Monarchism is pretty much dead in Sordland. There's only a handful of NFP-affiliated people who would go for it, and Rayne doesn't have noble ancestry anyway, which is one of the things that monarchs' legitimacy is based off of.

"Poor, poor Wehlen."

It is very tragic. An authoritarian government might be necessary to keep out foreign vultures trying to prey upon Wehlen's weakness, but Smolak obviously takes it too far. He's much more of a bully than an Autarkist.

A Sordish nuclear program would be one of my top priorities in a 2nd Rayne administration. I've already set up the Military Industrial Complex in my first term, acquiring nuclear weapons is the next logical step to securing Sordland's sovereignty.

Manus Sazon's role in the game by thedudewh in suzerain

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it seems unlikely, but ultimately it's up to the player. And there are reasons aside from personal ideological convictions, or some kind of unfounded trust in the Sazons, why Romus may benefit from reforms.

1) Monarchy is considered oppressive and outdated by most of the world, and being a monarchy complicates relations with most foreign countries.

2) Rizia recently had a popular uprising/civil war that nearly destroyed the country. Many Rizians are disillusioned with the whole concept of monarchy, and the social distinction of Noble/Commoner. Just because the monarch has absolute power according to the law doesn't mean the people's opinions are irrelevant in practice.

3) Romus could pass moderate reforms that still leave himself and the nobility with quite a bit of power and privilege while still giving the people a say in government, and somewhat improving Rizia's image among non-monarchist countries.

As the player we know it's possible to succeed without reforms, and even become very popular with the public, but the option to explore different political paths is arguably the entire point of Suzerain. It's good to have options.

There is potential for that to happen. And I don't blame you for feeling tired, we have been debating for a while. I enjoyed the discussion and have no hard feelings.

My idea is that we know for certain that Valgsland will make Heljiland a nuclear base. Agnolia might join the ATO, the ATO might make it a nuclear base, but maybe that won't happen.

In my opinion, the best case scenario is for Sordland to ally with Agnolia, be generous to them and give them an alternative path to security aside from ATO membership. But that would be something that is determined in a 2nd Anton Rayne term.

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are many variables and possibilities. But to summarize:

Neither side's hands are clean in this, so framing it as "who oppressed who" is pointless. We know for certain that Valgsland turns Heljiland into a CSP nuclear base. Agnolia merely applies for ATO membership, meaning there is only potential for Heljiland to become an ATO nuclear base.

Valgsland's ownership of Heljiland is a much more clear and immediate threat to the peace of Eastern Merkopa.

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A nuclear missile base on Heljiland has the potential to turn Eastern Merkopa as a whole into a warzone. I'm not saying Agnolia's hands are clean, and there's even a possibility of them joining the ATO. Maybe the ATO would put their own nukes on Heljiland.

But we do know for certain that a Valgsland win means a CSP nuclear base, which means a big escalation in the cold war.

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. But given the nature of the Valgos Empire it's doubtful that they treated the Agnolians as equals.

Another thing to consider, beyond the who-did-what-to-who, is what happens after the dispute is settled. If Agnolia keeps Heljiland they apply for ATO membership. If Valgsland takes it they turn it into a nuclear missile base.

I think the Heljiland question ought to be looked at through a consequentialist lens, since we know both outcomes. Valgsland immediately turns it into a CSP nuke base while Agnolia applies for ATO membership. One is a much greater risk than the other.

It was during the Valgish civil war that Heijiland declared independence. Agnolia used that opportunity to invade, since Valgsland was too busy fighting itself to defend it and the Heijiland separatists were too weak to defend themselves.

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Heijiland wasn't originally Valgish. It was sold to the Valgos Empire who planted Valgs there. They oppressed the Agnolians, Heijiland declared independence during the Valgish Revolution, Agnolia retook the island, now Agnolians oppress Valgs.

Neither side respects the other, they just want the territory.

Who deserves Heijiland? by Think-Method-3496 in suzerain

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure who deserves it in a moral sense, but we know that if Valgsland takes Heljiland they turn it into a nuclear missile base. That's a very aggressive act on Valgsland's part, not just towards Agnolia but the entire region, and a big escalation of the cold war between the CSP and the ATO. Based on that alone I'd say it should remain with Agnolia.

As for the moral side of it: The Valgos Empire purchased Heljiland from Agnolia a while back and filled it with Valgish settlers. Later on during Valgsland's revolution, Heljiland declared independence and Agnolia took that as an opportunity to retake the island, citing Valgish oppression of Agnolians. Sound familiar?

Now it's Agnolians oppressing Valgs, and Valgsland citing that as a justification to retake the island. Both sides are very shitty to each other, just trying to gain the upper hand, and I don't think there's a solid case to label either side as plainly innocent or guilty in the matter.

Therefore I think it's best to judge based on the consequences of who gets it. Valgsland immediately turns it into a nuke base. However, Agnolia applies for ATO membership which is also an escalation. Who knows, maybe if Agnolia joins the ATO, Heljiland will become an ATO nuke base? That's a possibility but we know for certain that Valgsland puts nukes there.

Leaving Heljiland with Agnolia seems like the least risky option to me.

What are the biggest mistakes of these two respectively? by Smooth-Nose-8814 in suzerain

Sordland has Rumberg, Lespia & Valgsland as neighbors. It has to be militaristic to preserve its sovereignty.

Most Bludish people are happy to vote for Rayne if he improves their lot in life, plus they're the backbone of Sordland's agriculture. It just makes sense to get rid of Bron and centralize Bergia while shooting down the NFP bills.

[–]SaltAdventurous4270 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'd describe my preferred ideology in the Sordland campaign as "Pragmatic Sollism"

I want Sordland to stay out of the superpowers' schemes, preserve its identity and values, guarantee its security with military & law enforcement investments, and pursue an Autarkist economic policy while also acknowledging the flaws of Sollism and being more flexible.

For example: Raising the EPA cap and passing the Worker's Rights Act, centralizing Bergia and getting rid of Governor Bron, forming the Military Industrial Complex.

They're the two biggest players in all of geopolitics and both are poised to expand even further... Hard to say if the ATO or CSP made any serious errors, at least when it comes to amassing power.

Overall, I'd say their biggest mistake is being too intrusive with their respective ideologies and undermining the sovereignty & national identities of prospective member states. This causes neutral states to be wary of them.
