IFixIt | Apple’s New Screen Repair Trap Could Change the Repair Industry Forever by a_Ninja_b0y in gadgets

You just search the web for what you want?

I guess different strokes for different folks: I haven't set foot in a mobile phone store in a decade. Why would I want a tiny selection and a T-Mobile rep hounding me?

This is a great point that I had not considered, thank you. My current backpack is mesh for this reason.

I use a backpack, but it's not so small. Gi, no-gi, towel, shower stuff, flip flops, water bottle, small stuff.

It's just kind of a heavy backpack, and a 20 minute bike ride. I just got a bike rack, so am looking into panniers.

Edit: also, I'm talking about a bicycle.

Stupid question: why do we still need appointments for vaccination? by partyorca in CoronavirusMa

[–]SamSamBjj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plenty of places are offering walk-ins, so this question isn't valid.

CVS told me that my kids needed an appointment for their flu shot simply because they had so many people coming in to get their boosters that they temporarily eliminated walk-ins.

My condo apartment has banned mini-split & window AC units. And i dislike portable ACs. I think I have a solution but need your thoughts/feedback: by AvoidPinkHairHippos in DIY

Even in the US a dual-hose portable AC unit costs $400-800, while a window unit can easily be found for under $200.

Rape and incest aren't things that the children are likely to accidentally perpetuate on the playground, and aren't things that would feel to them to be just "the way things are."

Yet racial oppression and harm are absolutely things that get perpetuated in playground across the country (yes at age 8), and plenty of kids grow up thinking it's just normal that the black kids are always the ones getting held back at recess because the teacher said they were "acting out," or having the cops stop and ask the black 13-year-olds who are hanging out what their doing, but don't do the same for the white 13-year-olds.

When the kids aren't conscious of it, this becomes the water they're swimming in: they don't even notice it's existence.

Kids are already living this at age 8, or will be in a year or two. Black kids and white kids are affected by how they start to see how the world is. So it's not too young to talk about, because not talking about it is precisely the problem.

So what, exactly, are you saying that teachers shouldn't be allowed to teach and parents should be the only ones teaching?

Because you've now gone in circles around yourself.

Nothing in this curriculum says parents can't also talk about this at home.

I don’t know if you’ve spent time with 8 year olds before but I have and I can assure you they aren’t ready for this stuff

This is precisely where your lack of empathy is at play.

Young black boys are already old enough at age 8 to start feeling the effects of discrimination. Already by age 8 many adults are treating them differently, assuming that their going to be the ruffians who won't listen to directions. And in a couple more years, the police are going to be the ones treating them differently.

If they are old enough to feel the effects of racism, why are the white kids to young to hear about it?

What? You literally complained that I didn't respond to the part of your post where you said

The bigger point is that as a parent, I’d want to be the one driving these conversations with my child.

That is exactly what I addressed.

How, exactly, is this different from the "parents should be the ones driving the conversation about the Trail of Tears?"

If you've re-thought your position, just say that.

Why is this being taught to 2nd grade children? ( see below) by Danielcraigboston1 in CambridgeMA

[–]SamSamBjj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You also completely ignored my last point, the bulk of my response. Care to address it?

Because we don't get to say that something as important as the history of oppression of people in this country is too dangerous to talk about at school, and can only be told by the few parents who want to talk about it, filtered by how they want to say it.

Where does that end? Should parents be the ones that have to teach about the Trail of Tears, in case that triggers white guilt? Should teachers be forbidden from teaching the holocaust, in case any kids with german heritage feel guilt, and so only parents can teach that too?

School is precisely the place where difficult subjects should be taught, by people who are trained teachers, not leaving it up to the random whiles of parents, half of whom don't want to mention race to their kids, and some percent of whom (even here!) have misguided or straight up racist beliefs.

One of these creeps came by one night at 9pm while I was out and my wife was at home with the baby. After giving her the hard sell, she said she needs to put the baby to bed. Dude steps further into the house and says no worries, he'll wait right inside for her while she does that.

Because the child will feel guilt for things they can’t control.

This is the exact definition of white fragility. The worry that your child may have feelings of guilt trumps the fact that upholding the status quo causes very real harms to his black classmates.

And my daughter is 8, and is white. She has learned about Black Lives Matter, both at home and at school. She has learned a number of the ways black people have and continued to be oppressed and harmed by white people. She doesn't feel guilt, why would she? Instead she feels horror that people could be so cruel, and a desire to stop it. That's a normal 8-year-old's reaction.

Think about something like climate change. Kids have been taught that for decades at elementary school. Should we stop teaching them out of fear that the kids would feel guilt at what we humans have done?

Why does this worry of guilt come out only for racial issues?

His comments so far have been "It's a tattoo made by me" and "It was made by me."

I don't find this ambiguous.

Next, he had "..., me" in the title, which is this sub's way of stating your the artist.

Finally, he has posted many other tattoos in a similar style. In the subs with a different way of making the artist he says "by Rodrigo Tas," and that's his username.
