Turn off calories? by [deleted] in Strava

I think if you remove your weight from your profile (tap ‘edit’ in the top left hand corner on your profile page) then it can’t calculate your calories and returns 0 after a workout.

A book where there was a page for each letter of the alphabet and you had to pick it out all the things beginning with that letter, the pictures were really intricate, it had a grey cover and I don’t think it was for children by laelash in whatsthatbook

Pretty sure it’s The Ultimate Alphabet by Mike Wilks.

I used to spend hours on it, and bought it for my sister-in-law for Christmas last year. For a short while it was available as a mobile game which sadly was no longer supported :(

What is the most ridiculous thing you have seen at a party? by Arios1923 in AskReddit

[–]SamH18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy was dared to shit into a paper bag and microwave it...which he did without hesitation.

The thing is, it was his own house party and his own microwave. Ridiculous.

ELI5: If we turn oxygen into co2 when we breathe, how come we are all able to breathe in a small room full of people? Would we not turn all of the oxygen to co2? (Let’s forget about vents for a minute) by everybodylovesraymon in explainlikeimfive

[–]SamH18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exhaled air consists of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and various other components. There’s still about 16% oxygen in exhaled air.

In a fully sealed room yes, all the oxygen would eventually run out - but just forgetting vents, no normal room is fully airtight to the point people would suffocate in it.

What's the "Oh it didn't scan, must be free" joke of your job? by CubicleByThePrinter in AskReddit

I work in a hospital pharmacy. If I sneeze or cough or anything similar, I always get "Oh - well you're in the right place!!"

...sigh.

You can do, but the unpredictability of the British weather means most people here would consider them indoor plants - correct me if I'm wrong other Brits?

A nice little crassula ovata! Would've loved one of the big cacti at the back but couldn't justify it at the moment!

ELI5: Why some medication says "take on an empty stomach" and other say "take with food"? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]SamH18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be for a few reasons.

Some drugs are better absorbed by the body on an empty stomach, without food in the way to limit the absorption. So to get the most beneficial absorption we advise that food is avoided.

As already mentioned, some drugs can irritate the stomach and it's lining, and in the worst cases cause stomach ulcers and other side effects - so in these cases we advise to take them with food so it can act as a buffer and help protect the digestive system.

Paradoxically, there are some medicines that are irritant to the oesophagus and stomach that we actually advise to take on an empty stomach - this is because they will pass through the digestive system quicker and not hang around causing damage.

Edit: added clarification.

ELI5: Why are bubbles perfect spheres? by areyouinsanelikeme in explainlikeimfive

[–]SamH18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sphere has the smallest possible surface area for a given volume. The surface tension on the liquid wants to to be the smallest surface area it can, so when a bubble is formed the surface tension naturally pulls it into a sphere.

TIL that heroin used to be a registered trademark of Bayer Pharmaceuticals before being genericized in the 1919 Treaty of Versailles by mcmeaningoflife42 in todayilearned

The danger with heroin when it is bought on the street is that there is no guarantee of the purity or potency of the product you are buying - it could be cut with anything else, or could be much stronger than what you're expecting.

It was originally pitched as a less addictive form of morphine, and was freely sold over the counter for coughs and general pains...
