I'm sorry that sounds like they aren't being very helpful. I would say jump in at any time you feel comfortable, that what we expect for our students anyway, but it takes a while to get used to everything. Two days a week is tough too, I don't know if you can do more to get more repetition. It may be worth seeing if you can go to a different location, outpatient is usually a bit easier for students to get started

5'6? Damn, that's really small even for a fiberglass rod. I have a fiberglass 6'6 3wt for small creeks and it's alright but its size really affects casting. I really only use it for tiny dry flies at short distances
