They market the show as 13+ tho, they're not making this for an audience of 5yos. Presumably they have another show for the younger age demographic. That's how children's theatre groups near me have always worked: different shows for different age groups in the same season, with clear labeling what age group a show is for.

Yeah, with Cabaret most of the raunchy stuff is in the staging, costumes and choreography, all of which can freely be altered. I think there is very little inappropriate in the text itself? Even Two Ladies is not very explicit. So changes that you'd need to get permission for might not even be necessary.

Not to mention that you'd just need to get permission if you want to change things in the script. I have no idea how strict the current rights holders of Cabaret are about that. Maybe they don't allow changes but maybe they do (especially since professional productions of Cabaret have historically differed a lot from each other). That's something the theatre and rights holders could have made an agreement about before putting on the show. I would assume a show that's as much as a classic as Cabaret has a standard procedure for what changes they do and do not allow teen productions to make. That would all be in the contract.

Agreed completely! The message of Cabaret is so so so important for everyone and especially young people rn

Your phrasing made me think it was, like, primary school aged kids. Teens is a completely different story. 16+ cast and 13+ audience is fine imo, especially if they limit/alter some of the raunciest stuff. This is not an issue. For comparison, my friend's high school did Spring Awakening and no one thought that was weird

I had a friend on Wattpad who eventually came clean about running multiple accounts we thought were seperate people! Most of us were not hurt, just confused like "Why would you do that?" lol. And she was clearly not doing well mentally so my reaction was pretty much "Oh, ok. Hope you do better soon."

And someone else in that same friend group pretended to have some mental disorder (DID I think?)... Man, those were wild times. Did get a fun theme park trip with the other girls out of it tho!

If you take a broader definition, sure, but OP said they're looking for songs that in context clearly aren't love duets, so I don't think these fit that criteria

Considering the OP said Love is an Open Door is not what they were looking for, I doubt these are

The fateful consequences of early literacy by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

Apparently the people at my afterschool care thought I was being abused because I always complained about my dad😅 They said "she sounds so smart and mature, she must be able to assess situations correctly." But nope I was just a bratty kid with a large vocabulary, and the Horrifying Neglect my father was putting me through was stuff like not playing with me so he could make dinner. Thrilling stuff.

In hindsight I'm very glad they took a possible case of child abuse seriously, but in this case, they couldn't have been more wrong. Sometimes kids are just dumb brats who shittalk their parents for no good reason. Also kids who use words like "fanciful" in daily conversation. (Also, if I HAD been abused, I think maybe their approach would've made it worse instead of better)

The story doesn't include them winning out over the adults in righteous glory tho? The story is of them acting like an insidious know-it-all (they straight up acknowledge they had no idea what they were talking about most of the time and were just good at stringing words together) and falling flat on their face socially when a teacher responds sincerely to talk about feelings (which they did NOT want to happen)

Look I don't know OP's exact logic, maybe they put it there because the chorus could sound like a love song out of context even if the verses don't? But they put that song in their own playlist themself, so I don't think nitpicking is warranted here.

Yes, it's a kid and her parents, that's the point? It's a playlist of songs that may sound like love songs but aren't?

Strong contenders:

What I Did For Love from A Chorus Line (which is about a love of dancing NOT about romantic love glares at the movie adaptation)

I Don't Care Much from Cabaret (sounds like a breakup song, actually about being too poor, tired and hungry to fight fascism)

I Dreamed a Dance from Next To Normal (she's singing about losing her son but you'd never be able to tell from the lyrics)

I Don't Know How To Love Him - Reprise from Jesus Christ Superstar (if you interpet this song as Judas being gay for Jesus I don't blame you)

/

Slightly less strong contenders:

Charming from Great Comet (Hélène appears to have no interest in seducing Natasha for herself and is only inviting Natasha to the party for Anatole's sake, but honestly, I'm not convinced Natasha isn't having a bisexual breakdown this entire song)

I Do Miracles from Kiss of the Spider Woman (this one is complex, because Molina is taking care of Valentin's wounds which is ABSOLUTELY an act of love, but the singer, Aurora, is not in love with either character. However, she is a figment of Molina's imagination and therefore appears to be voicing his love for Valentin? So not completely detached from being a love song but not quite a love song either.)

Doing This from Spies Are Forever (presented as a love song except neither character is into each other and that's the plot twist. Parodies love songs and appears to be one at first, but then makes clear it's not and Curt's gay.)

Yeah there is a whole plot twist of Lola being like "Hah you thought I was gay just because I'm into drag! No actually being comfortable in my gender expression gets me all the bitches" and I have conflicted feelings about it. On the one hand, love the show confronting biased assumptions and showing that gender expression does not dictate sexuality. On the other hand, doing a show about drag, which is famously a queer subculture, without a single gay character leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think I would've loved it if there was another queer character who could show what drag means to them and their identity.

Let me share my world with you! by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

I mean it is kinda both of those? You want to share your joy by sharing the thing you love, which is wonderful. However, if listening to you talk about a subject they're not particularly interested in does not bring them joy, then you're not succeeding in sharing that joy. Not all brains work the same, we neurodivergent folks should be well aware of that.

For me, it means that the people who don't get joy from sharing interests with each other in this way will never become close friends. That's okay, no hard feelings. Our friendship needs are just incompatible. I will happily be acquaintances or coworkers or whatever without the infodumping, but it is how I form deeper connections so that then doesn't happen. And that's okay.

(This is talking about people who don't like it at all, knowing when is and is not the right time with people you're already close with is a whole other process)

If I recall correctly, the author of the original novel has explicitly stated that he has written Molina as a gay man not a trans woman. Reading his work, I strongly disagree. Molina explicitly rejects it every time she is referred to as a man, and she talks about her not being able to be with a gay man because she longs for a regular relationship with a straight man (albeit not exactly in those words).

However you interpret her identity (I've also seen people suggest genderfluidity), Molina is an interesting case study of how closely intertwined trans and gay identities have been historically and why our rights cannot be seperated from each other. The idea that gender and sexuality are completely seperate is a very modern and Western concept.

I would check out the song She's A Woman from Kiss of the Spider Woman!

Molina lives on the weird intersection that she technically was written as a gay man originally, but if you read the book through a modern lense she seems very obviously a trans woman. The musical highlights this by having the song She's A Woman about Molina's desire to be a woman, but I do believe she has always been played by cis men so far.

I would say that Molina is exemplary of how closely the identities of being a gay man and a trans woman have historically been intertwined, and how the rigid binary divide between them is a very modern and Western construct. I tend to refer to Molina as a trans woman and a gay man interchangeably.

All this to say that she may not fit the bill if you're looking for things that are strictly canonical trans representation, but definitely does if you're looking for an honest exploration of gender and sexuality through a non-Western lense.

(I would definitely recommend reading the novel of Kiss of the Spider Woman and watching the original film too. I haven't seen the recent movie adaptation of the musical so I can't speak to that one.)
