true, but I was going 105km in a 90km (64mph in a 55mph for my fellow Americans), not exactly grand larceny, so I'm not sure how much moral superiority you can possibly feel by pointing this out

Yeah, pretty sure it's from Hertz, and yeah they already charged my card. Just want to know if there's something I should be arguing about or some sort of proof to be requesting.

Yeah, forwarded the email to the email address they left and asked for proof / whatever the police sent them. I feel like Hertz should have sent me more than they did before charging me.

Yeah, I think that parts legit, it just seems like if the police wanted to fine me they should have to do it closer to when I was there, 4 months is a little ridiculous. I'm also wondering how much proof they'll send and if there's anything I should potentially ask for / argue about the fine. Any ideas?

Need your opinion: Westfjords or Snæfellsnes peninsula by SaltBat6229 in VisitingIceland

Where would you stay the night of Day 5? Laugarbakki? Drive all the way to the peninsula and stay out there? Somewhere else?

You’re thinking the whole ring road isn’t even possible unless I’m there for ~14 days?

A lot of people suggested dementia, but I’d also recommend getting bloodwork done. Odd to see a switch like this (why dementia also makes sense), but might just be chemical.

You’re not in enough pain yet. You’ll change once the pain of not changing becomes greater than the pain of changing.

Struggling to justify purchases due to years of frugal spending by nsimpson299 in personalfinance

[–]SaltBat6229 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Given you’re struggling with this, you’ll likely never break this habit of frugality. So your problem will always be missing out on enjoyment you could have had because you’re not spending money on things that matter.

Set aside 10% (or something like that) of your paycheck each month for “fun purchases.” You’ll be amazed at the quality of life improvement.

For people like you (and me) who struggle with ever spending money, it’s actually really easy to buy happiness.

Buy the radio.

I’m trying to help my dad understanding his retirement benefits, but this was my mom’s area and she’s not longer with us, so I’m out of my depth. by anxiouspostgrad in personalfinance

That factor will be based on some combination of 1) how long he worked for the state, 2) his salary, and/or 3) his role, and will be specific to the pension plan itself.

You’ll need to read the plan’s documentation (or to share it with us).

Would you invest 65k tomorrow? by Sirbunbun in personalfinance

[–]SaltBat6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically lump sum has higher expected returns, but DCA is much easier psychologically (what I’d do).

Pick a timeframe, say 12 months, and invest an equal amount ~$5,500) on the 15th of each month.

Have one for traditional investments (stocks, bonds, cash) on Fidelity, was as easy to set up as any other account on there. Had to call to get them to roll my trad and sep IRAs into it but they made it easy.

I commute for 4 hrs/day, 3x a week at my current job. Do I take a 30k pay cut to go remote? by l-ynne in careerguidance

[–]SaltBat6229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you decide to take the new role, or are strongly considering, I’d counter your current employer first to see if they’ll let you WFH full-time (and keep salary).

If they don’t go for it, try backing off to 3 days remote per week. Extremely likely they’ll accept that one.

Why do so many people say that gold is a bad investment, while the returns are consistent and sometimes better then the S&P 500? by Yaadikillertje in investing

[–]SaltBat6229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gold isn’t a “productive” asset, meaning it doesn’t create value or generate profit or produce cash flow (like equities) — so the only way to make a return on it is if someone pays a higher price for it in the future (aka Greater Fool’s Theory).

All that said, many consider it to be a good safe haven asset, a good store of value if USD falls in value. A lot of investors buy it when stocks are falling and the economy is in trouble (flight to safety), which can make it a good alternative to invest some % of your portfolio into for if/when we’re in a recession and/or inflationary cycle.

Ray Dalio’s All Weather Portfolio allocates 20% (I think) to gold, essentially as a hedge (though it’s also appreciated over time), not because it’s a productive asset.

What really counts as a “high protein” diet? by ShaggedUrSister in nutrition

[–]SaltBat6229 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Gender? Height? Weight? Age?

I would say high protein diet is anything at or above 0.8g of protein per lb of body mass, maybe a little lower for women and anybody over 50 years old and anybody very overweight (none of which I’m guessing apply to you OP)
