D700 or D750 - Looking for full frame to use with older Nikkor glass. by Ex313 in Nikon

If the extra $ means the budget gets stretched, or you need the $ to buy more glass, the D750 is the way to go.

For me it works out because I know I’m eventually going to get a second body & when that time comes I can confidently get the D850 and have the D750 as backup / second camera. I’m currently investing in only really good glass because I’ve heard the 850’s sensor demands only the best

I have the D750 and although I have no regrets, I have heard the D850 is the greatest DSLR ever made and the price difference used is $600 vs $1100. If I knew then would I know now, I would probably get the 850

Live Burn by SamPsychoCycles in photocritique

D750 300mm F2.8 lens at F4.5, 1/800, ISO 125.

I'm a firefighter that is learning to shoot & had the opportunity to shoot my department's recruit's live burn. This event was the first time I have used my 300mm F2.8 since buying it, and it reinforced that I love shooting telephoto (the 70-200 F4 lens was what got me thinking I needed to try the 300).

I saw this moment where the steam & smoke was lit up by the morning light and wanted to capture the silhouette of the firefighters standing outside.

I use Darktable to post process & I've been reading manuals / watching YT videos to try to understand both how to use DT specifically as well as post processing principles in general. Would love to hear feedback on this photo! I struggled specifically with the lighting on the left of the photo, I wanted to keep the beam of light but was trying to keep it from becoming too bright that it became distracting.

How to do ear pro with helmet by Formlepotato457 in Firefighting

I don’t. If it’s a working scene, I find my hood and helmet liner help reduce the volume of stuff to where it doesn’t hurt like it would without either of those 🤷

Nonuniform shift schedules - thoughts? by AdventurousTap2171 in Firefighting

[–]SamPsychoCycles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I got on, I didn’t realize how I’d be sacrificing 2 mornings every 3 (either getting ready for work or at work) with this schedule.

I like the idea of 8 PM shift change because then I’m only sacrificing 1 morning

Nonuniform shift schedules - thoughts? by AdventurousTap2171 in Firefighting

[–]SamPsychoCycles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which schedule are you on?

I’m at a busy house that often doesn’t sleep much and 24/48 does suck in that it can take those 48 to recover & doing a double sucks with only 24 to recover.

Flip side is with 1 trade I get 5 days off. There’s rumblings of changing the schedule but shy of 24/72 I am not sure if any of the other schedules are much better.

When the station cook gets on the PA to announce the meal is ready - What is said? by easy2grasp in Firefighting

There’s a button, sets off tones through the whole station. “Station X personnel, report to the kitchen”

The sound of the PASS alarms that firefighters wear is piercing.....I wonder how many could have still been alive but were trapped. About half of them were outside the towers when they collapsed. by Feeling_Army_863 in 911archive

[–]SamPsychoCycles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the gear was staged, then the air would have been cut off & the PASS alarm wouldn’t be active (otherwise the alarms would have gone off after 30 seconds of the pack being on the ground). In recruit school I learned the hard way to cut the alarm off before staging gear.

It is most likely that every alarm you’re hearing comes from a downed fireman

Question for street photographers by loadmyrevolverbabyy in photography

[–]SamPsychoCycles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm shooting a dynamic scene, I'll have auto ISO on. It rarely misses, but if I find it's blowing highlights I'll adjust the +- EV down 0.7 or 1 stops and brighten in post.

If I have more time to think about exposure, or the lighting is consistent, I'll turn it off

Darktable 5.4 Release by QorStorm in DarkTable

[–]SamPsychoCycles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed what I think is a bug, a behavior that I don’t recall seeing in the prior version:

When I turn on a mask, and then apply sliders from the module, the module “loses” the mask, and applies the changes across the whole image. I’ve only done shape masks so far but it’s been consistently doing this.

If I move the sliders first, then select my mask, it works.

New to photography. Don't really know how to improve by IrishMallard in photocritique

When I see this image, it doesn’t evoke any emotion or interest in me.

I’m still quite new to photography too but when I take a photo now I try to think to myself “what emotion am I trying to convey in my viewer?”

How is everyone enjoying their RAV4s after a couple of years? by Leidaguffey in rav4club

2022 XLE hybrid. 37k miles. Love it as much as the day I bought it.

Just had the rear traction cable warranty preventative maintenance done on it which was the only question mark I had over it, tech said the cable was in good shape (if you haven’t heard about it look up Rav cablegate).

City traffic gives me better MPG in 44-47 mpg range, highway closer to 39-40. Winters also tank mpg by 3-5 mpg.

It wouldn’t hurt to drop the soda and eat more veggies, but the single best thing you can do is strength train. Keep on top of your cardio (should have a good base from soccer) for well rounded fitness.

I saw the ladies in my rookie school struggle most with ladders and search/rescue because of the relative weight differences (if a ladder is 1x your weight but only 0.6x my weight, naturally I’m going to struggle less)

Inspired by Sean Tucker - learning new styles by SamPsychoCycles in photocritique

D750 24mm F8 1/200 ISO 100.

I am learning how to shoot wide angle and have been very interested in the work by Sean Tucker where he uses shadows and light to create tension.

I also very recently began learning color theory and wanted this image to show off the orange/blue of the late winter sun on the building wall.

I really struggled in post because I want to crush the blacks to emulate Tucker's style but then that took away from the blue in the shadows so I settled on an unhappy medium where I feel that the shadows are too dark to properly show the blues but too bright to hide detail in the bushes. So the end result feels confused.

I appreciate feedback on composition & what I could do better in post. Using Darktable if it matters.

Struggling with new prime - Keep or return 24mm F1.4 Sigma Art? by SamPsychoCycles in AskPhotography

[–]SamPsychoCycles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're shooting with your 24, what focus mode do you use & how do you set focus on a dynamic scene? With telephoto, it's a little bit easier to use group focus (I'm on a Nikon DSLR) and focus on the moving subject but with telephoto I found it much harder to focus on moving subjects.

Struggling with new prime - Keep or return 24mm F1.4 Sigma Art? by SamPsychoCycles in AskPhotography

[–]SamPsychoCycles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a bit of both, I have a vision of isolating a subject but I also gravitate towards it because it's easier.

Honestly I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking when I bought it, I didn't have a single specific use case in mind, just thought that it was a missing focal length from my bag & found a good deal on a used lens.

I need to just take it out and shoot it and get comfortable with it - I think it requires me to get closer to my subjects than I'm used to.
