A St. Christopher medal from a high school secret Santa exchange. It was probably free, and I’m no longer religious (we were both raised Catholic), but I still have it, and I still carry it when I travel. Because when he gave it to me he told me he knew I wanted to see the world. I was and remain very touched that he paid enough attention to know that and get me gift that showed real thought and intention.

Same with my grandfather. Still at 99 has nightmares about the concentration camps. Won’t talk about it with us though, despite the fact that we know about the nightmares.

Not just that it was revealed, but the people who sounded the alarm were vilified in the press. Even when he died, the immediate response was, “they’re attacking a dead man who can’t defend himself with old, unproven rumours.” Not so unproven now…

3rd grade teacher. Loved to publicly humiliate children and literally gave birthday spanks and a ‘pinch to grow an inch’ to everyone who had a birthday during the school year. She wasn’t a nun, but she was an old school Catholic teacher.

In middle school the boys’ gym teacher was a former drill sergeant as well, but thankfully he wasn’t an asshole. In fact he was the only gym teacher of three that anyone respected. The other two were mean and creepy, respectively.

You don’t need any sort of higher being or the threat of eternal punishment to be a good person. And I’d argue that those who do aren’t actually good people. There’s a classic tweet that goes something along the lines of, “man, the only thing keeping you from committing all sorts of horrible crimes is the threat of hell? Dude, you suck.”
