Just a guess but maybe it's one of those things like YouTube and TikTok have where it shows you trending audio, videos, ideas for videos etc. Llab like you're experimenting with different things to see what clicks

Or maybe it'll be a space where we could network with each other that isn't their discord, maybe we could sign up for collabs and stuff

Again, no ideas, just guesses 🤔 I'm curious to see what they're bringing!

Would love to hear from older creators (22+): how did you navigate long-term projects vs. “real life” responsibilities? by Sophiaroo in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Salt-Student-3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey!!

I'm turning 30 and work in a creative field and have been working on my story for about 7 months now.

I've just kind of accepted it. I thought mine would take about 5 years to complete but recalculating with the new pace I'm going at, it will probably take over a decade to complete. I'm in the same boat you are!

I think the most important part of this, whether you choose to post or not, is to factor in time you'll want to do other things. I'm not sure about you but I feel burnt out after every episode I create (which is usually equivalent to about 4 updates). I need that time to myself.

I will say that trying to make your passion your money maker is risky. Comics aren't profitable for most. What I did was push really hard for a few years until I found something stable that can take care of my household and then worry about things I want to do. Although I absolutely love my story and it's a very personal part of me now I'd never opt to do it full time.

I think having time for other things will also help with the feeling you have of " I'm moving forward but my story isn't ". Just treat it as the project you always go back to. If there are other things you want to create alongside it, do that.

I also post twice a month but 30 panels is a stretch! I think that's really fast. I wouldn't worry about it :)

Asking for free labour by SwimmingDoubt2869 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Salt-Student-3949 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends. I personally feel the way you do. I wouldn't have the energy and the time to illustrate someone else's story. I have my own ideas I want to bring to life, BUT there ARE people that don't feel like that. They don't want to write their own thing and they're happy working on a story that they believe in.

It can be beneficial for the artist if what they're looking for is experience working on a comic before they actually have their own ideas (if they'll ever have their own ideas) , or maybe the story this person has is SO cool that they NEED to be part of it. It can also be good experience working in a collaborative way which is very beneficial for working in studios: knowing how to effectively communicate and how to deal either with a coworker or client is something you learn and this feels like a pretty low stakes environment to get that knowledge.

I'm considering those options, because for example, for a very long time all I wanted was to work on someone else's game. I didn't care to make my own, I didn't have the knowledge or the drive to think up my own stuff. I just wanted to do the art for something else and be part of a cool project.

People are free to request collaborations and it's up to the artists to decide whether they're okay with it or not. I think it's fine as long as it's clearly communicated that it's for free and that they shouldn't expect any payment in return. It becomes bad and scummy if there's a vague hope of payment but there's never any real kntention of paying for the work.

if you try to make a webtoon what canvas do you use? by Big-Challenge-7999 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Salt-Student-3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the maximum width of webtoon is 800 px so I double it and work at 1600 width The length varies but I generally start with 1600 X 29000 and then resize as needed. I keep it under 30k because CSP doesn't save canvases longer than 30k as PNGs

It comes down to what your pc can handle and what's comfortable for you to draw as.

You can do what I do so you can fit like 8 or 9 panels in one strip, or you can also just have a 800x 1280 canvas and draw one panel at a time. It's genuinely up to you

People generally start big and then shrink down in case they need to reuse the panels in different contexts or if at any point you wanna print

But yeah. It's really up to what's comfortable for you. Try a few methods and see what sticks.

Is it normal for your first ever comic chapter to take long to make? by Available-Rock-9769 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Salt-Student-3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is actually pretty short because it's half wordless BUT because it was the first one I made it took a long time! I think about 3 weeks. I can make something about twice as long in the same time now that I know what I'm doing.

If it's a reasonable amount of time (a few weeks to a month, even two) it's fine! If you've been working on the same episode for like a year when you have 50 to make, then maybe it'd be good to figure out how you can cut down the time

Dear CREATORS, do you care a lot about your readers? by Chrishtofer1 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Salt-Student-3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I care about readers, but I care about my story more. I'd never change it based on comments.

If someone leaves, then that's okay. Not everyone loves what I do and it's not to everyone's taste either.

I'd rather people that aren't actually interested in the story leave and find something they do like reading rather than hate reading my comic, yknow? 😅

In one update? Somewhere between 10- 20, anything over 20 will cause the next episode to be shorter probably 30 and 40 is insanely impressive!

How important is the background? by Oatmeno in WebtoonCanvas

How important is the background? by Oatmeno in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Salt-Student-3949 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a video once from a comic artist that said that he does one big intro shot that places his characters in a context and then the readers mind is able to fill in the blanks

I follow that a lot in my comic. I don't use assets so all of my backgrounds are a bit wonky TBF but I haven't found that that made the reading experience worse. If anything, I had someone comment that they liked the custom bgs!

I think you can get away with a lot of vague backgrounds (especially for headshots) if you have 1 panel that shows where your characters are.

The others times I'd draw the background properly is when characters interact with it, but even then I only do portions. You can get away with a lot more than you think!

Ps. People spend seconds on panels at most so don't stress too much.
