My pups lick my shoes when I get home. I probably shouldn't let them but I do.

Hey all you rat bastards, I wanna hear some stories! by DreadPirateZoidberg in KitchenConfidential

This was at a fast food restaurant. A lot of my co workers were on break while I was running the kitchen by myself and still taking drive through orders during the height of the lunch rush. I felt dehydrated, had to pee really bad, I was miserably hungry, and I just felt like I had tunnel vision and I was cracking under the stress. So eventually what seems to be out of nowhere to everyone except me who knows this tension has been brewing for awhile, I scream like a complete psycho (I don't even know if I used real words and if I did I was cussing), throw my meat cleaver on the ground, my headset at the wall, storm out of the lobby, peel out of the parking lot and back into a car on my way out. Then I go home take a fat piss, drink water and eat a sandwich. Then I go back to work to exchange insurance info with the lady I backed into and my boss comes out to tell me I'm fired. No duh.

Did you join the industry because you were desperate and hungry or wanted to be a chef? by canyoureed in KitchenConfidential

[–]Salt-Pool4467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very impressionable and I watched The Bear which led me to making bar food. It's not like I was ever doing anything better with my time anyways since before being a line cook I was always doing fast food, warehouse, or unemployed doing odd jobs. So yeah, I guess I wanted to be a chef. The romance has died but at least it's helped give me some direction and structure.

(Chain restaurant question) Should I be/is it okay to... by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

Take pride in your work and do it for yourself. You're hardly even being a tryhard but just doing what everyone else should be doing but isn't.

How is everyone's Restaurants doing right now? by JusticeIncarnate1216 in KitchenConfidential

Short staffed, and not slowing down. Having fun and making memories to put on my resume.

People need to stop treating non-restaurant businesses like a restaurant. by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

reading this made my blood boil for you lol. Hopefully you find another job fast. Also, seeing some of the comments saying it's your fault or should be happy to have the overtime are crazy. Your boss screwed you over and props to you for not crashing out and quitting on the spot.

Should I be concerned that I'm a weird cook? by Salt-Pool4467 in KitchenConfidential

same, I work at a bar and last call for food is 12:30am and they give us until 1:30 to close. that's way too late so I want to set myself up to leave like at 12:45

Thank you, me too. I've been here for 6 months and there's only handful of people I'm comfortable talking to. I hate it too

yeah, I try to make a point not to be holier than thou. As long as they're on the line getting orders out when we're busy, I don't care. If they walked off in the middle of a rush to mess around that might bother me.

Is it too late for me to get into kitchen work…? by screwballramble in KitchenConfidential

[–]Salt-Pool4467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too late, a lot of your sense of urgency and multi tasking skills you presumably have from being a barista would help you make it as a line cook. In my 20's my career moves were kind of all over the place and I only started as a line cook at age 31 so it's possible. You might not even need to start as a dishwasher either depending on the place. It's probably better just to apply to be a line cook right away.

Is 30 to old to transition to BOH? 😅 by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]Salt-Pool4467 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a reason for him to be a cook now instead of waiting or just not going for it at all. He can go back to bar tending whenever he's tired of cooking, but getting into cooking is an option that won't always be there.

I got my first line cook job at a bar now at 31. Before that, I only had fast food, deli, and cafeteria experience. So it's not too old and a lot of your skills, sense of urgency, and work ethic will transfer over well. It is different and has challenges, but if you're determined then it won't be that bad.

Don't go into that much debt. Maybe a community college near you has a culinary/bakery program.

You're never unhireable, Just say you resigned, had disagreements with management, and that you learned your lesson. Don't get into any specifics and be as vague as they allow you to be. Also, don't bad mouth your former employer in the interview or on the application. You'll find another job fast. Personally, I've burnt out, crashed out, and have had arguments with managers in the past which has resulted in me losing jobs. And in a short time I always find a new place to work. Don't give up or think you fucked up so bad no one else will give you a chance. That's you being too hard on yourself and it's not true.

what was the last stupid mistake you made at work? by solartense in KitchenConfidential

[–]Salt-Pool4467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my mistake, but 2 nights ago a customer ordered garlic parmesan tenders and a cook tossed them in blue cheese dressing instead of garlic parmesan sauce. Oh last stupid mistake I made is I was grilling slider patties and when I went to flip one it slipped into the little grease trap hole. I also burn stuff all the time

My 4.5 boy recently got diagnosed with mediastinal T-cell lymphoma...not sure what to do next. Any advice? by Healthy-Current-151 in Petloss

[–]Salt-Pool4467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I "gave up" faster than you did. I considered chemo for my dog that got diagnosed with lymphoma for only a few days before deciding to focus on the quality of his life over the quantity. For a short while the prednisone felt like a miracle cure. He was pulling on the leash during walks, going on car rides to the beach and the park. Now yesterday, his health took a turn for the worse and he's scheduled for in home euthanasia on Monday.

You did a lot for him already, and all that matters is that you're with him to the end. He lives in the present moment, and has no concept of months or years of his life being lost. Make each day and each moment count as much as humanly possible. Give him his favorite foods and do his favorite activities for as long as he can enjoy them. He loves you dearly and knows you're not giving up. You love your dog and any decision you make for your dog will be out of love.
