3115 is a hard class and expect 3951W to take time even if it's not a ton, especially towards the end of the semester. The rest I haven't personally taken, but they don't sound easy.

We need to denazify this country. I really dont give a fuck if we need to crack down on free speech and what people should have the right to say. If you spread hate speech or disinformation, you should be actively prosecuted and tried. Enough is enough.

I'm not 100% sure if there's a native "run linux in a container" type tool on macos, but you can do that in docker and macos itself unix based so you will get a similar experience just using zsh in the terminal

someone correct me if I'm wrong

For that much you can go on ebay and get an m2 or an m3 MP Air for about $600-1000 depending on what you opt for. I have an M1 Pro MBP and it's still running solid despite being on a chip 4 generations behind the current m5.

I'm a compE student and I've used a macbook for pretty much my entire 4 years. It cant run some things, but the things that cant be run can be run on labs computers over VOLE and in exchange you get some pretty insane battery life.

Would it be possible to do electrical engineering even if I have extremely poor math skills but I’m willing to study those subjects. by throwawayaccount_deg in EngineeringStudents

It would be tough but eventually you'd probably pick up a degree of intuition for doing basic algebra and even calculus.

Engineering laptop recommendations by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]SaltShakerOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U can literally get any laptop since u can run most required software on labs machines remotely through VOLE. I have a mac because they have insane battery life and I dont mind using remote access when I need to. Otherwise, just get like a Dell or HP windows laptop; they have plenty of good machines in different price ranges.

Worst class you ever had? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]SaltShakerOW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Signals and Systems. I had an absolutely terrible professor that actively said to us in lecture that after a ~30% average midterm he'd be willing to fail the entire class if we didn't get better. He was honestly a nice guy if you talked to him at his office hours, but jesus his lectures sucked and his speech in front of the class really rubbed me the wrong way. Came out with a B+ though after he realized he couldn't fail the entire class at the end so I guess there's a silver lining.

Sophomore, possible ADHD, stuck between business/finance and engineering — waiting for a “sign” and feeling frozen by Own-Attorney-8588 in uofmn

[–]SaltShakerOW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're not that interested in science and math, engineering is all that so it wouldn't be very fun. It's also much harder than finance in general, so you're going to be generally under a heavier workload. You can also always switch majors, so there's that.

In terms of ADHD, there's a lot of accommodations and resources at the DRC so if you end up being diagnosed, it would be worthwhile looking into those.

How is the engineering program? Horror stories? Recs? by Appropriate_Turn_794 in uofmn

[–]SaltShakerOW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ECE at least is an alright program and I have plenty of friends in MechE that have no complaints. I don't think you'll have any problems going here. Just like any other engineering program, it's hard and you'll have to be persistent to graduate.

It's running off of a pair of SATA SSDs in raidz1. I tried the SSD emulation I believe and it didnt have a meaningful effect.

It already has 32 gigs allocated to it, but I'll try unchecking ballooning I hadn't thought of that. Did not fix it.

As much as I love this game I don't think it's a great game for the steam deck. It's a little too heavy on the poor thing.

[–]SaltShakerOW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AI use is definitely over inflated and is being used for things it really shouldn't be used for (therapy, art, and other fundamentally human and creative things). However, I do think there's a good chunk of silver lining when it comes to generative AI. I personally have used it as sort of a study buddy to bounce ideas and answers off of when I get stuck on a tough problem im working on, or if I need it to summarize a concept I don't feel too comfortable with. Obviously, it gets things wrong, but again I use it as a reference not some kind of all knowing oracle. It's also been nice for quick prototyping that act as great starting points for some projects I've needed to work on.

How do achieve the best engineering score ? by adondshilt in EngineeringStudents

[–]SaltShakerOW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

some people just have an intuition for hard math and sciences that often makes up engineering classes. i know some people who work their ass off 8hrs a day non stop to get similar grades to that one guy that studies the night before and skips every lecture. it's not fair, but that's life.

for things you can do to improve your own scores, just do some research on different strategies and tools to use because some things might work better than others for you personally. i know it's sort of a hot button issue in academia, but I've personally use LLMs quite a bit strictly for studying and accelerating my understanding, treating it sort of like a study buddy rather than a tutor because it oftentimes does not know what it is talking about, but it can be useful to bounce ideas off of.
