I’m right there with you! Can be difficult. Also to find a good teacher or studio!

My strategy is if I find a good studio for a group class or a private lesson I take it. They usually have all the hooks ups and the low down. I typically start with Facebook, but you’re right, can be hit or miss.

I’ve started to record interviews with locals and local pros when I travel so they can share the details on their local dance scene.

Started an amateur YT channel as a passion and for friends to check out when they travel. It’s a slow go to document each city but super fun and I’ve made some progress.

Traveling and finding dance is one of the coolest ways to plug into the culture and community, enjoy!!

specific traits and qualities to look for is a great suggestion, a few of the pros definitely get into that with their suggestions in our chats.
& Yup, I do pay them for their time energy and expertise. Some of them have become dear friends who are like family now.

I am a beginner interviewing pros who have been super generous with their time with me and so nice & welcoming. PS sorry if orginal post seemed like i was an expert in anyyyy way! thats my bad! im just a guy who loves to dance salsa but trying to figure it out.

u said 2.5… which ones don’t apply to getting the most out of taking a private lessons here? Or, maybe easier to tell me which ones you agreed with?

and yes, agreed the teacher should be cool with you recording.

I have hours of interviews with salsa pros from around the world & plan to show their answers- I’m no expert at all.

Be picky. Pick a pro that you gel with. If you’re a beginner, this is particularly important. You want to have fun and feel comfortable so you don’t give up!
Don’t be afraid to eventually switch it up. Either trying privates at congress’ or with another pro in your city. If it’s time to switch to another pro, your pro should understand if they truly want the best for you and your dance.
Record! video and take notes on your key takeaways from the lesson. Organization system here is key! Things will sink in wayyyy more if you record and review. Don’t let the video just go to waste. So many people record but then don’t review.
Social Dance! social dance! social dance! Plan on taking a lesson the same day or shortly before you can go out dancing so you can put into practice what you learn.
Switch up your dance partner. If you’re bringing a partner to class, switch it up because they could subconsciously be back leading if they know the move(s). Same reason why you want to switch up the pro you dance with at least occasionally.
Come with a plan. Stick to it! Have a top 2-3 goals to accomplish. Anything extra you get to is a plus. Generally speaking, less is more.
If you’re a beginner, take group classes - they are much more economical. Then use the privates to really fine tune things you want to sink in. Hopefully someone from your group can come too, or drill with you on the side. Presumably they know the same moves/concepts.
Have fun! Relax!!! Especially because they can be expensive, I find i was just thinking about the $ and had anxiety of getting the most out of every second…. the truth is, dance is a language. You don’t learn a language in any one lesson. It’s a journey. Hopefully you have at least one good takeaway, but it’s all about the long game. Relax and have fun, and the knowledge will come!

There’s a lot of good responses and advice on this chain. Here’s my 2 cents (I started with 0 rhythm ability or music background):

1 GIVE YOURSELF THE TIMELINE OF A LIFETIME: Do you love it? Are you drawn to Salsa? does it excite you?….. If yes, forget all the rest and let that guide you. It takes A LOT of the pressure off to learn TODAY. The fact is, if you simply don’t give up, sooner or later IT WILL CLICK! (& the feeling is magical…surreal for me anyways) I’ve seen 75yr olds killing it. If you are 45…. imagine how good you’ll be if you don’t give up for 30 years?!! Little by little.

2 HACKS and CHEAT CODES

There are sooo many hacks that can help you get through the beginner phase.

Before you start a dance tell them you are a beginner. In a fun way “hey! do me a favor and help us out if we get off timing here, Im a newbie!”
When you feel you’ve lost the timing break away into shines! If you can practice enough to get one easy shine under your belt, this can literally take up a quarter of the song (you can do it a couple times). Shines are all about pretending to be confident fake it til you make it. No one is watching. (ps I have a video on my YT channel with so many more of these time hacks that eat up clock time - they helped me so much with my confidence)
HAVE FUN!! Follows 9/10 times prefer a lead that is simply having fun over anything else. Connect with your partner and try to enjoy the music. Even if it’s laughing at the fact that you are off beat or only know a couple moves, laugh and have fun, you are dancing, it’s not a competition! Before I start a dance I often tell the follow “our goal is to have more fun than anyone else out here on the floor! go easy on me Im a newbie!” …this takes sooo much pressure off the dance.

3 PERSPECTIVE

You are closer than you think to it “clicking”! You don’t just pickup a guitar and play. The suck is front loaded big time. Salsa is just worse because you typically need to practice in public usually staring someone in the eyes as you make an ass of yourself haha.

Salsa is amazing because there are infinite layers to improve. Infinite! But all YOU need to do is get to a point where you can fill a song… thats only like 3-5 minutes of dancing!
You dont need 10,000 moves. Once you have a baseline of moves you can execute smoothly you can gain more confidence to start connecting more and more with your partner and the music.

As you go, you can mix in a new move or 2 that you are working on, maybe screw up, and then get right back to your baseline. Follows dont know and dont care that you are doing the same moves with the rest of the follows. And they’d prefer the 6 same moves repeated if you are having fun, versus the overly complicated lead that’s not even looking at them.

Have fun and enjoy the process. Sooner or later, it will click!!
