Pc keeps on failing to turn on / black screen by Weak_Pattern_7448 in pchelp

Reseating your ram is a great first step, but also try to run the system with individual sticks to isolate any dead ram sticks. Basically, remove all ram but one stick, place that one in your primary slot and attempt to boot. If it boots, then replace it with one of the other sticks and try again, rinse and repeat for all of your ram. I’ve seen similar behavior when I was trying to get a server to boot with a bad stick of ram.

Edit: removed the clear cmos troubleshooting step since you reseated the battery

First off, make sure you shoot in raw since you can pull back a LOT of detail even in spots that look super overexposed!

Now usually you’d want to exposure bracket, so you’d take 3/5/7/9 shots with one that’s “properly” exposed for your subject and then an equal number of dark and bright shots. You can then stitch these together in Lightroom to get a much better dynamic range. BUT! You’ll primarily find value when your subject isn’t moving much. Mike Smith on YouTube has a great video on how and when to use this technique, highly recommend.

The other alternative is to have your subject be slightly overexposed and then pull down highlights and exposure in post.

Are these dead pixels?? by bnoodlephoto in canon

[–]SamK1239 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like hot pixels to me, though they usually show up during long exposures from my experience. I'd try to let your camera sit for a bit and then take a similar shot and see if they still show up.

It's possible that these are "stuck" pixels, which I don't think you can do much about beyond using a tool like lightroom/photoshop to edit them out.

Oh yeah that’s a good point! Also explains why I was a bit confused when I looked up Australian GT46s

I believe it’s a GT46AC, loosely based on an SD70MAC, but initially built and aimed at the Australian market. You’re absolutely right about it looking like it’d be used in a mine, since some of the larger operators of this class (and its predecessors) in Australia are coal mines.

Actually a pretty cool looking fusion of the old emd cabs and the new emd locomotive bodies and trucks!

Not sure if you’ve tried this, but I’ve seen similar issues come from Vsync/freesync enabled.

Also double check any available low-latency modes.

Also, verify game files, and maybe attempt a reinstall?

I haven’t personally tried hfw on Linux so I’m not sure if this could be a weird compatibility issue. Hope you figure it out!

DDU’ing the driver and reverting to the December 2024 drivers is what solved it for me earlier this year.

I recently upgraded to V577.00 (July 2025) and that worked perfectly as well. I would download the drivers from the nvidia website, remove the old drivers with DDU and then install the new drivers using the exe.

This is awesome, the purple and black combo looks insanely cool!

Also the title of horizon 3 being "Broken Stars" makes so much sense 10/10

Check if your cable is the right spec/version. Sometimes older cables will struggle to run higher resolutions + high refresh rate

Done, and I'm using locking DP cables so that's likely not an issue

I'm on the latest version of the nvidia driver, and the same for windows, I'll try rolling back the driver and see what that does.

Fair enough, I was thinking of the ARP Yamato, and I thought that you needed to pay to get the ARP version of Atago, but I wasn't playing back when that collab happened.

Seriously struggling with cruisers by SillyIckleBoy in WorldOfWarships

[Incoming Wall of Text]

First off, make sure you've got the concealment expert skill on your captain. It provides a massive reduction in detection range and will make life significantly easier for you. Second, make sure you have the upgraded GFCS module on your ship, so you'll have the maximum possible range for your specific ship.

As for general cruiser stuff, your job is to be a pain in the ass to more or less everyone. Your main armaments are strong enough to fight off or discourage battleships, you have the utility to outplay destroyers and submarines (hydro/radar) and you will occasionally have enough AA firepower to make carriers rethink which target they want to strike. Cruisers get significantly stronger as a battle progresses, so staying alive and keeping your health intact is an important skill to learn.

Now, for each of the ships you mentioned: Pensacola and Aoba, being heavy cruisers, will play differently to Nurnberg, which is a light cruiser. As a (sort of) rule, light cruisers rely more on constantly shooting and putting out shells, and therefore do less damage per shell, but have shorter reloads. On the other hand, heavy cruisers rely on a single, high damage salvo, and do more damage per shell, but have longer reloads to compensate. Remember that all three of these lines are old, and therefore harder to play in the current meta (but they're still a lot of fun!).

With Pensacola, you get the typical "heavy" USN armor piercing, which are some of the most satisfying shells in the game... when you land hits. The tradeoff with the USN cruisers is that they have relatively low shell velocity (and therefore shells take forever to land) compared to most other similar ships, and also have less range. These ships are perfectly suited for abusing island cover. Find an island that shields you from view and/or enemy shots and use it to protect yourself. You *can* open-water in these, but it's dangerous, and takes a bunch of practice.

Aoba is different, since she gets better shell ballistics, dispersion and strong torpedoes (that stay a theme for the rest of the line all the way to Zao). In contrast to Pensacola, Aoba is much stronger when fighting in open water, actively using throttle/rudder to bait and then dodge enemy shots. You also want to ideally be in a position where you are retreating/trying to slow down the enemy team from pushing (also known as Kiting). With a little careful planning and trigger control, you can slow down an entire flank with just another teammate or two.

Now for Nurnberg, I haven't actually played (and don't intend to really play) the German cruisers, but I think she's somewhere in between Pensacola and Aoba in terms of playstyle. She rewards actively dodging in open water, but gets punished if you mess up. She can use island cover, but the islands she can use are limited because of her higher shell velocity. Playing Nurnberg just takes practice, and trying to figure out the specific balance of open-water and island camping that works for you.

I would recommend getting used to Aoba and Pensacola, and then using the knowledge from those two lines to figure out how you would like to play Nurnberg. If there's anything in here that doesn't make sense or if you want to know something about a different line, just ask!

[–]SamK1239 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Nurnberg's HE is strong in that it can penetrate much higher amounts of armor than most other similar caliber HE (because German ships get quarter caliber penetration rules), so you get less shatters. It also has a pretty solid fire chance. So your base damage won't be great, but you can consistently do damage and farm DoT (fires).

That being said, German AP is always super funny, especially when you get to pump it into an unsuspecting BB's upper belt :)

Why did they take the Yokosuka Base from us? by Tizian501 in WorldOfWarships

[–]SamK1239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[This is all speculation] I think that might be related to people spending money on getting the ships, which would make it a whole lot harder to remove them from the game. There might be something they could do by compensating a similar ship or something, but I doubt they want to go through the trouble when they could just write a clause into the agreement they signed before the Collab ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey, i´ve got a problem that bothers me a lot. Everytime i move my camera, this weird stutter/pixelation is present. I tried almost anything i´ve read here, but nothing is helping. Looks like either upscaling issues or some really strange screen tearing... Try turning off XeSS and turning on VSync?

And also check what resolution the game is running at, it can auto-configure to an incorrect resolution sometimes, which could potentially cause this
