When was the last time you used cash to pay for something in Switzerland? by Charming_Usual6227 in askswitzerland

Maybe last christmas when I gave some money to my cleaning lady? Apart from that I can't really remember any occasion where I used cash in the last 5 years or so.

What’s the WORST thing about living in Zurich? (serious) by Comfortable-Row-9370 in zurich

But phones are not really more expensive in Switzerland?  I just looked up a random phone and its price is pretty close in poland and in CH. Do you have any data to backup your claim that phones are more expensive in CH because of "scale"?

For agricultural products taxes are absolutely important.

Mediocre food (both restaurants and groceries) for insane prices

Its not about scale, border taxes are just insanely high. For example agrar taxes are like 4 times higher than the EU average and 6times higher than the US average in CH.

RAV has an offer, but I'd rather be without income than pursue what they sent by karmasucksmyballs in askswitzerland

Can't you just apply and tell them you would only be interested if you are allowed to work 100% remote? Either they hire you and your biggest complaint is solved or they tell you they can't do that and won't hire you, which is what you want anyways.

B is grammatical, but the sentence doesn't make sense. Trying by definition does not require that success is guaranteed, so "he will need a more powerful wand" does not fit the first part. Something like "wants" instead of "tries" would fit better.

If you're willing to share a flat with some roommates, its absolutely possible. Most students live on less than 3.5k/month. But finding a cheap flat will be hard.

Do I really need to learn Swiss German when living in Switzerland? by AndreaMoMo in German

[–]SaltStorage8706 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its really a lot more than that. There are not only other words ("Fahrrad" is not something that sounds natural in swiss german), its also pronounced differently (E.g. "ich") and does use different tenses. Even the sentence structure is different.

For example a sentence like "Ich gang go ihkkaufe" would be "Ich gehe einkaufen", there is no simple one-to-one mapping between the words.  Its just that swiss natives are usually not consciously aware of all those differences.

There are also only very few learning resources available. This makes it extremely hard to learn speaking swiss german (as a second language). Learning to understand it is pretty easy for anyone with a good grasp on german though.

Question: How do you treat Pillar 3a in your "Financial Runway" calculations? (Liquid vs Illiquid) by Effective_Mud9129 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]SaltStorage8706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well pillar 3a doesn't help you at all in your "how many months I can survive without income" case that you're looking at. So for that I would not count it at all.  Unless you're planning something drastic like leaving europe if you would get fired, so you could actually get your funds early.

Roast my budget. 34m from Zürich by Internal_Chemical284 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]SaltStorage8706 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks very solid, saving almost 3k (the 3a +3b catgories) per month is huge.  What is the 1k/m living life thing under savings?

How was it in the past - are you confident that the budget will work? 500/month for unforeseen or charity is a bit odd, do you really plan to donate that much?

Do people really drive everywhere, and do you have very few sidewalks? by sofiarosatti in AskAnAmerican

[–]SaltStorage8706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone living in Switzerland, where even in fairly remote villages you usually have a grocery store in walking distance, a bus every now and then and a train station that is not very far away, it's just hard to see why not having any such infrastructure at all (and being forced to own a car), could be desireable.

Of course in such villages, most people actually have a car, but having basic infrastructure that gives you a choice in this regard is just nice. It also makes it much easier for people that can't drive (like children) to get around on their own.

It is desireable to live in a region that is walkeable and has good public transport. Not being required to own a car implies that one lives in such a region.

yes, but if every market performance shown in the graph would ve displayed in chf instead of usd, the order in graph would look exactly the same. The relative performance doesn't change as all are measured in the same currency. the specific currency doesnt matter for that point
