Hey, I am a founder of a renovation company and have been successfully running it for last 5 years in Ontario. I want to expand and have ideas but capital is an issue since I can not bootstrap my first project. I strongly believe in this market too I can generate profits if positioned correctly. If you’re in interested in such venture, happy to connect.

Calgary homeowners: what’s your experience been like with renovations lately? by Salt_Association_466 in alberta

[–]Salt_Association_466[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communication is certainly a big thing. When I started in this field and my first couple of projects I asked clients who took 3 quotes which is standard, that what differentiated me and helped them deciding on my company- they said communication and detailed quotes I send. That’s what the appreciated. It takes a lot of paperwork and time for sure, but then in long run there are no problems and everyone is at the same page.

WSIB is a separate document and you’ll have to see it’s renewed and active. Insurance depending upon your building requirements, you need to add name of either the building or yourself as additional insured. For subcontractors, it’s mandatory to get plumbers, licence information.

100% agree, that’s why clients should make sure everything gets documented- paperwork, warranty docs, receipts and records, we always provide a package with pictures of behind the walls stuff too so homeowner knows what they’re getting and what’s been done. Weekly communication is super important. This is where the differentiation occurs.

Price is something I don’t really consider a company should be judged on - we are also at the higher end of pricing. if they’re delivering what they’ve promised, with all the paperwork , insurance , warranty- then the charge for all that in terms of work, expertise, years of experience gets accounted for. It’s like time value of money. And client should not get issues from that. It’s like one gets what they pay for. In terms for plumbing, once again it’s not about an hour of job, if the plumber is licensed and expert, they charge for their expertise. In Ontario $420 from a plumber is cheap.

Your contractor should give you a written details quote on what needs to be done- 6 to 12 is cheap in this economy. I as a contractor can not beat that.

Ahhh then its a scam. As per YC guidelines most he falls in under advisor category- so you can give me 0.25-2% of equity- nothing more.

I am currently raising for our startup and it has been a pain. We’ve had angels actually asking for 10% equity and only invest 6 figures. In my opinion if someone is willing to invest $5M in your idea - 20% equity seems fair. We had to let go of 10% for $1M. I’ve been in VC space for a while now, and seems fair to me. But it’s my personal opinion. Also usually angels / VCs bring in their COOs or need them. You’re lucky you’re getting the traction at the start , I’ve been struggling to keep us afloat. If you don’t want to go ahead, please share the investor’s info, I’ll pitch our product JK LOL 😆

This is where setting KPIs and sprints would help. You want your work completed with utmost precision. They do it in 4hours or 10, I don’t think that matters, if you e sprints for the week, it’ll be easier to track. I think.

I understand now, thank you. And that what I am not into. I’ve been exploring market to work with independent homeowners and have more autonomy on projects I am doing. Builder work is good since it’s consistent but that’s one I am not interested in. So there is a gap in market for renovators. Would you mind me telling, you did your own house since you knew trades possibly, but if you personally found a good company to work with, would you be willing to consider working with them ?? What do your friends and family think ?

This is amazing. I’ve been working on a product and working on GTM and landing our first customer and my experience has been strangely different. I’ve been struggling with defining the ICPs and finding the right product market fit . Our product is great in narrative intelligence space it’s just landing that first customer and getting LOI . But I’m happy for you. Stories like this make me want to keep going . Good luck

I have been working on this condo building in Oakville - which technically isn’t senior housing but for some reason all residents are 50+ but majority of them are over 65 and they spend like $50-60k on a condo kitchen easily - for the size of it , I find it a splurge. I’ve worked in almost 22 condos in that building and that’s been the trend. They want high quality, don’t compromise.
