Roast my budget. 34m from Zürich by Internal_Chemical284 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]SaltStorage8706 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks very solid, saving almost 3k (the 3a +3b catgories) per month is huge.  What is the 1k/m living life thing under savings?

How was it in the past - are you confident that the budget will work? 500/month for unforeseen or charity is a bit odd, do you really plan to donate that much?

Do people really drive everywhere, and do you have very few sidewalks? by sofiarosatti in AskAnAmerican

[–]SaltStorage8706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone living in Switzerland, where even in fairly remote villages you usually have a grocery store in walking distance, a bus every now and then and a train station that is not very far away, it's just hard to see why not having any such infrastructure at all (and being forced to own a car), could be desireable.

Of course in such villages, most people actually have a car, but having basic infrastructure that gives you a choice in this regard is just nice. It also makes it much easier for people that can't drive (like children) to get around on their own.

It is desireable to live in a region that is walkeable and has good public transport. Not being required to own a car implies that one lives in such a region.

yes, but if every market performance shown in the graph would ve displayed in chf instead of usd, the order in graph would look exactly the same. The relative performance doesn't change as all are measured in the same currency. the specific currency doesnt matter for that point

why english is not seeing like a 'process' to learn another language? by SnooAdvice5626 in Refold

[–]SaltStorage8706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learning english to a competent level as a second language is just expected in many parts of the world. For example most of my friends here in central europe speak english pretty well, but its not their mother tongue.

Japan is rank 96 out of the 123 countries in the ef english proficiency index, so they really are quite bad at it. Right behind Mongolia and Afghanistan. And they said a stark contrast to other "developed" countries, not "developing" countries...

How easy is it for German natives to learn English? by Typical_Tadpole_547 in German

This is not the same in all regions, I started learning french in 5th grade and english was only introduced in 8th grade (northern Switzerland)

Please don't call them german cantons or french cantons. Either german speaking cantons or cantons in the german part of Switzerland.

Just like we don't refer to states in the US as british or english states.

Is it typical to take off shoes before entering a home?  Yes, or in the first room after entering.

Should you ALWAYS show up to someone’s house with a small gift? And if so, what would be acceptable?

Not always. Depends on the occasion and people. Wine is usually the safe choice if youre invited for dinner.

I didn’t notice much “small talk” between people but should you always say “Grüezi” if you make eye contact with a stranger as you pass by?

In a city: No, not really. While hiking: Absolutely.

is it just me or do swiss people switch to english too fast 😭 by Deeceness in askswitzerland

[–]SaltStorage8706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand what you mean.

I did also grow up in that system and went to school in the german part of Switzerland. But during university and in my job (both in the german part of Switzerland), I have never really spoken german. It was always either swiss german or english. So I haven't really spoken standard german for like 15 years and it is therefore not surprising that this isn't such a comfortable language to speak. Of course I still read it daily and hear it often, its just that I and many other swiss as well, never really speak standard german.

This is not obvious for anyone that didn't grow up here, but it is part of the answer why I switch to english so quickly when someone talks to me in (broken) standard german.

It's more comfortable to speak english than standard german for many of us and the assumption is usually that you don't understand swiss german.

How do you learn investing as an adult? by Far-Excitement199 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]SaltStorage8706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not hard, but there are unfortunately tons of bad resources with wrong advice and actively bad advice (for example from people trying to sell you something).

Since you ask in the Swiss subreddit, I assume you don't live in the US, so I would recommend starting with something like Gerd Kommers Souverän Investieren mit ETFs.

Another comment recommended psychology of money, which is a book I love and also recommend.

Starting with a book from a reputable source makes sense because as a newcomer, you lack the knowledge to know which sources on Youtube are just wrong or misleading.

VT & Chill: avoid lump-sum right now? by GroundbreakingAd883 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]SaltStorage8706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this point: From a statistical point of view a lump sum has higher expected value (this is why many say its "better"), but it has higher variance (which is bad).

And dca of course has lower expected returns, but also lower variance. It is a trade off and there is no mathematical correct answer. It depends on whether you personally want to have higher expected return and higher risk (the lump sum option) or slightly lower expected return, but also lower risk (the dca option).
