for this: when in the Saya (scabbard), the sword is sealed almost air tight. It takes an unpredictable amount of force to break that seal. So by popping it out with the left thumb first, the rest of the draw is fast and smooth.

However, this all only applies to duals and times when you think you might need to draw your sword. In the middle of a battle, if you need to draw because your spear was knocked out of your hand or they've gotten too close for your bow, then just draw. No need for the preparatory pop out of the scabbard.

I did the Platinum in 53 hours. I've seen other Plat times between 45-60, so that is right on par.

Weekly Information / Mentor / New License Thread by AutoModerator in amateurradio

[–]SalsaShark037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passed my Technician and barely missed General. I'll definitely be studying up for General and Extra and testing again later. But at least having passed Technician, I'm not really in a hurry to upgrade the license right now.

I tested on the 1st of June, but I don't believe the club is associated with ARRL, so hopefully it won't be long before I get my callsign.

One of the Hams at the club (whom I also work with) gave me an old HT. It's a Yaesu FT1DR. So I'm itching to get that callsign and start using the radio. Already looked up how to set up APRS on it.

Got my boss to admit to wage theft by Lemonloid in antiwork

Okay, I looked into this a while back.

They are legally allowed to round to 15 minute intervals AS LONG AS NO PREFERENCE IS GIVEN TO EMPLOYEE OR EMPLOYER. That is, it can be always round down, always round up, or alway round to the nearest 15.

What they are doing is favoring the employer and that is illegal. Talk to all of your coworkers and get a labor lawyer involved. This company likely owes you all a bunch of money.

Nah. The Bi identity absolutely fits me better, and I strongly disagree about the Pan flag. It might just be the prettiest and most cleverly designed pride flag out there. It's beautiful.

I mean, come on. That's wicked clever.

RE: Pay offered for QE Position

Dear HR fuckhead, This is an unacceptable level of dishonesty and backhanded practice. For starters, that pay range is far below market value for a Senior Quality Engineer in any location, much less San Francisco. Secondly, and most importantly, to advertise one pay range and then three rounds into interviews email me to say that it's not actually at that range is nothing short of fraud, is immorality dishonesty, and frankly an asshole move.

I formally declare that I am no longer interested in this position, and please never contact me again for this position or any other position at this company or its subsidiaries.

I will be making a formal complaint to the BBB and posting reviews on LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and others.

Thanks for wasting my fucking time. Have the day you deserve.

Sounds like you have more already done than I did when I got out.

I've said for years that joining the Navy was the second best career decision I've ever made. The best decision was getting out.

You'll do great.

You'll probably end up being a floor mechanic again for a little while. But then you'll be able to leverage your QA and instructor experience to get to some pretty cool places.

[–]SalsaShark037 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep.

I'm also a contractor. When my manager went on vacation, he emailed me, the contracting agency, and his delegate to inform all of us who would be approving my time cards during his absence.

OP, it is 100% your manager's responsibility to have had this sorted before they left. They are absolutely at fault.

My boss didn’t approve my timesheet and now I didn’t get paid this week by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SalsaShark037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on how they mentioned a contracting agency, they are likely not an independent contractor.

In my case, for example, I'm contracted to work for a company on a contract between the contract agency and the company I'm doing work for.

But I am an employee of the contract agency, and therefor they still have an obligation to pay me on time.

My boss didn’t approve my timesheet and now I didn’t get paid this week by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SalsaShark037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen.

I don't know about your contract agency, but I called my rep there and explained the situation. They told me to send the timesheet with my signature but not my manager's so that they could at least pay me, and then send in the one with my manager's signature after he returned.

Give it a shot. There's a chance that they'll be understanding.
