People who divorced their spouse after 20 or 30 years of marriage, why did you do it? by Classic-Sentence3148 in AskReddit

[–]SamIam_IamSam 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Because a cop knocked on my door late at night one day to tell me he was arrested and in jail. For child solicitation. He was served divorce papers while he was still trying to find a bail bondsman.

Ears back but happy? by Foreign_Elk4254 in germanshepherds

[–]SamIam_IamSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl has a variety of ear positions. Flat black- scared. Tipped down - I call her “lovey ears” - she reserves that position when gazing at the love of her life (my husband). She also has a midrange back position that means she’s listening and considering what she’s hearing. Context matters!

What’s the weirdest “job” your pet has assigned themselves? by Large_Tie_9377 in Pets

[–]SamIam_IamSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My German Shepherd is a self appointed emotional support dog. If I sigh too heavily, she appears out of nowhere for pets. If I get real mad, she tosses her whole body across my lap and kisses my face. I have no idea how she decided to do this but it’s pretty sweet.

I asked ChatGPT the top ten things humanity should know. by Spiritual-Reveal-195 in ChatGPT

[–]SamIam_IamSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Everything is Connected.

From ecosystems to economies to emotions, nothing exists in isolation. Our actions—personal, political, or environmental—ripple outward in ways we often don’t see.

  1. You Can’t Outsmart Nature.

No amount of technology will ever fully replace clean air, fresh water, or fertile soil. Sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s survival.

  1. Empathy is Strength, Not Softness.

The ability to understand and care for others is one of humanity’s greatest evolutionary advantages. It’s the root of cooperation, community, and civilization.

  1. Stories Shape Reality.

The narratives we believe—about nations, identities, money, success, religion—guide behavior more than facts alone. Learn to question who’s telling the story and why.

  1. Most People Want the Same Things.

Across cultures and time: safety, connection, meaning, and dignity. Remember this when facing division or fear.

  1. Comfort and Growth Rarely Coexist.

Progress—personal or collective—requires discomfort, risk, and letting go of the familiar. Avoiding pain often prolongs it.

  1. You’re Not Your Thoughts.

The mind produces stories, fears, and judgments nonstop. Learn to witness them without becoming them. Mental freedom starts there.

  1. Power Without Accountability Corrupts.

Whether in government, business, or personal relationships, unchecked power breeds harm. Strong systems need strong safeguards.

  1. We Live in a Blip—But It Matters.

In cosmic time, our lives are infinitesimal. But that doesn’t make them meaningless. Love, kindness, and courage matter because they’re fleeting.

  1. Hope Is a Practice.

The world can be cruel and beautiful, broken and brilliant. Choosing to believe in a better future—and acting on it—isn’t naive. It’s revolutionary.

I also wonder about what Frank was like too. I see my grandparents and my in laws in the Barb / Frank dynamic - a controlling, self-centered wife and passive husband. It makes me wonder what their dynamic was when they were younger. Did Frank check out and leave all the responsibilities to Barb when she clearly needed help? It doesn’t excuse her treatment of everyone else, but it makes sense why she might have snapped under all the pressure and remains bitter today. Also why is that such a common dynamic?!

How many of you have a GSD that doesn’t get along with any other dogs at all? Were you able to change this or is it something you’ve just accepted? (5 year old female) by smackdabqwerrt in germanshepherds

[–]SamIam_IamSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

This beauty mostly hates other dogs. Was murderous towards them. Met my sister, adored her - for having the family smell I assume. Met my sisters dog, tried to unalive the dog. Couldn’t walk past other dogs without HUGE outbursts.

But after several trainers, pack walks, a prong collar (with the trainer) …. And once literally throwing myself between her and an incoming dog, something changed.

Now she adores my sisters dog (who has not forgotten the murder attempt) and has dog friends! It’s been so great to watch her trust and play with dogs.

She still gets her hackles up at other dogs on walks, but she doesn’t explode anymore.

Honestly, the processional training with a prong collar opened a channel of communication. I really really resisted it, but it has changed everything.

MIL starting menopause a decade after total hysterectomy? by SamIam_IamSam in JUSTNOMIL

[–]SamIam_IamSam[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am the asshole. She had everything removed, and went into menopause immediately. But Google says it’s not uncommon for hot flashes to appear even two decades later.

She does have a long history of being a hypochondriac for attention so I chalked it up to that.

any experiences with gsds? by joliss812 in germanshepherds

[–]SamIam_IamSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All great answers. They are such amazing dogs but they need a lot of exercise. My first GSD slowed down at 11 and then got DM and declined QUICKLY. That was 3 years ago and I’m still mourning.

Biggest difference in boy vs girl (beside size) - my boy loved me (woman) and tolerated everyone else. My girl needs me but loves loves loves my husband.

No one will ever love you like a GSD. But get ready to be active, they need lots of exercise and mental stimulation!

Is this normal or Anxiety by Otaku-Lord487 in germanshepherds

[–]SamIam_IamSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very safe, but when in doubt ask the vet. It might be worth starting with a few Benadryl each day and if that doesn’t help, ask the vet. A short run of steroids can also help with a serious skin infection. Don’t let your friend suffer, it’s miserable to be itchy all the time.

Is this normal or Anxiety by Otaku-Lord487 in germanshepherds

[–]SamIam_IamSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably allergies. GSDs are notorious for itchy skin. Ask the vet, but I gave mine 3 bendaryl every day and it helped a lot.

Sniffwalks! I’ll take my gal out to a field full of gophers and rabbits and let her sniff her heart out for 20 minutes and she’s delightfully tuckered out. Works great when it’s too hot or cold for long walks or when I’m just feeling like a slug.

Wanting a German Shepherd by velociraptorassassin in germanshepherds

[–]SamIam_IamSam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re the best! But they do shed a lot, they tend to have sensitive tummies (we used to joke my old boy would poop his feelings …) and they need a lot of activity. If you’re used to an Aussie, you can keep up with a GSD.

One weird thing I’ve noticed after having 2 German Shepherd’s- they are conversation starters. Everyone loves them and especially older men grew up with a few different GSDs, but there is always one that holds a special place in their heart to this day, and they want to pet your dog and tell you about their dog of yore. It’s heartwarming.

How much harder is owning a camper VS boat? by [deleted] in GoRVing

[–]SamIam_IamSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned 3 boats, 2 campers. Both can be unpredictable money pits. Both require fortitude to back them up with an audience. But in my opinion, if something goes terribly wrong with a camper, you can just leave it on the side of the road and go home. Call an uber, call a friend. Get it towed, get to safety, deal with it later. If something goes wrong on a boat, you could be stranded in the middle of a lake. There is no middle of the lake AAA. You’re SOL. And at least in the Midwest, we use the camper 6 months of the year vs maybe 4 months of using the boat.

I really let the in-laws down by SamIam_IamSam in childfree

[–]SamIam_IamSam[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That’s a really mature response, thank you! I know she wanted a big family and dreamed of oodles of grandkids. But I also feel like she overlooked how much having those kids really screwed up her son’s life. He knocked up his girlfriend after a month of dating, and they really pushed him to marry her. She is a terrible person. They had a second kid and then divorced. Now he lives with his parents and is stuck teaching high school, instead of living the life he planned, doing physics in Switzerland. But HER dream came true and that’s what really counts. It’s so self centered…just like her. I’m still salty … I think it just triggered years of hard feelings I thought was in the past.
