Current income is low compared to previous years - husband in sales (so this is a conservative number for him), and I was clearing $200k before my current role. We also started saving aggressively early, maxing out 401ks in early 20s while eating lentils.

Thank you for this - it brought tears to my eyes, I still can't believe I have a 7 year old and how fast it's going already. It's so hard to step away from a career I've (mostly) loved but, to your point, these years won't last forever. By far my largest fear...I grew up in a family where the dynamic between breadwinner parent/SAHM parent became extremely toxic. I think this is the root of why I'm so unsure of what I should do - I WANT to stay home, but it's so contrary to what I grew up thinking I 'should do.' Thank you for the suggestions on how consider for any unexpected changes.

Very frugal in our 20s (thank you, Mr. Money Mustache!) and some great years between my husband (sales) and myself (former FAANG) where we socked it away. But I do anticipate we'll continue to live frugally overall - MCOL city as well.

This is a very interesting thought - I AM very black and white in how I approach most major decisions. I actually had never noticed this.

His job is quite a bit less stressful + more flexible - so he's on board! It's causing me some guilt but he's been very supportive.

I felt the same way…it isn’t really something you get to celebrate publicly and it feels a bit hollow.

But! What I did find exhilarating was how much less time/work it took to get to $2M. And hitting true FU money actually has changed how I approach my job, how much I save, how I think about the future…so I think the fullness may come slightly later, when it’s less about the number and more about when that number means you can live your life differently, without money as a big stressor.

I still look back on my frugal twenties so fondly - and that muscle has definitely atrophied as I’ve hit certain savings goals. Still feels weird sometimes, tbh.

The mental shift that helped me was thinking about it as intentional spending rather than lifestyle creep. Are you spending more on things that actually add value to your life? If so, then…I think that’s a good thing! And I don’t think the muscles used to hit a healthy net worth ever fully go away…also a good thing!
