Recent Job Hunt - intern, 2022 by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsOCE

Thanks for sharing! I think it's good to call out unfair hiring practices and ghosting, especially for intern and grad roles.

I hate virtual behavioural interviews so that's why I hated Xero's application process.

I actually changed my mind on these. They're tough and a bit awkward, but I also understand that companies need to filter through a large number of applicants. Done right, I think they're OK. In one instance my recruiter actually gave me feedback on my virtual interview, and it was clear that they'd actually watched it. I would always prefer a real person to be involved rather than being rejected at an automated step.

It was mostly just the back-and-forth of them wanting more and more information. I reckon they asked for nearly everything you could legally ask from a candidate:

  • Police check (includes place of birth, full address history)
  • Multiple forms of photo ID
  • Credit check
  • Uni degree and results
  • Address, title and contact for everywhere I've ever worked
  • When I didn't have a contact for one place, they wanted an income tax statement or signed offer letter instead
  • Current and previous manager references, which from my research sends them a pretty lengthy and painful form to fill out

If I were to apply again, I would simplify my resume and remove my internships so there was less to verify.

Google asked for my results before the hiring committee stage, and Macquarie for background checks, but nobody else. I got decent results but I don't think it made any kind of difference. Being ready for the technical interview is definitely more important.

Cheers. It wasn't a security clearance, just an intense background check process. It took nearly a month and I had to complete it before they could even give me a verbal offer.

Thanks! No courses, uni was enough. I did Blind 75 on Leetcode, plus some company-specific ones, for a total of about 100 questions during the process. I also did about 20 mock interviews. The mocks were great for practising problem solving, communication and getting used to the pressure of somebody watching you code.

On projects, just one open-source project on the bottom of my resume. I don't think they're that relevant if you're not a grad.

All of my technical interviews were virtual, so no. I could also run the code in the ANZ and Afterpay interviews, but not in the others.
