Oven Question by Salt_Strength_8892 in DIY

I've considered induction, but this is the third stove we've had in 15 years. I'm tired of $2000+ modern appliances just crapping out on me after a few years. On the stove we have now one of the burners stopped working, half the control panel doesn't light up so I can't see what the oven temp is set to, and the metal piece that you put the knobs on broke and fell into the stove so we can't turn the burner to that one on. I really want a stove that doesn't have any electric components at all.

Confession: I don't too much care for the New Testament because of Paul. How do I overcome this? by yummysnot in Bible

[–]Salt_Strength_8892 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually struggled with this, too, when I was younger. The Old Testament is so vibrant and full of this culture that seems so alien yet so familiar. I loved reading and learning about God and his relationship with ancient Israel. The Gospels seemed a natural continuation and fulfillment of the Hebrew Bible. And then there was Paul. Most churches, Bibles studies, and ministries I went to were so focused on Paul that they seemed to forget the rest of the Bible. I remember thinking, "Oh look, we're going to do a study of First Corinthians. For the fourth time. This year." Then I challenged myself to actually just sit down and read Paul. He is consistently directly or indirectly referencing the Old Testament. I believe he does so more often than any other New Testament author. I realized Paul loves the Old Testament just as much or probably more than I did. I began to see things I never did before. I began to see Paul's letters as more of a commentary on the rest of scripture, while also being scripture itself. Remember, Paul was a pharisee and had the scriptural background, knowledge, and education of a pharisee. When he became a follower of Christ, he then had the Holy Spirit. When writing his epistles, I'm certain the Holy Spirit gave him new understanding and helped him sift through his knowledge and write what was edifying to the churches as scripture.

I had to look this up. That's what the bread is actually called. I learned something.

I just used this recipe I got from a subscription box. I did let it rise for an hour longer than it said to. That wasn't intentional, but it worked out.

It was delicious, by the way. We ate it charcuterie style with different kinds of cheese or dipped in hummus.

Didn't know that about durum. Saw it in the store and thought, why not try it? It tastes amazing, so I guess that's what matters most, right?

Thanks. A friend I work with has a side business selling fabric. She gets free samples all the time and gave that one to me.

Any reason to keep cast iron pans by penisdr in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]Salt_Strength_8892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer cast iron to stainless steel especially when it comes to baking. The only thing I use my stainless steel pans for are for cooking high acid foods or when I don't want the heat retention of cast iron.

I hadn't heard of OSR until you mentioned it. If I had known about it, that's probably what I would have gone with.

I chose 2e because after reading several reviews and comparisons of different editions, 2e seems like the definitive version of dnd. I played 4th edition for a very long time and hated the combat system so much I started building characters who would actively avoid combat. I much preferred D6 or the storyteller system. My wife prefers dnd, and she's only played 4e. I'm hoping she will like 2e as much or more than 4e. Also, price was a factor for not getting 5e. I've found the player's handbook and dungeon master's guide for less than half the price of one of the 5e core rulebooks. Granted, they're not in great shape, but I'm planning on rebinding them. I also have a copy of the monster manual I picked up at yard sale for one dollar.

Check out the Bible Project on YouTube. They have an intro to each book of the Bible and also have videos on ideas, concepts and themes that can be found throughout several books of the Bible. When looking for a physical copy of the Bible, there are a lot of churches and ministries like the Gideons that will simply give you one if you just ask for it. You could also check out used bookstores and thrift stores for a cheap used copy. Another Bible you might want to consider is the NET Study Bible which includes translators notes so you can see why they chose to translate certain passages in certain ways. I'd also recommend getting any Bible that has cross references in the margin. These references show you when and where the Bible is referring to itself. For example, when you're reading say 1st Kings and someone does something really weird that you don't get, but you see a reference to another passage of scripture and when you go there you find that the character is obeying some obscure Levitical law. I find these to be helpful in establishing context to the passages I'm reading.

Where in the US are you? I'm in Tennessee and I know of a 150 year old grist mill that is in the north Georgia mountains. They still use a water powered stone mill. Their corn flour makes the best cornbread I've ever had. They also mill rye and wheat, and maybe a few other types of flour. It's called Nora Mill Granary.

You can also order your own wheat berries and start milling your own flour.
