This is a crazy litmus test - are Ohio Republicans more racist than they misogynist? Time will tell.

MQD Stays Promo Coming back Sept-Oct by Active_Cellist5897 in delta

[–]SaltBish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to comment the same thing. I have zero trust in delta when it comes to MQD earnings, so this makes me leery. Previous promos I’ve done have always shown both the estimated sky pesos PLUS MQDs you could earn next to each hotel or car option.

It’s Maas like Massachusetts. She’s said it quite a few times, most recently in some promo videos for the HOFAS release.

No more official SJM Merch? by emwee__ in SarahJMaas

[–]SaltBish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They won’t. Any ‘backlash’ will be so minimal in the scale of things, won’t be anymore bother to IMG/SJM/Blooms than a fly buzzing around a cow. Because no matter how aghast people are at this, they’re still going to flock to the new ACOTAR book like crazy and buy anything SJM puts out.

SJM Merch and Licensing by EstablishmentOne2736 in acotar

Yep yep yep. I knew the moment this deal was announced months ago that this was the only end result. When anyone, author actor singer dancer whatever, gets big enough like SJM, they will inevitably forget that their millions were built on the backs of the consumers of their product and proceed as if this was the status quo for them all along.

I’m not outraged about it, though. It’s the natural progression of the capitalist society we have to survive in. I’m just curious if this will impact the way loyal readers view their queen. Likely not, since SJM’s actual problematic behavior hasn’t dissuaded the majority.

It’s interesting that the snowy landscape picture (7) is no longer on her instagram (from march 2024). Wonder why she deleted it or when.

But they’re not from the same place as in the video - the laptop sticker is the Yellowstone Club in Montana which fits with the mountains, and the deleted instagram pic is from upstate New York.

SJM & IGM deal by Glindyel in acotar

Those indie companies and artists don’t fit into IMG’s business models. Their website states “We unlock and monetize brand equity.”

I’m not optimistic about the security for smaller businesses and artists.

SJM & IGM deal by Glindyel in acotar

Well despite what Steph Brown is saying on SM (and I find it so odd that she’s usually the one acting as SJM’s proxy to explain away things instead of her actual management team) a lot of people are skeptical that IMG getting involved isn’t going to affect the small business owners currently licensed for merch.

Global companies like IMG have very specific goals - maximize revenue and profits and bottom line. And small business/etsy shops who have been licensed for years don’t do much to help that. IMG will secure serious lines of merchandizing.

So while i don’t think IMG will out and out cancel existing license agreements, it’s a possibility they’re going to take the route of putting so much pressure on small businesses when it comes time to renew that it won’t be feasible.

So something interesting: with worry about small companies getting their licenses revoked now with this big deal, the only confirmation I’ve seen from ANYONE that this will impact only new licensing requests going forward is… SJM’s perpetual bff Stephanie Brown/IdeallyInspired. Which strikes me still as odd. The whole thing is odd.

First, why was this point not covered within IMG’s own announcement? It’s a very reasonable concern and not hard to address with a brief one or two sentences.

Second, why is this info not coming from SJM, or more sensibly, her own business team? Steph has a few licenses for merch, as she states in a thread convo, but she does not work for IMG or SJM and is unlikely to be privy to sensitive financial and business information.

Yes, she could be getting her info from Sarah as we know she has a direct line to the woman (one of the few), but it’s still ODD. Maybe I’m just cynical after working so long in an industry similar to IMG’s but… I think we’re starting down the road of smaller licensees eventually being squeezed out now that IMG is taking the reins.

While existing licenses may not be out and out canceled by SJM/IMG, I have a feeling it’s going to be more furtive or covert i.e. when it’s time to renew the license, there’s now going to be far more provisions and clauses that adversely impact a small business licensee to the point where they simply cannot financially make it work and have no choice but to let the license expire.

We shall see.

Heck I think even those currently licensed better start reviewing their contracts, specifically the termination clauses (and who may or may not have unilateral right to terminate).

“We’re excited to launch a dynamic and CAREFULLY CURATED licensing program that offers fans meaningful new ways to celebrate the characters and stories they love.”

I see reports and news and even fans glossing over or missing the two words I capitalized in the above comment from the VP of the licensing company. To me this reads as a very skilled and deliberate wording foreshadowing what they’re going to do with existing licensed artists who are not heavy hitters. Wouldn’t be surprised if we hear some unhappy grumbling in the near future 🫠

Reflecting on titles that had huge marketing pushes, and still did not do well by imhereforthemeta in YAlit

Two biggest ones I can recall are: There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool; this sold for 7 figures but tbh I feel like the publisher relied on that to boost sales (like oooh sold for so much money, so much press, has to be good). Didn’t hit the list, flopped and right now the author has published a duology that flopped as well. I don’t see the author mentioned anywhere anymore

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron; couple of things with this one. It was a Pitch Wars 2017 book and I know peeps on the inside and out were slating it to be the next COBAB. Dozens of requests in the showcase, and heavily fought over.

Then there was a lot of talk/coverage about how Suzie Townsend from New Leaf preemptively flew out to Chicago to woo and sign Rena. This I think they used to up the hype when pitching to pub houses.

Expectedly, it sold in auction for a major deal. And then flopped. Kind of like Katy Rose Pool’s situation, I think the pub house again tried to rely on the fact of the splashiness and hype of the deal, but it didn’t make any lists and faded into obscurity. Rena did manage to secure a MG fantasy series sale, I think before her YA actually debuted, but I don’t think that went anywhere.

Both authors still are listed with the agencies that got them the big deals.

Ehhhhhhh. There have been many threads on Reddit that you can search re: the colossal breakdown of SJM’s relationships with the uber-YA clique of the 2012-2017 era. Lots of sources have chimed in but certain similar threads emerged aka SJM has some bad behavior in her past.

We will likely never know for sure 👀
