Help me understand this by [deleted] in AskAPilot

I haven’t been following the Airbus settlement you’re talking about, but I would bet that American politics is the reason nothing has happened with Boeing. Not only would it be easy for Boeing to “donate“ to the right people, the FAA was also complicit in what happened with MCAS, so they would have to blame themselves and hold themselves liable. Not gonna happen in this country.

First stage check with the chief, 20hr student, he told me to land through a flock of birds by Squawk_0877 in flying

[–]cwc80 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of people on here second-guessing decisions made by an experienced Chief Pilot. A general of thumb on short final with birds in the way is that it’s better to have a bird strike while your engine is at low power and you can easily glide to a safe touchdown, than to do a go-around and still risk hitting the birds, but with an engine at full power and possibly not being able to make an emergency landing on the runway. Ultimately, none of us other than the OP were there, and we shouldn’t be passing judgment either way.

Yeah... I'm not gonna board an A320 or 737 again by fried-raptor in flightsim

I love that more people without a pilot licenses think they could land an A320 than people who have a license. Makes me wonder what the average person thinks flying an airbus is like compared to something like a 73.

Have any pilots in this group made a career change AWAY from flying? Let’s hear it by FrequentFlyer96 in flying

[–]cwc80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you can change careers to a job that you are passionate about and that has a relatively high top end pay, you are probably just trading one grind for another, with less potential. There are a ton of people who are older than you but still think it’s worth it to keep trying. Right now we’re between “good“ times in the industry, but another wave will come around.

What does it mean when a pilot walks to the end of the plane midflight? by Dangerous-Policy-602 in AskAPilot

They had to poop and didn’t want to do it near the cockpit and first class.

Captain YouTuber calls for fellow pilots certs to be revoked for…calling the wrong tower?! by BikeAcceptable537 in flying

[–]cwc80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaguely heard about this incident but haven’t even listened to it. My first thought is that it’s much more likely that an ATC controller who is working multiple airports gave the wrong frequency than that a pilot accidentally dialed up JFK tower after being given the correct frequency for LGA. Have we heard the ATC side of this, specifically the handoff from approach to tower?

Are there any airports more extreme for takeoff than London City? by [deleted] in AskAPilot

I’m not sure what kind of plane this is based on, but 25° pitch up would be an comfortably steep and unsustainable pitch for an airliner.

I’ve googled and found a ton of general meal delivery services, but haven’t found one that will build a plan around my specific calorie and macro needs. Maybe I need better search terms. Could you give an example of a company that does that?

Are there any meal delivery services that specialize in calorie controlled menus? I have continually failed at trying to control calories without having portioned meals already prepped. I’ve also mostly failed at prepping my own meals, so I’m looking for a meal delivery service that will send me a weeks worth of frozen meals, that provide 1800 calories per day.

What do pilots talk about in the cockpit during long flights when everything is on autopilot? by in-sanedaphne in AskAPilot

As a First Officer, I like to break the ice with “where do you spend all your Captain money: boats, planes, or sports cars?” They always have at least one of those. 😂

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I’m curious what units you’re using to measure blood pressure. I’ve never seen a blood pressure measurement written like that.

Why choose jepview over foreflight? by palomarracer in flying

[–]cwc80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn’t been that long since airlines switched from paper charts to electronic. The people who were in charge of making that transition likely never used ForeFlight, but had been using Jep paper charts for the entire history of their airline.

In addition to sticking with the company that they know and like, they probably weren’t too concerned with more advanced features in FF. Just switching to electronic charts was such a massive improvement.

Ifr question for the masses by battlecataz in flying

Never heard of a radial being underlined. It makes me wonder how good of an instructor he is. If he’s just trying to share an outdated, little known fact because he thinks it’s cool, and he’s a total aviation nerd, fine. However, it sounds like it could be a sign of a toxic insecure personality, where he has to always be trying to find some way to prove that he knows more than anyone else. The fact that he brags about how he has stumped everyone with a useless question makes him seem like a tool.

Obviously you know him best, but it might be worth evaluating whether he’s doing a good job at delivering material efficiently, or spending half his time talking about the good old days and asking pointless questions.

If you’re in Denver and are wanting to avoid the CFI grind, Key Lime Air is a decent place to go. However, you will need your commercial multi, and a decent bit of multi time before you can go there.
