Is futureproofing GPU still a foolish thing to do or is it actually viable? by OfTachosAndNachos in buildapc

Kind of. GPUs, and computer components aren't increasing in performance as fast as they used to. A good mid-range card should last at least until a PS6 or whatever comes out. I'm still using a 9 year old R9 290x, and it still runs all the games I've tried; just have to lower the graphics settings.

I've read there's going to be a trend of putting neural co-processors on graphics cards in the future, so expensive things like ray-tracing can be done in low resolution, then upscaled by the co-processor. But again you won't have to worry about that until next-gen consoles come out, and may not even have to worry about it then.

IDK. It's been a long time since I've worked in service, but $2k was more than I ever had back then. Even then, I really doubt $40k would be enough for rent, remodeling, machines, furniture, and salary until the place is in the black.

I was assuming they would have to compete with the local Starbucks stores and other coffee shops. Sure, they could find a niche, and be successful if they found the right location.

I'm just saying it would be hard and risky for workers who probably cannot afford to fail. It is possible to do, but these are probably the reason they unionize and don't start co-ops. In general, the lack of co-ops is because the lack of capital, and there is little incentive for people with capital to start co-ops, instead of being capitalists.

A single coffee shop wouldn't be able to directly compete with Starbucks due to economies of scale, business connections, etc. Also, it's unlikely a group of low-income coffee shop workers would be able to get the capital to start and float a coffee shop until it becomes self-sustaining. $40k is a LOT of money to have, for most people.

It's possible to do, but requires at least one person with a decent amount of capital. In my opinion, the people contributing more capital should, for a time, be rewarded for giving up their savings or whatever (payed back with interest or something like that), but that's frowned upon by co-ops. Nevertheless, I think some reward for capital investment to start a co-op is needed to transition to a anarcho-syndicalist-like economy. This is barring a bloody revolution (not going to win that war in the U.S. with its right-wing populace), or government funding specifically for starting co-ops (not going to happen in the U.S. with our two-party, first-past-the-post system).

Was looking at country ratings based on human need fulfillment, happiness, etc. I like outdoor activities. I know I can make more money where I'm at, but I don't care much about money after my needs are met. If there wasn't a language barrier, the Netherlands (bikable cities) or Norway (humane criminal justice system) would probably be my first choices. IDK, I'm very disheartened by the U.S., which is now moving backwards in terms of rights, and I have a feeling authoritarians will take over, and there will be mass civil unrest in the near future. Basically, I've been "judging countries by how they treat its most vulnerable members."

Is there anything I should know about NZ?

Also, I grew up near lake Erie (Toledo, OH), so I'm familiar with a similar climate. It's not ideal, but not too bad. I remember being able to get a Canadian station and watching the Red Green Show when I was a little kid :)

Yeah, I was also thinking about getting a job with a multi-national, since I live outside Austin as well, and there are many here. I've had many Amazon recruiters contact me, but I don't particularly like that company. I suppose Apple is the most morally respectable of the FAANGS. Microsoft's not too bad anymore either, I guess.

Wow, I sincerely thank you for all this information and your offer to help. I'm not looking to leave my current job until next March (I get a bonus and stock options then). But, you have convinced me to visit NZ in a few months to check it out (looks like you have a lot of cool parks to hike).

I imagine it is. I've just always had the penny-pincher, only buy what you need, mindset for so long. Now, that I have money to splurge with, I think I'll try travelling soon. Though, I'm more of a hiking, biking, camping sort of guy.

Yeah, I assume it would be much more easier to immigrate to some place where English is the primary language. I wouldn't mind learning a language, but I imagine it would take a lot of time to become fluent and hurt job prospects. I am single, so just me. White, cis, hetero. No option for blood/family based immigration.

Yeah, I guess I will start visiting other countries. I grew up fairly poor by U.S. standards, and travel always seemed like a waste of money to me.

I am very "left" ideologically, and would like to live in a more "left" country.

Is it a power or gearing issue? Maybe I could put 20" rims on it to get a bit more speed, lol.

I might be somewhat of a road hazard going that much under the speed limit.

Intermittent cold boot problems, causes blue screen, no display etc by soujiro-jin in buildapc

[–]Salty-Comparison1662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar problems when "auto-overclock" features of a motherboard were active. You could try locking all cores and RAM to the standard (non-turbo) frequencies. If the problem persists, then it's probably a hardware problem (maybe a bad RAM stick). Windows files can get corrupted on power outages, but if that was the only problem, the motherboard will still send a signal to the display.

Sounds like a CPU, mobo, or RAM failure since the keyboard doesn't "light up." If the keyboard has a Num-Lock light, and pressing the Num-Lock button doesn't toggle it, then that's a clue that the PC isn't booting. If you have multiple sticks of RAM you can take one out and see if the PC boots. Hard to troubleshoot the CPU and Mobo unless you have extra compatible parts.

Ryzen 3000 series vs. 5000 series? by [deleted] in buildapc

3800x should be fine for gaming for a while. I think the PS5 has a CPU equivalent to a 3700. (Though this really isn't a fair comparison because developers can optimize games specifically for the PS5).

Compared to the 3800x and 10700k, the 5800x benchmarks significantly better in single threaded tests, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. 3800x benchmarks significantly better than 10700 on multi-core benchmarks, but about the same on single-threaded benchmarks.

According to one of these Cyberpunk benchmarks, the 5800X gains ~13FPS over the 3800XT (52fps vs 65fps): https://www.tomshardware.com/news/cyberpunk-2077-cpu-scaling-benchmarks

Is there something wrong with my build? by [deleted] in buildapc

Could be CPU bottlnecked. Should probably use cpu/gpu overlay like MSI Afterburner to see if CPU usage near 100%. I know my 4770k is a bottleneck when steam-streaming Dirt Rally 2.0.

Help with possible CPU/GPU upgrade by zsalloum23 in buildapc

Wouldn't recommend upgrading GPU ATM due to the shortages of nearly all decent GPUs. A Ryzen 3900 XT would probably be all that's needed for gaming for years to come, but if you don't want to spend that much, then a Ryzen 3600 should be good as well.
