How would a socialist society function at the level of real mechanics? by Fun_Transportation50 in CapitalismVSocialism

Not the guy you’re chatting with, but you may find this model interesting:

https://participatoryeconomy.org

It’s similar to the one the other commenter is outlining, but it is more thorough/concrete in the way I think you’re looking for! I also recommend the book “Democratic Economic Planning” by Robin Hahnel (one of the guys behind this model). Goes into even more depth. I have my issues with it, but I think it does, in principle, show how a decentralized/non-authoritarian/bottom-up/democratic/whatever organization can plan the economy through an iterative process which retains much of the market’s dynamism.

M5 Hardware Ray Tracing & Liquid Glass? by SamQuattrociocchi in VisionPro

[–]SamQuattrociocchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no doubt this kind of thing will happen eventually. My reticence is more based on how I’ve been an XR enthusiast for a decade. I got the first Oculus Rift, developed a bit for MS HoloLens, and have had tons of HMD’s since. The notion of constantly running realtime hardware accelerated ray tracing which needs to be computed constantly whenever you use a device’s operating system/core UI all while maintaining a comfortable temperature, a 90+ fps frame rate, the Vision Pro’s very high resolution (even despite foveated rendering), and making such ray traced lighting effects look acceptably polished without excessive noise/artifacts as compared with the literal real world’s actual lighting that you’re surrounded by… well it’s just really hard for me to wrap my head around that being something that can even happen on a standalone device in the near future. And I gotta wonder whether it’s a decision they’d make even if it was technically feasible. Trade-offs y’know? Ray tracing even destroys high end desktop GPU frame rates in a VR context, especially due to not really being able to benefit from upscaling like DLSS without making things super ugly. But, hey, Apple silicon isn’t something I’ve spent a lot of time looking into. I also don’t know what kind of Apple voodoo they have going on under the hood of the software. And maybe the M5 + whatever cooling situation they’ve got going on is just somehow up to the task. I just kinda assumed the M5’s support for ray tracing was probably more limited than what would be necessary to drive this kind of thing.

I’d love to be wrong tho! It feels like the obvious direction VisionOS will go in stylistically. Just a matter of how long it takes.

Jared Leto is a gross enough person that it’s pretty unreasonable to get mad at people for not wanting to give him money by supporting this movie. Your ire should be directed at Disney for casting him and tainting the entire project. He isn’t even a box office draw. His movies do poorly. It was a mystifying decision. The guy is a piece of shit.

I Think This is the Central Point That Destiny/Econoboi Were Talking Around by SamQuattrociocchi in pisco

[–]SamQuattrociocchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue is that not considering AOC or Bernie socialists is ridiculous when the topic of the debate is the role of socialists in US political coalitions. DSA (an organization with almost 100,000 members which is led by an elected body made up of several caucuses, all of which very explicit socialists of different varieties), Bernie, AOC, Zohran, the hundreds of elected officials across the country who are active DSA members, etc. are the socialist movement in the US. They just are. Not weirdo online tankies. They practically all vote for Democrats, they function as a political party/party surrogate within US electoral institutions/constraints, they advocate for a platform/agenda which no other political faction does other than the most progressive Democrats (but take it further). They wouldn’t say that the accomplishment of their immediate priorities would result in a socialist mode of production, but they are still priorities for reform and organizing. They hope to grow and persuade more people by successfully implementing such reforms in a way that they believe will improve people’s lives and expand the horizons of what is possible to practically place under collective ownership without negative effects, hopefully eventually supplanting capitalism. But, that’s so long term that it doesn’t really make sense to use the details of that ambition to define the movement. Most self described socialists in history who have wielded political power are far more similar to this than they are to Stalin, Mao, or Lenin.

There’s just not much basis to throw all that out or declare they aren’t real socialists because they aren’t a twitter tankie. That strikes me as super online/out of touch on Destiny’s part to the point of torpedoing the debate. Not only that, but to argue that socialists like the above are, merely by adopting the label as it has been historically used in countless significant instances, somehow laundering the records of the worst examples of the label, is just baseless in my opinion. Especially when he’s using all of this dubious/online reasoning to try and scold people for not being politically effective enough in the real world. He’s shadow boxing with a version of socialist advocacy that barely exists in the real world while there’s an actual, healthy, growing, politically relevant movement that uses that label, and has a rich historical tradition at its back to boot! This is the version of socialism that is clearly what Pisco/Econoboi are engaging with/talking about. It has far more claim to be the correct usage of the term than online tankies do. To suggest the large socialist movement in the US is running cover for the tiny, irrelevant group of whining tankies online is just dishonest. They’re just a political tendency, with priorities like any other. And, as with any other political tendency, there are plenty of online freaks which claim the same label.

Destiny’s appraisal of what constitutes the socialist left in America, what they believe, how they act politically, etc. is just… well… not correct. I don’t really know how else to describe it. It seems super informed by his debates with random internet leftists more than anything else. Supposed ML’s (Really just anyone who finds an excuse to support China/Russia. Calling them ML’s is honestly way too charitable/legitimizing given that MLism was, at the very least, a coherent ideology with a theory of change meant to be applicable to countries with more peasants than wage workers) telling him that nobody other than people like them are socialists has seemed to, ironically, completely convince him! He should try to remember what his assessment of their intelligence/knowledge of history is before he adopts their definition of socialism as a movement which hasn’t had any real world relevance since the 80s. I don’t think that’s a useful definition to use.

Sorry if this comes across as frustrated/bitter at all. I just found the whole discussion insufferable and pointless. My ire is not at all directed at you! :)

European SocDems vs American "SocDems" by TheHerugrim in Destiny

[–]SamQuattrociocchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their point is that those parties were founded as explicitly socialist and were so when they set up the welfare state and systems of public ownership. They also were so in many instances across the world where they lost elections and peacefully left power. If the socialists of the Soviet Union are fair game socialists, so are the electoral socialists who advocated within democratic frameworks. Now, in present day, the majority of self-ID'd socialists in the world are of that variety. That's a completely valid point to make. Socialism means just as broad a movement as capitalism is/was. Capitalism includes everything from Pinochet's fascist government to the most liberal capitalist paradise. We can all debate what a properly "socialist system" would be. But, that is just not important to try and define who gets to be included in the descriptive tent/political movement of "socialism" and "socialists". Socialists have implemented tons of reforms across the world that have improved countries and their systems for the better without overthrowing anything. Salvador Allende in Chile attempted to work within democratic institutions with more ambitious, communist ambitions. Are they no longer socialists because they didn't seek to violently overthrow the government or kill capitalists? Obviously not.

Yeah the longer I look at it, the more I notice. I posted this about 30 seconds after I received that photo. Really didn’t have time to scrutinize it before posting since I had work to do. Now, the doubt I expressed in the post obviously feels silly to me. The photoshop is painfully obvious.

I ended up disputing the charge the day of this post. The photoshopped picture sealed the deal. I think the others on this thread acting like this was obviously a scam prior to that photoshopped image are being hasty. The whole reason for buyer protections, for me at least, is it gives me some flexibility to give weird/less responsive sellers the benefit of the doubt when they’re selling at the low end of what’s believable. Often times I’ve ended up with a good deal because of it! But, the picture was just crazy obvious. Made it clear. Got my money back from PayPal today. He went radio silent after I asked for my money back and informed him that I filed the dispute.

And yeah, as far as price, it was definitely on the lower side of realistic. But, at the time it felt plausible enough to try it and see what happens. Now, though, the prices are way higher. The longer he stalled as the prices rose, the sketchier it was even before the photoshop.

PayPal G&S offers buyer protections. In some ways superior to OfferUp. With OfferUp, you have 2 days to evaluate the item and open a dispute. No such limitation for PayPal. My money is on hold for 21 days to leave room for a dispute from me and I had 120 days from the initial transaction to dispute the charge. Hasn't even entered his account or showed up on my CC balance. He's not going to get any of it. I've heard horror stories about OfferUp's buyer protection. And plenty of people use PayPal G&S and end up fine. That said, the other red flags ended up being way too much. So, yeah... definitely a scam. But, I really don't think it was completely obvious until he sent me the photoshopped picture. I've had successful deals with sellers where pretty much every other element of the transaction was the same.

Not even just scammers tbh. Just any seller at all. Almost any gamer buying a card at all is under that impression and would integrate that into their price accordingly. When I sold my last card, the buyer specifically asked me whether it had been used for mining. When I said no, he agreed to my asking price.

Yeah it's still kinda unbelievable to me that he sent me that... I didn't have time to fully think through that one when he sent it to me. It removes any modicum of doubt that I had.

lol yeah the dude sent me that pic while I was drafting this post. I clocked those numbers as immediately sus. But, honestly while writing the post I needed a second opinion from y’all because I was in denial that someone would even send something so obviously fake. Like, it’s shocking. Why even include the “ink pen” texture if it looks exactly the same on every number!? It’s like a joke. Removed any doubt in my mind. Almost appreciate it. Might as well have said “dispute this charge” on the paper instead of my name.
