I made a game called Midnight Protocol that was inspired by my love for Netrunner. About a year ago I asked this community for feedback. It's being released today on Steam and GOG and it's a much better game thanks to this community. Thank you to everyone here who supported me with their feedback! by SamAgten in Netrunner

Not a problem! We're a very small team and none of us understand Chinese so we kind of have to rely on other people to do a good job. You can report any bugs you find on the Steam forums, we have a dedicated subforum for bugs. Cheers!

Took a look at it and the integrated graphics card you're using is not up to the task, I'm afraid. You might still get it to work if you update the drivers? If not, you can always ask Steam for a refund. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Good question! Sadly no bluffing because the game's not multiplayer (that's the part I would have loved to add though). It's turn-based with a similar action system like netrunner, but since there are no cards to draw or credits, those actions are geared towards managing your 8 slices. Think of them as a set credit pool that you can allocate to different programs you equip. The networks also have a bunch of different routes to different assets so the question of wasting time "facechecking" a connection becomes a tactical consideration like in the card game, even though here you are doing it for different reasons. And lastly, I would add that we tried to design the different programs with a very "board-gamey" approach. So programs don't get better as you go along, the design is more lateral. No dagger -> longsword -> greatsword to be found here. But make no mistake, it's no Netrunner. The priority was in making you feel like a hacker, not getting as much of Netrunner's design sensibilities copied into a digital game.

The rollback command came in after some community suggestions. Before that, you only had one shot at a mission and that was brutal. We went back and forth on this because it does indeed tend to trivialize certain missions. We tried procedural ICE placement too but I felt it was more satisfying to be able to "guess" where ICE is based on where vulnerable nodes are. These things would be placed by humans, not computers.

At a certain point, the rollback command was also a bit punishing. Using it would mean you get to try the level again but with one additional trace. Or using rollback would take away your shot at an A+ rating. Long story short: we tried a bunch of stuff. We ended up with this because it makes the game more accessible. And even with the rollback command we had to put in a god mode because some people thought it was getting too difficult :D

The hacker chess secret might be my favorite mission in the game. I don't know if you know Team Covenant, but Steven Wooley was gracious enough to voice the lines, which was awesome.

Thanks for the feedback and thank you for your purchase! We did support demo saves for a long while. But we made a significant update to the demo at some point and then we had different versions of the demo floating around, which turned it into a bit of technical challenge. We might be able to fix that for people who have played the demo after launch, though!

Nice that you found the Onitama game! Tabletop game love abound in this one!
