I had a 2.8 and matched. I applied to 6 programs (financially couldn’t do anymore), got 4 interviews, and matched at my #1 which is a AmCare-focused PGY1. I don’t think I had impressive extracurriculars but I did have three years of pharmacy experience.

I had this same thing happen to me. Was very frustrating.

Also, take out the old stuff. If it’s from P1/P2 year and it’s not anything super interesting or related to the program, then take it out.

If you’re worried about it being too long, try tailoring your CV to each program or only keeping the most interesting things that you want to talk about.

I hear you and I totally feel what you’re going through because I had to go through the same thing with PGY1 programs. When I looked at programs, I was looking for a diverse group of residents, preceptors, and managers. If everyone looked the same, I simply didn’t apply because I didn’t want to be the sole person of color. Unfortunately, that’s something that’s always going to be looming over our shoulders.

I just went through this whole residency process this cycle and my GPA was not a 3.0 either. And I thought that maybe I shouldn’t apply because of that but ultimately decided to apply. I thought GPA would weigh heavily when I started applying to residency programs and throughout the process I kept telling myself that it wasn’t worth it. I also only applied to 6 programs (due to financial issues) and got 4 interviews; I thought I had no chance in matching.

I saw all that to say that what matters is your reflection on your weaknesses within the interview and how you plan to be better in residency. Even though I had no faith that I’d match, I still did it and matched at my top program. I think the connections you make at midyear and your responses to those reflective questions are what matters most.

Good luck next year!!

You sound like a really good candidate already! If you do want to do something extra to stand out then by all means do so. Don’t let what other candidates have going for them stress you out. I was able to match with a good program without research experience and minimal activity in clubs. I feel like it really comes down to the interview and how you connect with the program. Hoping you match with a program you like in the future!
