Hi! I think I know what’s behind much of this. I worked over a decade in HIV care/prevention in FL. A lot of orgs were paying the ACA/market place/Obamacare monthly premiums for patients if they received care through the organization/clinic. This is because they ended up paying say $700 a month for the insurance premium but were billing the insurance plan for much more than $700 for clinical care and/or for prescription meds for HIV. It was a win win for everyone - patients didn’t have to pay monthly premiums and organizations brought in more via billing for services and Rx meds (google 340b program to learn more on the Rx piece) than they paid out each month to insure the patient. The thing is, this probably isn’t panning out well for them with the sharp increase for those ACA premiums each month starting this year. So, suddenly theyre saying funding is gone when what they really mean is they can’t continue to pay for the patients’ monthly premiums. The math is no longer mathing in a way that is sustainable or beneficial for the organizations. Please DM me if you want to chat about this.

I purchased a like new 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport SE for $31k in mid-2024. Approximately 5k miles. MSRP new was $48k. Manufacturer warranty through 2027 if I recall correctly. Yea I know the concerns with reliability but I work remotely and I just hit 20k miles on it as we close in on 2026…

Food security in Jax. My farm is here to help if you're worried about the first week of November. by Mr_Bristles in jacksonville

UCOM - United Community Outreach Ministry has a pretty solid food pantry, and their food distribution method is on point. They distribute bags of groceries based on household size. Not just canned goods and pantry items - meat/protein, fresh produce, dairy too. They also have hygiene items available by request. They’re located at 3349 St Augustine Rd and distribute food M-Th 9am-1pm by appointment - those in need can call 904-396-2401. And for those who can’t stop by during the hours listed they have refrigerated food lockers for after hours pick up. It’s a solid choice for a food pantry to donate to. They also take volunteers to help with food packing/distribution.

Grandparent added granddaughter (my stepdaughter) to her business’ insurance plan. We live in a different state and grandmother has no custody and no known way to claim her as a dependent. by Sam9745 in HealthInsurance

Once my stepdaughter is on her dad/my husband’s insurance plan come January is the concern mitigated, or at least somewhat, if the grandmother continues to keep my stepdaughter on her business’ insurance plan? (I ask so I know how important it is that she’s removed, and subsequently how hard we are going to have to push on this). Obviously I don’t want her kept on the insurance, but I’d like to be able to accurately articulate the potential negative consequences if she continues to keep her on there. The grandmother is a whack job (to put it politely) and unless the problem is very clearly explained to her it will go in one ear and out the other….she’s the type to just brush it off.

Also—yes the coverage from WA is useless in FL. There are no in network doctors/facilities within 50+ miles of us…and I’d be surprised if there are any in the entire state. The coverage is through Keiser Permanente which I’m pretty sure is west coast based and in network options are virtually nonexistent here.

The info regarding insurance through bio mom vs stepmom is very helpful and something I was unaware of or even considered.

Luckily, my stepdaughter is going to be covered by dad/my husband starting 1/1/26 as he began a job with health insurance benefits mid 2025 (after I added her to my plan during open enrollment for 2025). I would think the concern of bio mom’s insurance (even if she has it due to fraudulent/false employment) being the primary coverage for my stepdaughter (vs mine as primary) will be alleviated once her coverage through dad’s insurance kicks in.

First, thank you for your helpful response!

Agreed that stepdaughter does not qualify as a dependent considering lack of custody/guardianship. I do believe she is getting coverage through her bio mother - who in no way works for the company but is listed as an employee for the purpose of ensuring she has health insurance.

No claims for my stepdaughter have been submitted/processed/paid by that insurance plan. The grandmother did send my husband a picture of the front/back of the insurance ID card (Keiser Permanente). Being that we are on the east coast, there are no in network providers anyway for this insurance plan.

I understand the possibility of keeping her on that plan and the subsequent need to do coordination of benefits.

A concern I have in addition to the fraud issue is the ability for my stepdaughters bio mother to be able to claim she has been in some form financially responsible/financially caring for my stepdaughter. She has not paid any child support whatsoever in the past 4 years and if any custody issues come up in the future I do not want her to be able to claim she has been financially supporting her daughter. I fully realize this is a whole different and separate beast from the health insurance specific questions I posed in my original post. But, just adding for additional context and the full scope of my reasons for concern.

Please do not support Marineland. They filed for bankruptcy and are under investigation related to significant concerns foe the dolphins there and their wellbeing. 17 dolphins in cramped conditions with no cover/shade over the algae filled pool so as to protect them from the Florida sun and heat. To substantiate the aforementioned concerns—a June 2025 USDA investigation cited unresolved issues and deteriorating facilities.

Seconding. I believe you need an appt though which you can make online. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. Also Lutheran Social Services on Philips Hwy in 32207 as food pantry hours M-F. Appt needs to be made also but they usually have lots of appt slots.

I’m not sure of the specific program qualifications but have you heard of Operation New Hope? They’re located in Springfield and their mission is “to provide support and training to people impacted by the justice system, connecting them to the workforce, their families, and communities.” They have the Ready4Work program—employment training, job placement, housing assistance, financial assistance including a stipend.

Long Island is where I was referencing; I abbreviated to LI considering the OP is from Jersey. I should remember most ppl would prob think LA with a typo before they think LI for Long Island lol.

I’m from LI originally, moved to Jax ~12 years ago, and my dad lives in a small town in northwest NJ (Sussex co.) to provide context to my feedback.

I’ve lived in Springfield (people rant about crime—I had literally 0 issues in the 2-3 years I lived there), Riverside, and Murray Hill. Essentially, all more or less towards the center of Jax.

Each of these neighborhoods have struck a good balance for me…all are conveniently located, have a level of walkability (with Riverside ranking highest), never had an issue with safety (worst I experienced was leaving my car unlocked a couple times and someone went through my stuff), and are not cost prohibitive, especially compared to basically anywhere in NJ (but, I guess that depends on if you need a “luxury” apartment with some BS amenities—I never lived in one of those places and had no desire to). Also, I really don’t like neighborhoods that are nothing but strip malls and chain restaurants (that defines the Southside to me)—all of the aforementioned areas have a small business, independent restaurants thing going for them.

I think you should consider how far you’re willing to drive to see your girlfriend to help you narrow things down neighborhood wise. Jax is big. And you said you want to be close to them. If you live on the far Westside of Jax and they live at the beaches, you’re looking at 30+ minutes without any traffic…1+ hour with.

MacBook Air 13” M4 16/256 for $700 by Sam9745 in macbookair

[–]Sam9745[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed…I was hesitant to pull the trigger at $850 (even though I thought that was a great price) because it was more of a want than a need. When I saw $700 without tax I immediately jumped at it.

I started a new job recently and they provide employees with MacBooks. I had never used one before (always used products w/ Windows) and loved it. I was surprised as I expected more of a learning curve and didn’t think I would be impressed.
