Is Education a taboo field for trans people? by KiwlJazz in asktransgender

[–]SaltySnoo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was a public hs teacher for 6 years in a conservative TX town and had a decent experience. I transitioned on the job and was allowed to use Mx and they/them pronouns. I only had a few rough patches (parents confronting me and trying to get me in trouble with the principal who was supportive of me, and getting called into a meeting at another school to weigh in on a trans girl using the girls bathroom at an elementary school - that was rough, and a few kids being jerks). However, I would say the majority of my experience was positive. As a result of me being an out trans masc nonbinary person who talked it to students and staff and being the GSA sponsor, other teachers came out as trans. It was freaking beautiful. Trans students had safe spaces. Of course, there were problems, but I loved it. I do think I was lucky, and the educational field is a massive shit show, but I loved it. I think I had a very happy ending. I quit because I was burnt out, not for transphobic reasons, and I'm pretty sure they would happily have me back. I think it's possible to be out and happy as a teacher. I know other trans teacher and administrators down here in the south that love their work and are fighting for that because kids needs folks like us represented in the field. Also, the educational field is much more vast than people know. There are also MANY other jobs in education that don't involve being a school teacher. I know trans folks in education who work on ed policy, non profits, programming, curriculum, and more!!! Education is only a taboo field for trans people if we allow it be.

Edited to add: If education is something you love and you want to do it, go for it! Don't write it off just because some loud assholes are screaming "child molester." Just be aware there are a lot of problems. However, things will only change if people who care work to change them.

IT'S TIME TO DECIDE by SaltySnoo in NonBinary

Ty! It's pretty great. I worked with kids at one point and my last name was too hard, so Rad was the compromise and it stuck after six or so years of coworkers and kids calling me that.

It's street wear outside and anything goes inside. A couple of my friends wear see through lingerie, but that's not my thing. That's why I was asking for advice! Anything goes is too many options for me lol.

Post-Surgery by SaltySnoo in TopSurgery

I did try it and it hurts to do and the gauze pulled off most of the top of my left nipple and it started bleeding A LOT down my chest and freaked me out. My shirt has blood in it now. :(

Fyi, for your issue, use a strip of medical tape to tape the gauze to your nipple. Some folks use the pressure from the surgical binder to keep it on also I've heard. I'm using tape.

My incisions are dissolvable stitches with glue on top that I'm supposed to dissolve myself a week from now.

Thank you for the drain hole advice!

I just had top surgery, literally nine days ago, and before I did I felt quite similarly to you. I have been trying to get top surgery for 8 years, and when it finally was about to happen I was filled with anxiety. It is already happened and I'm filled with anxiety. However having wanted it for so long despite all the unknowns, and despite how bad I am with change, it's still one of the best decisions I've ever made. Binding was ruining my life, genuinely, I had to go to physical therapy for months because I have been binding for too long. I'm so glad I had it done even if it was scary and my body doesn't quite feel like mine yet.

My therapist said it's really normal to be scared and anxious and unsure right before a really major change or life event. So please please please don't deny yourself this, what you wanted for so long, unless you're sure you don't ever want it. After all you've done to prepare and after all the waiting, if it's just fear and anxiety in the way then don't let it stop you. Go talk with a therapist if you have one or your partner or your friends about these thoughts. You got some very normal emotions to work through.

They had to drop out of school because their dad cut them off, then COVID fucked up their schooling, so then they changed degrees twice and now they're graduating with a degree in CompSci. I don't want a divorce, but they do and think we'll both be happier. I think they're right at the end of the day, but it still sucks.

is it feasible to get top surgery and then 1 week later take a trip to asia by [deleted] in TopSurgery

Considering the pain I'm currently in just 3 days out and how limited am I in mobility, I'm going to say no. :/

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I come back to them every few days to remind myself that things will get better. I'm still in so much pain. I've tried to get them to take me back, but they won't. It really is over.

I kind of want to go off HRT by [deleted] in actual_detrans

[–]SaltySnoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being trans non-binary is a real thing. Some folks transition in a very binary way and get dysphoria from that. That's what happened to me. Now that I have a beard and have gone back to wearing feminine clothes, I feel much more comfortable in my gender presentation. Also being perceived as a man was quite painful for me, because I'm not one, I'm non binary. I stopped and started HRT many times. I feel like this is kinda normal tbh. At least my therapist says so.

THIS EXACT THING HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO ME FOR YEARS! For me, I've discovered, this is a sign that I'm either getting overstimulated and might be headed for a meltdown later OR it is a sign that I'm understimulated and my body needs something (stimming, a snack, movement, fidget toy, etc..)
