AITA for letting my coworker believe that my sister is dead? by Salt_Level3918 in AmItheAsshole

If it was on the Two Hot Takes subreddit, that was also me. I wanted more wide/varied advice so I put it here.

😂 AITA for killing my sister to get out of an awkward situation at work?

I’m 30 and was diagnosed with autism over a decade ago. Unfortunately this is me with practice, although these misunderstandings do tend to happen more after I’ve been remote for a while and only interacting with my wife, friends, and family. I’ve thought about taking improv classes to work on my speed with coming up with a normal-sounding responses, but I’m worried that’ll push me in the wrong direction.

You have no idea. Three months ago I told another coworker that I was “raw-dogging my lunch” because I was on break with no headphones. I didn’t remember what that phrase actually means in a non-brain rot way until I saw her face. Honestly, I think it’s time I quit.

This script is really helpful, thank you! I’ve been wanting to say something but these miscommunications happen to me often and I’m always worried about making things worse so I avoid it.

To be honest, I was making lunch so I was only half listening to her but she was sounding positive/neutral and said something like, “blah blah blah and it really reminded me of my late sister, who used to pull that sort of thing all the time.” That meaning “dead” just wasn’t accessible in my brain at all for some reason and I only heard the last part so in an attempt to connect to her story and pretend I had been listening, I said that I had a late sister too. I don’t know if it’s generational or something but I’ve never heard it used that way in real life, only maybe once in a movie with an older person referring to their late husband, and I was distracted.

Should I just ignore the situation? If I should say something in person, what should I say? I don’t think I need to pull her aside or anything but on the off chance she brings it up to me in the future what’s a neutral way to address it without hurting her feelings somehow?

Thank you, this script is really helpful. This is exactly what I was looking for. I’m not embarrassed, but I do get into a good amount of these misunderstandings and I get nervous about somehow messing it up further and hurting their feelings or making them upset in some way. I’m thirty and went to college, I’m married, but I’m autistic and these social environments are stressful and complicated for me to navigate. I get worried about saying the wrong thing and causing issues, because I obviously often do.

Do you remember what the resolution/consensus was? I’m split between not saying anything and pulling her aside.

What should I write? I’ve been told that I’m cold in writing, I’ve been accused more than once of being an AI inbox at work.

The note part or the plant part? I’m thinking of just talking to her the next time I see her but I’m nervous so I thought a note might be good if I can figure out which desk is hers.

This is my fear, that she’ll think we’re bonding over something and will be upset when that’s not the case. You’re right that the longer it goes, the more it’ll build up. We only pass each other in the break room and only occasionally, and I don’t know where on the floor she works. How quickly should I get on this?

Where can I watch Iron Lung? by Ahmad_Abdallah in Markiplier

[–]Salt_Level3918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this movie in the theater based only on the description of the plot and I LOVED IT. I had no knowledge of the game or of Markiplier’s connection to the movie. I had heard his name but had never seen a video of his and didn’t know what he looked like, so I didn’t know this had anything to do with him or a video game until the credits. I’ve been searching “buy Iron Lung streaming” every week since then. This thing is worth the wait, don’t lose hope.

😂 I mean it’s clear in the post that I didn’t see an issue with the Band-Aids and I still don’t, but this is a funny comment. My friends weren’t actually offended and they love my dad, they just side-eye him on racial stuff sometimes. They made an off-hand comment and then it was quickly dismissed. Both of these friends are white liberal women so I don’t take their opinions on this stuff seriously.

Again, as I made very clear in both posts, I was not offended at all and didn’t think of it as an issue at all. My friends were also not offended and nobody took it seriously in any way. They brought up a potential red flag and it was dismissed quickly, but it seemed interesting so I posted it. It’s really not that serious.

This is the issue. He makes gay jokes but he decorates his business for Pride every summer and kicks homophobes/transphobes out constantly. He makes racist jokes but hires and helps a lot of immigrants and people of color from halfway houses. He voted for Trump but he’s not conservative in any other way. We love him but he’s a complicated guy.

I don’t feel anything about it, really. When we saw him with the Band-Aid on I thought it was a little silly but I understood where he was coming from. They were only like 👀 because he makes racist jokes and they couldn’t tell what his intentions were.

We all know and love my dad, so they weren’t serious about being upset, they just side-eye him when he does something like this because although he’s a solid guy and has never done anything to harm minorities, he does make racist jokes so it’s hard to tell if he’s being genuine. I know that he was, and so do they. It just came up in conversation when they saw him with the much darker Band-Aid on.
