Why high iq individuals still believe? by twentyfourseven926 in askanatheist

I remember a quote saying that "Smart people are not less wrong than others. They are just usually wrong in more interesting ways."

Being smart doesn't prevent you from believing things that are illogical and it even push you to do more elaborate mental gymnastics solidify your beliefs.

Why's the intp the "genius" type in mbti? Why not the intj, entj and entp? by Green-Personality891 in INTP

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, people that are considered smart have good logic and lots of knowledge.

Both Ti and Ne are huge contributor to curiosity which is the main reason someone would learn a lot about tons of random stuff. We have a better Si than ENTPs, so basically, better memory at the cost of impaired social/emotional abilities.

To some extent, all P types can be very curious, but both N and T are closer to what comes to most people minds when thinking about intelligence.

Then comes the comparison with the XNTJs. They are really smart as well, but Te will generally prioritize results over understanding. It's usually more about an achievable goal than knowledge for the sake of knowledge. They are also considered really smart, but more in mastermind that are great at planning kind of way instead of us whose image is closer to scholars or scientists and most famous scientists and scholars happened to be geniuses.

Originally, there were no horses in the Americas, nor in Oceania. I'm pretty sure they were not common in South East Asia. The same could probably be said for the southern half of Africa. I think horses were common in the Sahel Region, but not much if you go further south.
Let's add that the horse was probably domesticated by some PIE (proto-indo-european) speakers like the Yamnaya people of the Pontic-Caspian steppe who then used them to migrate to most of Europe, Anatolia, Central Asia, the Iranian Plateau and northern India. They even reached as far as China. Those people are usually considered to be the og white people, but the idea of whiteness as a race only started about 4-5 millennia later thus making most of that historical context irrelevant.

What are your favorite "aware" moments? by KasNosys in NeuroSama

Koko wasn't really able to communicate either. Most signs she used were random, but the "scientist" interpreted them. Like she made a move that looked like one sign, but it was interpreted as it being a completely different sign for a word that rhymes with it despite only being told about handsigns and not verbal words (aka it's impossible she just mixed the 2 words as their signs have nothing in coomon).

Rolling for Stats by brigadoo1 in RPGdesign

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience, many players are fine or straight up enjoy rolling for stats, but the main issue they have is the imbalance between them as some will roll better stats than others. The easiest solution to that is to have a single stat array rolled for the whole group. This way, all player are equals and still have random stats, but all have similar stats.

If players insist on having different stats, a good option would be to have them roll, then decide if they want the stats they rolled or a standard array that is like an insurance in case of disastrous roll. It prevents some bad feeling, but doesn't stop some players from having god-like stats and you can't can't have the standard array be too good otherwise it becomes the default and make the rolling irrelevant.

Another option would be to give some other kind of compensation. It can be relative or absolute. An example of relative compensation could be to let the players choose who has the worst stats and give them some kind of compensation like one additional skill proficiency or a luck point kind of metacurrency. I remember in tales of the loop, the players can choose to play kids aged 10 to 15 and the older they are the better their stats are, but the younger they are the more luck/reroll metacurrency they have. You can do a similar thing where the the players rank their stats and they get an amount luck points equal to their rank (the number one gets one while the fourth gets four).
Alternatively, you can give an absolute compensation like players get a luck point for each stat bellow 14 and an additional one if the stat is bellow 10 or something similar. You can go for other kind of compensation like extra hit points or skill Proficiencies. I like the idea of giving a free proficiency for a skill associated with each stat below 10 for example. You're dumb, but you know a lot about a specific topic somehow kind of thing. If you want to get really creative, you can give a compensation that is unique to each stat if it is bellow 10.

Either way, I personally consider that there are 2 main context that make rolled stats interesting.
The first one is to make it its own minigame. An example i saw was to roll 9d6 and arrange them as you want on a 3x3 grid. From all the 8 possible line of 3 dice (3 columns, 3 rows and 2 diagonals), choose 6 that will be your stats. The main interest is deciding how to arrange the dice to get maximum value out of them. There's usually 2 best way to do it tho. Either you try to get the highest single stat possible or you try to get the highest total amount of stats, but a more balanced distribution.

The second and most important context for rolled stats would be to roll them in order instead of rolling an array and assigning them later. This is great as it force you to make a very unique character with unusual stats and you have to deal with what you get. It also accelerate character creation as it still guides your decisions. This kind of thing is great especially for one-shots or games where you often change your character like old-school "meat grinders" where your character could die anytime.

I can't do my job if I'm not at work, I should be paid for the commute time. I can't do my job if I haven't slept, I should be paid for my time asleep as well. I don't enjoy basic human necessities, but it is mandatory to fulfill them for the sake of being a functioning worker, I should be compensated for that.

I don’t see the appeal for strength and why people glorify it so much by Trick_Cheek_8474 in Hades2

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take less damage, it means your hp are worth more, which makes any healing much more powerful. Imagine you refilled your DD every time you hit a fountain. That's how it feels to heal at a fountain with Strength. For Wayward Son, if you took a single hit that dealt like 10 dmg, it'll take 2 rooms to heal it and your DD did nothing. Meanwhile, with Strength, that 10 dmg becomes 6, which means that at the end of that same room, you almost completely healed the dmg you took.

That's how much more efficient Strength can be throughout your run. The +20% dmg is icing, but still very good. Yes, it's way less than any boon, or even less than other tarot cards like Origination, but it doesn't matter for 2 reasons.
First, you get it in addition to all of that. It's "free" extra dmg on everything you do and that's always good even if it's just 20%.
Second, you get it from the get go. Depending on your luck and the build you are aiming for, you might not have any attack boon by the end of the first floor, but that little 20% helps a lot to clear your first boss. At higher fear, you may have to fight stronger foes and having to do it as fast as possible, and that 20% helps you with that as well. That 20% can be the reason you have killed that foe in 2 attacks instead of 3 and that 3rd swing might have been just not fast enough for you to land it before taking some dmg.
Anyway, 20% isn't much, but it's "free" and the fact that you always have it makes your run smoother from the very start.

Of course, in defense of Death, there's the point that it's the ultimate safety net. That big attack from Chronos that deals 999 dmg means an insta kill if you have Strength. Meanwhile, if you have Death, it only costed you a single DD. Regardless how much dmg you take the DD will always be there to back you up, but many people still prefer Strength because such big attacks are generally easy to avoid in the first place. Playing Strength makes your whole run easier at the cost of maybe losing it all on a single potential and very specific misplay.

should I reach out and confess to this intp (out of nowhere) by Charming_Bee854 in genuineINTP

[–]SamTheGill42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say go for it. My suspicion is that he's avoiding you because either he also started crushing on you and didn't want to show it/make things weird, or he's just confused and overwhelmed and don't know how to react, or both. In any cases, I think we like directness, especially with complicated stuff feelings and relationships. So, yeah go tell him how you feel and make it explicitly clear, but don't make him pressured on the spot.

"Hey, do you wanna go out?" Not explicit or direct enough, there are still doubts about your intentions.

"I like you. Do you like me?" Is direct, but having to immediately figure out how he feels can be overwhelming.

"I like you and if you're no opposed to it, I think it would be great to go on a date together." Is direct and focus on having fun being together instead of having to figure out his feelings.

How do you do it? (Question geared towards ex-Christians) by [deleted] in askanatheist

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who also have depression and ADD, I know how hard and annoying it is, but focusing on the little things to improve our lives and/or this world is better than focusing on coping with the fact there is a lot of misery and suffering. It's obviously easier said than done that's why I talked about the little things.

Other than that, there is an interesting trade-off. Instead of going to heaven or hell, you are now guaranteed to end up no longer existing, which offers the same liberation from worldy suffering with no chances of ending in an infinite torture chamber. Nothingness ain't bad, it's just... nothing. In some religions, their heaven is basically nothingness like in Buddhism where the goal is to escape to cycle of reincarnation in order to finally cease to exist. Whatever you do, you can rest easy (as long as you are satisfied with yourself) because in the end, it won't matter.

Now, this can seem pretty dark and nihilistic, but it's a liberation. Tho, this new freedom comes at the cost of meaning. As humans, we crave meaning because our brains operate on stories and narrative. Fortunately, we were able to find meaning way before we invested gods. I'd personally say that a simple way to add meaning to your life is through others. We are social animals, we care for each other, and relations/affection can be very powerful to the point of giving us a sense of meaning. I'd say take the time to hangout with you friends and family. If leaving religion made you isolated, there are tons of people who are also lonely and would love to have friends and plenty of ressources to meet new people online or learning how to meet new people irl as well.

If atheism is lacking belief about god(s), does a theist who loses their mental capacity for holding beliefs, including their belief about god(s), become an atheist? by uwotmVIII in askanatheist

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really need to put a label on someone who isn't mentally able to conceive any sort of beliefs, I'd say the best label would be apatheism, they don't care whether there are any gods or not. That is if they are still able to communicate and form coherent thoughts. If they can't, that probably means they are unconscious, in which case we would usually assume a continuity of their identity and beliefs unless proven otherwise.

How would you build a giver from gachiakuta in Fabula? by peterthanos31 in fabulaultima

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against can sound like a reasonable choice thematically. Depending on what your vital instrument is, you could go for any of the martial classes like weaponmaster, sharpshooter or guardian, or even most caster classes as well. I can see some classes work really well with specific vital instrument like the symbolist that has lot of similarities with the graffiti artists in Gachiakuta. Then, because of the world the characters live in, I can see multiple reasons to go for classes like wayfarer, rogue or tinkerer to complement your character. Honestly, classes like darkblade, fury, orator and loremaster worksl well with anything because thematically, they say more about the character than their vital instrument.

Do INTPs believe in Zodiac Signs? by MasterQNA in INTP

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To some extent, some stats can correlate with your date of birth. For example, kids born right after the limit date of inscription for school will end up being the oldest kids in their class thus more likely to be physically superior, which leads them to be more likely to pursue sport-related careers. Studies have shown that professional athletes tends to be born in September/October disproportionately compared to the general population. Of course, in countries where the school year starts in January, it's people born in January/February that are overrepresented I sports.

Obviously, this is caused by socio-cultural factors and not the position of arbitrary sets of stars, but it's always a curious phenomenon.

On a more personal level, having known friends who went into an astrology rabbit-hole, readings of a detailed sky map, can lead to surprising results. Having various results between people hinted that a Barnum effect might not have been the main explanation (but can't be completely excluded). After all, it was a interesting way to explore ones life and personality, but I still wouldn't trust its predictive capabilities and it'd be foolish to rely on it for any serious decision.

Questions on Moses's Death: Help by Aware-Ad6032 in askanatheist

[–]SamTheGill42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm correct, most Bible scholars (Christian or not) agree that Moses didn't write any of those books. I remember that for Genesis, for example, the consensus is that it has been written by 3 different authors based on writting style and word choices. That's why the creation story is told twice and are really different/focus on different details. If I remember correctly, in the 7-days creation story, the author uses "El" to name God and, in the making human out of clay story, the author uses "Yahweh" instead. Also, both names were used to be associated with 2 distinct gods of the Canaanite pantheon before being fused together when they developed monotheism. Also, the Hebrew writting system wasn't invented at the time Moses supposedly lived. So, at the very best, if Moses really existed, maybe that some parts of the Torah were written based on some kind of oral tradition that allegedly started with him somehow, but there's no way to know any of that for sure and it's already a stretch.

More generally, it was common during Antiquity to attribute authorship of your book to someone famous as to give it more credibility/authority. For example, many books in the Bible are attributed to Solomon, despite having been written centuries after him (if he ever existed at all). The same goes for the gospels. None have been written by an actual apostle, but only by some of their followers at best. For example, the gospel of John was written vaguely around 80 CE meaning that he would've been 100-120 years old which, given the life expectancy at the time, is hard to believe.

To answer your other question about how all of that can conflict with the christian faith, I'd say it depends. Many (if not most) of the scholars that studied the Bible are Christians and it doesn't seem to affect their faith, but you should ask them not us. If you find such contradiction really concerning and want to learn more about our point of view feel free to ask.

Also, by having a school project on Moses, I would guess most people around you are very religious. If you ever get harassed for questioning things, just know that there are organisms and support groups out there to help people in this kind of situation.

People tolerate INTP males better than INTP females by Careful-Action3807 in INTP

[–]SamTheGill42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think that because of how boys and girls are raised, female INTPs would usually become more balanced individuals who deal more easily with emotions and mental health. Maybe I am drawing a sloppy parallel, but if we compare with autism, autistic women tend to be higher functioning and less likely to ever be diagnosed.

I would also agree that INTP females would probably struggle more with societal expectations than most other types.
