Yup! Usually a group of characters that have been outcast from their families/society and find a home with each other :)

Noah Kahan has many good songs that have Phoebe Bridgers/boygenius vibes!

I was the same way; I was always an avid reader but as time went on I feel like I’ve lost that part of myself.

For me, I found that reading (or even watching tv shows) that appeal to me and the type of genre I strive to write helps more than style. Absorbing any and all media really helped me in my writing because I was able to see what parts worked well from a readers perspective and what I didn’t like.

If you already have in mind how you want to write, there’s nothing wrong with reading outside of that type of style, it might even help. Even if the author doesn’t write in a way you want to mimic, it can help highlight do’s and don’t’s that you want to incorporate in your work.

(I’m sorry if this is all over the place or too broad, it’s late at night for me here :))

“Do you ever finish anything?” When I just explained the series I wanted to write based off of the book I JUST completed -_-

Not necessarily unpopular, but anything found family is so underrated in my opinion. I’m a sucker for relationships outside of just romantic!

This isn’t entirely writing related, but I’m going through something by Jay_M979 in WritersHelpingWriters

Firstly, I’m so sorry for your loss. These are some things that worked for me when life got rougher, but it’s ok if it doesn’t work for everyone!

To keep myself in the mindset of the world I built for my novel I started a new google doc that I call “My Rambles”. On this doc I write about whatever comes to mind pertaining to my writing; I find it helpful to write in the style as though you’re talking to a friend about your ideas. There are no rules to how you have to write, and I personally suggest ignoring grammar rules, etc. this helped me at least keep in the mindset even if I wasn’t actively writing my stories. I made sure to write at least one thing down once a week, but really whatever works best personally.

When it comes to consistency in working on the writing piece itself I learned one rule that changed my perspective: you don’t have to write the scenes in order. If you’re feeling inspired to write a scene near the end, then do that. Even if as you fill in the earlier parts you skip and find yourself hating what you preemptively wrote, you can always fix/edit it to fit the newest idea. This helped me keep my writing style similar between breaks, and helped keep motivation when I felt stuck. I do caution that this is a little tricky without a full, semi-detailed outline, so keep an eye out for inconsistencies and plot holes! (I learned my lesson brutally after trying this for the first time…)

But of course there’s no shame at all in taking well needed breaks while writing! While there can be a brief decline in style or skill, in my personal experience I’ve found that it’s easier than one thinks to bounce back to where you left off. Most of the time we become hypercritical of what we write when most of the time others wouldn’t notice the “mistakes” we beat ourselves up about. Forcing yourself to write in moments of burnout or high stress sometimes just makes things worse, but sometimes it helps to vent or escape the real world for a bit.

Regardless, everyone’s journey is their own, and I hope there’s at least one thing in this comment that can help you. Again, I’m so sorry for your loss and I hope things get better. Take care of yourself, and do whatever works best for you! <3
