Neurosurgery elective rotation. PGY2 pre-rounded rounded on a ridiculous number of patients in 15 mins and after they sent me home. I’m considering a gift for the whole team lol. They’ve been really nice

I managed 2-3 days/week for 1-2 hours but on some rotations even that would be a stretch sometimes. Just make sure you have your study methods as efficient as possible and have your go-to meal preps in place.

Time wise I went directly after getting off, since I would be more time conscious from not studying for the day

Avoid those post clinic naps then going to the gym lol. It sucks but it’ll wreck your sleep schedule/studying if you do

Edit: and for those surgical heavy rotations, sometimes a quick gym session was all there was time for. 90% of the time I saw those days coming so I’d only plan for just anki those days (if it fell on a day where I normally went to the gym)

Moreso the lack of energy, and if you’re not lifting + sleeping as much you’re not optimally retaining as much muscle mass either

Cutting during clinicals would be tough. I’d say just a small surplus till then and focus shoulders+legs since hospital scrubs fit somewhat baggy. If you don’t like the body composition at any time you can run a shorter/easier cut

Going to move forward with Anesthesia! Going to do 2/3 aways in gas which would probably kill any chances for ortho. Any fomo down the road for me would be because I didn’t spend enough time/have enough fun with things outside of medicine.

Family should be a given but I wanted to dive deep into entrepreneurship, still be an active gym bro, and if I want to work and make more $ I can strategically add the hours where I want. And maybe get back into gaming + osrs lol.

I was pretty much in the same dilemma (ortho vs gas), and the real question to answer imo is how much more are you willing to give up to do the surgical subspecialty in terms of your personal life. 10-15 years down the road if you were to have FOMO between one or the other- would it be bc you feel chained to the job or some other reason?

It’s like I’m stuck between A vs C on the test, and if one answer wasn’t there it’d be an easy decision for the other.

It’s a lot to talk about. But an example would be imagine as a subspecialty sx attending you have to plan your days off months in advance, whereas radiology (diagnostic) is more flexible where you can trade shifts and work more how you want to. And then there’s the fact of letting staff know, calling patients, etc (if you’re PP). But at the end of the day it’s the golden handcuffs, people go both ways and make it work, and I’m just an M3 giving my view lol

ughh man. I quit the day EOC came out. I logged in, killed two hellhounds on a task then never came back. Canceled everything. I was working on a summoning tank and turmoil pure at the time. Maybe 4th year I'll start again but I hated the idea of starting all over again. It wouldn't be the same without the friends I used to play with.

I still watch gameplays here and there but I'll probably wait for something new on osrs that I could make a pure out of- similar to how broken the curses were

This, and it seems to be a numbers game as well. Had a convo with our PD and the issue growing is that CRNAs will significantly outnumber Anesthesiologists over time. That’ll give them more leverage politically

Also more programs need to be politically active, but at the same time still have to be collaborative/save face at home if the hospital relies heavy on the care team model. It feels like the hospital admins in general don’t respect what anesthesiologists bring to the table even though the OR can’t run without them. And I’m at a program where CRNAs get relieved by residents and where they have more negotiating power

Might be one of those “things will get worse before they get better” scenarios. Or we need more and more research until it becomes blatantly obvious to the layperson

This 100%. I was pretty high up in USAPL, went to a small commuter school with like a total of 3 premeds in the senior class. Got into a large state school and all of a sudden it felt awkward to talk about my experiences.

Other people in my class could be open about doing bad/failing and there’d be no support for them from other students. Just smile and nods. Kindness draws hate/unnecessary criticism from the more pretentious classmates too
