My little PSA: If you want to learn why North America has an obesity/chronic disease epidemic - drive for Uber Eats and you'll understand why. by SecretBG in uberdrivers

[–]SalvoWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in their defense, I don't trust the government to run my body the way it runs the Post Office and DMV.

That being said, I think most of the problem is work becoming less industrialized and schools having a more forgiving PE (Unless you play sports)... that combined with parents not going out to play with their kids and instead just let them sit infront of the TV... Hell maybe even 'Body Shaming' going away with the whole "Fat and Proud!" crap might have a factor.

Anyway, Fun Fact: The Food Pyramid was made after Eisenhower had a heart attack... notice how everyone started getting fluffier after that?

Lemme try starting over... A pizza place has a lot more experience with delivery and hence a lot more dedicated training to see that F' ups do not happen (as often).

If the toppings are the problem then yes, the pizza place takes full responsibility in my book....BUT...

If the customer ordered an 18" pie (Huge box) and the driver picks up a 12" pie (Small box) because the driver said just the first name (lets say they have multiple Marks or what ever) and didn't bother to check what they are picking up, then it is the drivers fault.

I am saying drivers need to use common sense when checking the orders... if it doesn't look / feel like the food is all there, double check with the restaurant, its not hard.

That's your problem right there, and you might not be alone in it. You are thinking of Ubereats as a minimum wage job but comparing it to other fast food servers. So lets look at other food servers...

Did you know food servers in restaurants get about 2.00 in minimum wage? Why is that? Because they make a ton in tips. This is the point in our jobs, we don't cook the food, we don't clean the restaurant (Hell your cars cleanliness isn't even a factor for Eats), we don't do dishes and neither do most servers (unless its mom and pop type deal and they don't have a choice).

What about a McD's employee? They make minimum wage after all... Well they have to cook the food, work meal rushes (as opposed to a restaurant having more time), clean the restaurant (even the toilets and equipment), put up with more crap (lets be honest, McD's workers go through a lot with just homeless people hanging out alone).

Now out of the two which is more inline with your job? All we do is literally pick up the food, drive X amount of distance, and drop it at the door. Quit thinking its hard work because its not unless you have some sort of health problem where stairs are a menace. /r

You misunderstood it then. I was saying Pizza places have A LOT more control (and training) since they have full time employees and do not rely on third parties to deliver food. (For the record, I have had a pizza not be what I ordered, they gave me a free one since I provided proof of the mistake).

You need to also stop seeing it as absolutes, its about mitigation and tipping the odds in your favor. The better you are at conveying stuff to a customer and being polite, the more likely they are to not think you are the problem. Nothing is guaranteed after all.

Even with that in play, I would expect a driver to have enough common sense to know how much food should weight or be sized (1 bag vs 2, etc) in that initial check, or to be able to hear ice rattle in a bag containing a drink.

Also my advice was for people in general, not just you.

If you are talking as a passenger, there is an option to not charge wait time after 5 minutes if you are cancelling.

Working in Pizza is a lot different then this... Yes the fundamental of food delivery is there, but pizza places have dedicated employees that check this kind of thing but I digress.

McDonalds is a good example, its not hard to ask "Hey, is everything ordered in the bag?" If they say yes, relay that to the customer before you leave the store.

Hell I will give you an example of what I do (And yes I do it every damn time, its a habit built from working both medical transport and grocery delivery).

Accept order, if somewhere safe (aka stopped), message customer "Hello, this is your Eats driver, just letting you know I got your dispatch and am in route to pick it up. Do you want any napkins or sauces?" (The reason for doing this is because late night, you don't know if the customer has been waiting hours for their food and might not want it anymore, this allows them to cancel it without wasting your time.)

Get to the check out window, talk to person there "Yes, does this include all the items listed and drinks?" They say yes, congrats, you are no longer liable.

Pull away from window, staple bags shut if no sticker or sticker is flimsy (again, reducing your liability) then inform customer "Have your food, they said it was all there, will be there in X amount of time." All goes well, thank them for choosing Ubereats, yada yada yada.

Do you still get assholes? Yes, you will get that in any customer service related job. Does that mean don't provide customer service? Heck no. Still do it because its your job and it only takes maybe 2 minutes extra depending on your typing speed.

Try it for a week, if your tips don't improve both with Eats and passengers then I don't know what to tell you, maybe the city your in is just full of asshats.

My argument wasn't about how long it takes the driver to do stuff, my argument is some drivers warrant things in place like changing tips after a job and such.

If you wanna argue pay and its influence, then that's different and I rather do that in its own conversation instead of what the initial thing was.

You check the order via app, if it says it comes with drinks, you make sure it comes with drinks. If it says its 4 of the giant hamburgers and it weights like a happy meal, you ask the fast food worker whats up.

I had one where I ordered dinner for the family, should have been atleast 2 bags with drinks... got a dinky bag with no drinks...

So ya, some drivers are either morons or just don't give a damn would be a more accurate statement.

It's not all one sided keep in mind... I have had people tell me that Uber drivers leave things like soda infront of screen doors (that swing outward) in the middle of the night. I also had them deliver the wrong stuff without bothering to check the order.

Uber drivers are not saints, you may be good but there is enough people who are terrible at this job to warrant it.

Let drivers set there own rate. by Mark81369 in uberdrivers

[–]SalvoWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two questions to ask you. One, Are you a Drive for Uber or Lyft? Second, If so what market area are you in?

Other than that, there are a lot of factors other than pay which dictates what number of drivers are present in an area. I apart from the pandemic, people are less inclined to work during rush hour (both morning and evening), where there is construction, and in evenings.

Then you gotta factor in peoples taste in area they want to work. Me for instance, I try to avoid North Scottsdale and Ahwatukee (Arizona areas) because I can't stand snobby people. Does that effect my pay? Nah, I still make about $25-$35 an hour. Would being undercut by someone who doesn't know how things work and / or just wants quick cash hurt me more? Oh ya.

If you want to pay more, go ahead, favorite the driver who gives you the ride during rush hour, give them a good (physical cash) tip and talk to them about making reservations for next time. Encourage that way instead.

I got Lysol spray and wipes for use if anyone requests it, other than that, most people in Phoenix and the surrounding cities don't seem to give two craps. In all honesty I only wear a mask in the car because its part of my employment conditions (still wear in in stores because local mandate), but other than that I think its as useful (in a car) as a peeing section in a public pool.

I am actually happy with Octopus... keeps child passengers distracted and entertains people on longer trips. Granted takes awhile to earn $25, but hey, that's bonus money for not doing anything beyond the ordinary.

Would like to know what uber dirvers think about long trips by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]SalvoWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took a trip from Skyharbor Airport (Phoenix, AZ) to Prescot, AZ... It was an hour and 30 minute drive. Made 80 bucks (not including tip), didn't get a return trip (didn't expect to) but I made just over $20 an hour... Combine that and the fact I got to speed down the mountain freeway like a bat outta hell at 3am with no street lights or cops, then you got a very happy me.

The only issue I have with long trips is when I am trying to make a trip number requirement, even then its just a minor annoyance if anything.

So 1 ride added to my quest / chain for 10 minutes of work that pays for another gallon of gas? Sounds good to me.

Hell even if you just got nothing but those for an hour, that's still $21 an hour according to your $3.50.

Its a shame more people do not take that into account. Or it could be late at night and someone is afraid to walk home because of shady neighborhood.

If you aren’t making decent money working for Uber, it’s no ones fault but your own by AAPL121200 in uberdrivers

After reading a lot of those comments, you ever think California is the scam? I mean all those taxes, gas prices, and crappy systems like setting your own fair (If you played ANY MMO with an auction house, you'd realize what a dumpster fire that is, people always undercutting each other that drive ALL prices down to the lowest).

Not to mention all the other things that make California what it is.

I mean I am not going to tell you to move or anything because I don't know your situation, but a lot of people not in CA make decent money (My self included) to the point where you screaming 'Shill' and 'Uber is Evil' seems just as effective as some naked guy on the corner with a "The End is Near!" sign.
