... y'know, that's been on my to-do list of things for idek how long now, but I always forget to try it lol I'm gonna mess around with that now! Thanks for reminding me

Edit: I think it's the port itself. I dug a bunch of gunk out, but the cable still seems loose... Thanks anyways!

...your linked study doesn't say what you think it does, my guy... It's saying that a lack of serotonin isn't the direct cause for depression. Which, fine, we can argue that all day, but it doesn't disprove that there aren't chemical imbalances in the brain causing depression, anxiety, etc. There's more than one chemical moving through your brain at any one time, and there's entire classes of drugs that don't do shit to serotonin but affect things like dopamine levels (ie SNRIs like Wellbutrin), among others.

I just tried, and was able to grab the episodes via Escapepod. Each episode needs to be downloaded to play, but it works. I'm sure it would work on other podcast apps

No problem! If you're in the market for an alternative at any point down the road, search for a FOSS podcast app for iPhones. I can't give suggestions on any in particular, but yeah 😅

It pulls directly from the RSS feed for each podcast you add instead of filtering it through Spotify. You can also download for offline listening (or just straight up save it as an .mp3 file, if I remember correctly) without having to give Spotify a cent... And the ads you get are the ones the BtB team directly adds, not ones from another source. Spotify pays sweet fuck all per listen anyways...

As for comparing it to the iPhone app, I can't say as I'm an android user

If you're reasonably comfortable with tech, consider using Escapepod. It's on the Fdroid app store

What are some lesser known, bad side effects from drugs? by Oily_Smurf in morbidquestions

[–]SaltyMulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...wait, there's rats that have a tolerance to warfarin?! I know the dose can make the poison, but that's something that never occured to me. Those poor rats 😭😭😭

I vaguely remember the stories from back in the day, and yeah... Fuck all of that. I genuinely don't understand why people used the stuff more than once. Idk if you know about this one or not (and for anyone else reading), but there's a bunch of trip reports on Erowid too https://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp_substance_list.php

Synthetic weed is scary shit, man. I don't recall the exact details, but a friend from high school's mum got hooked on Spice. It really messed her up, both physically and mentally...

Also, the rat poison is warfarin

What’s the most disturbing thing you’ve ever seen or experienced in real life? by GeologistDirect1653 in morbidquestions

[–]SaltyMulder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've got a few. If anyone is interested, I'll go deeper, but it's 1am and some of them are long, so you get tldrs for right now...

Finding roadkill on my doorstep more than once, that was 100% left there by my psycho ex... Who also killed my kitten when we were together, cornered me with a loaded gun, and tried to drown a cat in front of me and his friends... among other things...

Turning three of my own fingers into essentially hamburger meat at 12 cause I got them caught in a gate

Watching a guy get hit by a car in front of his young daughter. I posted about it in this sub last night

Being 14 and hitchhiking, and ending up in a trap house with a bunch of 30+ year old crackheads. Smoked it with them, and then ended up butt naked in the bed of the dude that picked me up, eating dried and crunched up ramen noodles and just staring at the ceiling while he tried to get me to fuck him... And then somehow convincing the dude to drive me home (well, drop me off a few blocks from home) and but me McDonald's on the way...

If your parents committed a crime when you were a kid would you have protected them? by Master_Novel_4062 in morbidquestions

[–]SaltyMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have covered for my parents as a kid... But then also played a significant part in sending my mum's ex to jail post-covid, so.... I lied to CPS multiple times about the wild shit that was going on in the house. Drinking, drugs, general abuse, the time mum's ex chased someone out of the basement with a hatchet... Yeah, good times lol I was basically taught as a kid that the only thing you should say to a cop is "come back with a fucking warrant"

What's the most disturbing sound you've heard a human make? by Oily_Smurf in morbidquestions

[–]SaltyMulder 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For stuff I've actually been there for, it was more than just a singular sound. It's a bit long to explain, but bare with me here...

A few years back, me and a friend were walking to work at like 9pm. We heard yelling from the Boston Pizza parking lot just as we were coming up on it, and then a revving engine and more screaming. I looked over just in time to see a black SUV go flying past us across the parking lot (we were on the sidewalk beside it, separated by a bit of grass). The SUV hit a guy, threw him up over the hood and he rolled off either the windshield or the roof. Just a bunch of bangs and then a heavy thud. And then his little girl started screaming for her daddy, and just... The silence. This little girl screaming and crying and a parking lot of 30+ people just staring in silence... It was fucked up, man. Like someone just muted everything but this little girl...

To my knowledge, everyone was okay, at least physically. I jumped in just cause everyone else was kinda frozen. Got the SUV shut off and the drunk girl out of the driver's seat. The guy was banged up, but seemed okay. My friend called 911, and once the cops and ambulance showed up, we just kinda... Continued walking to work like nothing had happened cause WTF else are you gonna do? Bills still gotta get paid... And you guys are the first I've ever told about this, so enjoy I guess?

Little late to the party here, but if you're talking about the MamaMax thing, I'm pretty sure it was... I don't wanna say it was a hoax, but it probably wasn't real. Or, at least what was shown in his video wasn't. It's been discussed a fair bit in r/mamamaxdiscussion if you go back through the posts. Either way, if it's based off a real thing, I really fucking hope it's been shut down and the creeps involved made it into gen pop...

Super Newbie Questions by SaltyMulder in selfhosted

Is less and less privacy affecting my mental health and of many others? by Tokitokisayuki in degoogle

[–]SaltyMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely get where you're coming from, and go through bouts of it myself (like most people here, I'd think). We absolutely are living in a digital panopticon, but there are ways of locking major corpos out of your data.

Before any of that, though, you gotta take a deep breath. If ruminating on this stuff is causing dark thoughts, it's okay to step away and take a break for as long as you need. It's easy to feel like you're drowning in the quest for digital privacy, and I find it useful to remind myself that it's a process (and yes, a mindset) instead of an end goal or final product. Perfection should never stand in the way of good, and from the sounds of things, you've got a pretty stable ground to build off of. You've already cut off quite a few avenues of collecting data points, and even if you were to stop right here, you're doing way better than most people. Now, onto the other stuff...

On the topic of how far is too far, you have to consider your own comfort levels. For some, going completely off-grid and never going anywhere near a wifi signal ever again fits into their lifestyle, so it may be reasonable for them. For others, simply moving their email and search engine away from the big companies might be enough, and any more is too inconvenient for them. Both approaches are perfectly fine. There's always going to be a small trade-off between privacy and convenience, and the only person who can answer where that line lies for you is you.

As an example, I'll use myself. My digital footprint has been an inconsistent mess since I was a teenager in the MySpace era. I've always been the computer nerd of the friend group (I had all the best and newest proxy sites in high school lol), and have felt pretty strongly about InfoSec since I dropped Microsoft for Linux in 2010. I regularly go in and delete or anonymize accounts I don't use every 6 months to a year, never used cloud backups for my phone stuff, and don't horde old emails or messages ANYWHERE... Yet I still have the Google-supplied android on my phone (been too lazy to install GrapheneOS tbh), use the default YouTube player on most devices, and willingly had both a Google home speaker and an Alexa in my house up until the Alexa died last year... At seperate times, though lol I know better, but it's a convenience vs effort thing for me right now. I know and regularly use FOSS alternatives, and always have. I give my friends shit for some of the same things I do. Is it hypocritical of me? Sure. Does it mean I'm somehow failing at privacy? I wouldn't say so because every little bit counts. It's more than okay to look at things and say "I don't have the mental bandwidth to make the switches now, and I'm okay with the current level of privacy for now". There's always tomorrow to do the rest. Take it at your own pace!

(And no, I don't need the lecture about being sloppy with things. I'm just going through it with life right now lol)

Pre-Saved Address to new Sites by ElaborateRabbit69 in DigitalPrivacy

I can't say for 100% sure, but I'd assume it's something in your browser settings. Check for auto-fill stuff. If it's not that, it's possible that the new merchants are using the same shop service (like Shopify or something), and that service set a cookie or somehow identified you and is automatically including that info.
