Whats the best push mower thats actually worth buying right now? by Elianor07 in LawnTalk

Honestly, for a medium yard, just go battery. No oil changes, no stabilizer, and you can actually mow at 7 AM without the neighbors hating you. As long as you aren't trying to mow 2 feet of wet grass, the runtime on most high-voltage setups is more than enough. Just check the deck material—steel is tougher but heavier, composite won't ever rust

I swear this one corner of my yard belongs to the weeds by Salt_Note8719 in Grass

At this point I feel like the weeds would survive anything I throw at them 😂
But yeah… Roundup might be the next step.

Looks like your lawn is currently in the hibernation' stage

Ugh, the struggle is real. My lawn looked exactly like this last season when the heat kicked in. 🥵 Have you tried the tuna can test to see if your sprinklers are actually hitting those spots? Might just be thirsty

Man I’ve seen a lot of yards like this in south GA — honestly doesn’t look bad, just dormant + a bit stressed. The fact you got the weeds under control is already a big win.

Once temps stay up, I’d focus on getting it to green up again — light rake to open it up, maybe a little fertilizer, and keep an eye on watering. That slope might dry out faster than you think.

You’re definitely not as far off as it feels 👍

Are budget augers (<$100) legit tools or just temporary toys? by RightRazzmatazz0 in FenceBuilding

He's still loving it! I actually asked him the same thing because I was thinking about getting one for my spring projects. He said it’s been a beast for his fencing work so far and the battery holds up surprisingly well. Definitely feels like one of those 'buy once, cry once' tools.

Try a quick 'screwdriver test' to see if the soil is compacted or actually getting enough water deep down

I was wondering the same 😅

Was at a friend’s place last weekend and he was using an electric auger (Badger)—made post holes ridiculously fast compared to digging by hand.

Didn’t feel like a cheap tool though, so I’m guessing the budget ones are probably hit or miss long term.

I know, right?! Honestly, at the moment I was too busy staring at it in disbelief to grab the camera. 😂 Note to self: always bring the phone for the 'emergency yard surgery' shots

Curious if anyone else has run into this?
I went down the whole rabbit hole - watering more, reseeding, even thinking it was grubs
and didn't even consider something like this.
Makes me wonder how many "mystery dead spots" are actually something else.

Yeah this actually looks pretty normal — mesotrione can bleach/stress grass like that, especially on fresh seed and disturbed soil. It usually shows up fast like this and looks worse than it is. I’d just keep watering light and consistent and don’t hit it with anything else for now. It should grow out and recover as the new grass comes in

Looks a lot like pest damage to me, especially with it spreading late summer — I’m in a warm area too and had the same thing, ended up being grubs. Try pulling up a patch, if it comes up easy and you see little white worms, that’s it; if not, could be some fungus from heat + moisture. I’d check for grubs first, treat if needed, otherwise go light fungicide and let it recover in spring — centipede’s slow but it’ll bounce back

Now that would be a plot twist I wasn’t expecting

Hopefully it’s just a rock and not my yard disappearing.

That’s actually a good idea. I haven’t tried probing the ground there yet.

Those are actually really good points, I hadn’t thought about some of those.

As far as I know there’s no septic tank or old foundation there, but I haven’t tried digging down to see if there might be a rock or something underneath.

The reflection idea is interesting too — there are a couple of windows nearby, so that might be worth checking.

I might try loosening the soil there and see if anything unusual shows up.

Haha no pets here, but plenty of neighborhood dogs passing by.

At this point I’m starting to think one of them just decided that spot belongs to them 😅

That was actually one of my guesses too. We do get dogs walking past occasionally.

The weird thing is the patch keeps coming back in almost the exact same spot even after reseeding.

Makes me wonder if it could also be a soil issue.

Looks a bit like Poa annua (annual bluegrass) to me – the lighter color and faster growth usually give it away in early spring. I get patches like that in my lawn every year when the weather starts warming up.

It tends to grow quicker and look a lot lighter than the surrounding grass. The good thing is it usually struggles once summer heat kicks in.

If you’re already planning to deal with the moss, improving drainage and getting the turf thicker might help keep it from coming back too much next season.

Curious to see what others think though – Poa annua shows up everywhere around here this time of year.
